  • The objective of this project is to construct the intelligent underground facility management system based on UFSN (Underground Facility Sensor Network). Total project duration is 6-year. And first two years' project has been finished. First two years' project focused on water supply and sewage facilities among 7 underground facilities and investigated the fundamental construction technology for the underground facilities management system. To contribute the development of systematic and scientific management of underground facilities, KRIHS implemented 3 researches for 'Underground facilities management system for an intelligent city' like followings: (1) to investigate an integration plan for current water supply and sewage management systems, (2) to derivate of water supply and sewage monitoring items for the monitoring technology development, and (3) to implement a basic research for sensor installation plans on different types of current and new underground facility systems. This research paper contains the first two years' outcome of researches from KRIHS (Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements).

  • Nowadays, the construction of new ground structures, which can influence the stability of existing underground structures, is increasing. Consequently, many technical problems occur during the design and construction stage of the new structures. In constructing a neighboring structure, reasonable design and construction is strongly required to balance between the stability of the existing underground structures and the economy of construction of the new structure in terms of the importance of the existing underground structures. Many researches have been performed to estimate the safe region and behavior of underground structures. Constructing a new ground structure above the existing underground structure, external loads are to be applied to the existing underground structure. In this study, therefore, the stability and safe region of the existing underground structure was re-established with respect to the relative location of the new ground structure with the underground structure, the depth from surface to top of the underground structures, and ground conditions.

  • As the centralization of city, underground facilities is increasing and being more important. Although the importance of underground facilities map has been emphasized, there were many accidents related underground facilities. The inaccuracy of existing data and the carelessness of management caused many accidents. It is very important to update and to have high quality accuracy of underground facilities maps. But the underground facilities maps are mapped and updated by each institutes. So it is difficult to verify the accuracy of the data. In this study, Field Test is performed to analyze the horizontal accuracy of existing maps using Electromegnetic Induction Method, Total Station and GPS. Surveying of underground facilities in Seoul was performed for 6 institutes of underground facilities during 3 years. The aim of this study is to verify the horizontal accuracy of data and to improve the accuracy of underground facility maps. As the result of analysis, the horizontal accuracy of 6 underground facilities management institutes is 73 cm(2004), 78 cm(2005) and 75 cm(2006).

  • Underground facilities were constructed as needed by various management organizations, the result of which was the disordered and scattered underground spaces. This phenomenon can be viewed as the main cause of safety accidents in the underground space. To solve this problem, research on systematic construction and management of underground facilities should be conducted. Therefore, to improve the accuracy and the quality of information and to facilitate the systematic construction and management of underground facility information, this study aims to establish a 3D data model that conforms to international spatial information standards for pipeline underground facilities and to implement the data model to enable visualization. The result of this study can be used to improve the consistency of information not only between underground facilities, but also the correspondence between above ground and underground facilities. As such, this study has academic significance in that it presents an integrated data model that includes various objects in the ground and underground spaces and enables interoperability between diverse domain data.

  • Recently, issues regarding underground safety such as sink hole, ground subsidence and damage to old underground facilities have been increasing in urban areas, raising the need for more accurate management of underground facilities. Thus, this study derived a technique for comparing spatial data of underground facilities acquired from GPR exploration results acquired at the site with spatial data of integrated underground spatial maps. Using this underground space integrated map-linked service prototype program developed through this study, comparing the location information of the GPR exploration results and the underground space integrated map for the verification of site usability in some sections around Gangnam Station, the results demonstrated that the location of the map is 0.879m maximum, minimum of 0.101m and the average fudge factor was 0.625m. If accuracy of the GPR exploration results is guaranteed, it is judged that it can be used to improve the location accuracy of the underground space integration map.

  • Facilities located in the underground space are closely related to the sanitation and safety of the city, and the underground spatial information is precisely constructed and used as important information for facility maintenance, safety, and underground space development. In this study, a method was studied to increase the field usability by increasing the reliability of underground spatial information constructed in Korea and used in the field. For this study, the current status of the construction of underground spatial information in Korea was summarized, and cases of the underground spatial information quality grading system applied in the US, UK, Canada, France, and Australia, which are advanced geospatial information countries, were investigated. In terms of field usability, a questionnaire was conducted on the systems, standards, and management methods related to underground spatial information of field experts and consumers working in related fields in Korea, and statistical analysis was conducted to analyze the relevance of the introduction. Through this study, it was concluded that it is necessary to introduce a quality grading system according to the construction method of underground spatial information, accuracy and reliability, and to improve related systems and regulations.

  • Even though structural performance evaluation techniques for reinforced concrete structures have been improved, there are still many problems in the evaluation of structural performance for underground structures which interacts with surrounding soils. Since experimental evaluation of underground RC structures considering the interaction with the surrounding soil medium is quite difficult to be simulated, the evaluation for underground RC structures using an analytical method can be applied very usefully, For underground structures interacted with surrounding soils, it is important to consider path-dependent RC constitutive model, soil constitutive model, and interface model between structure and soil, simultaneously. In this paper, an elastoplastic interface model which consider thickness was proposed and importance of interface model is discussed. The effects of stiffness of structures to entire underground RC system are investigated through numerical experiment for underground RC structure for different reinforcement ratios and thickness of interfaces.

  • To realize the above concepts of underground space, several underground facilities are concentrated upon and around subway stations in harmony with underground pedestrian walkways. As a result, the reduction of transit time and pedestrian distance make it easy to get to an object. In this study, underground space is considered not just as pedestrian walkways, but as space for various activities and as a positive element in connection with its circumstances. The purpose of the study is to understand underground space's elements and develop more aesthetic and efficient design of the space to give mental composure and familiarity to users. The development of underground connection space is one of the methods to improve the quality of the whole downtown area. This paper studied the general characteristics of connection space and space improvements after spot inspections and suggested several aspects useful for substantial design as essential data for development of underground connection space.

  • This study aims to propose design directions for the eco-friendly, sustainable underground campus in terms of integrated design. For this purpose, theoretical investigation, design methodology and quality investigation, analytical case studies on the domestic and foreign underground campus, and user survey for POE(Post Occupancy Evaluation) and analysis on the recently built domestic underground campus plans were conducted. As a conclusion, design direction and improvement areas for the synthesized sustainable underground campus plan were proposed. Underground campus plan will be a great alternative for a 21st century sustainable campus if well-developed plans with organized design guidelines are established.
