  • The effects of methyl isobutyl ketone(MIBK)/ethanol(EtOH) solvent mixtures on the dispension, particle size distribution and rheology of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ nonaqueous suspensions were investigated by measuring sedimentation density and viscosity. The sedimentation density of $Al_2$O$_3$ and ZrO$_2$ particles increased in MIBK-rich($\geq$60 vol%) solvents with 'Hypermer' KD-1 as a dispersant. The ball-milled suspensions in 80MIBK/20EtOH(vol%) solvent exhibited the narrow and unimodal particle size distribution. Although all Suspensions exhibited the Pseduo-Plastic flow(Shear thinning) the shear thinning behavior was somewhat different depending on the mixture ratio of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ and MIBK/EtOH. Under a given shear rate( <300 s$^{-1}$ for $Al_2$O$_3$; <3000 s$^{-1}$ for ZrO$_2$) the strongest shear thinning appeared in the $Al_2$O$_3$ and ZrO$_2$ suspensions with pure MIBK solvent. The shear thinning was nearly independable on the mixture ratio of $Al_2$O$_3$/ZrO$_2$ in case of using the identical solvent(80MIBK/20EtOH, vol%).

  • An attempt was made to investigate the effects of additives (3%) such as egg white, soybean protein, corn starch and Read Amity-N (green bean starch 85%+psyllium husk 10%) on the thermal properties and gel structures of mackerel surimi and to examine the quality of surimi by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal transition temperatures of mackerel surimi protein were 40, 52, 67 and $79^{\circ}C$ after those temperatures were changed to 37, 46, 57 and $76^{\circ}C$ after adding salt (3% NaCl). Addition of Read Amity-N and corn starch to surimi showed new peak at the temperature of $90^{\circ}C\;and\;92^{\circ}C$, respectively. The enhancing effects of gel strengths of mackerel surimi cooked gels prepared from adding four kinds of additives, respectively, were egg white > soybean protein > Read Amity-N > corn starch in order. Scanning electron microscopy showed a difference in fine structures between the cooked gels which were prepared with and without additives. Dispersion profiles of protein were more thick in cooked gel prepared with additive than in cooked gel prepared without additive.

  • Bubble size in froth flotation has long been recognized as a key factor which affects the bubble residence time, the bubble surface area flux (Sb) and the carrying rate (Cr). This paper presents method of bubble size measurement, relationship between operating variables and gas dispersion properties in flotation column. Using high speed camera and image analysis system, bubble size has been directly measured as a function of operating parameters (e.g., superficial gas rate (Jg), superficial wash water rate (Jw), frother concentration) in flotation column. Relationship compared to measured and estimated bubble size was obtained within error ranges of ±15~20% and mean bubble size was 0.718mm. From this system the empirical relationship to control the bubble size and distribution has been developed under operating conditions such as Jg of 0.65~1.3cm/s, Jw of 0.13~0.52cm/s and frother concentration of 60~200ppm. Surface tension and bubble size decreased as frother concentration increased. It seemed that critical coalescence concentration (CCC) of bubbles was 200ppm so that surface tension was the lowest (49.24mN/m) at frother concentration of 200ppm. Bubble size tend to increase when superficial gas rate (Jg) decreases and superficial wash water rate Jw and frother concentration increase. Gas holdup is proportional to superficial gas rate as well as frother concentration and superficial wash water rate (at the fixed superficial gas rate).

  • The Moon has been an attractive planet as an outpost for deep space exploration since He-3 and water ice which can be used as energy resources were discovered. In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) construction material fabrication method is required for sustainable space planet exploration. In this paper, the possibility of microwave sintering technology for construction material fabrication was evaluated using lunar regolith that can be easily collected from the Moon surface. Experimental assessment of the influence factors on microwave sintering was conducted using a hybrid sintering system for efficient processing. The heat distribution in the furnace was observed using thermal paper that is coated with a material formulated to change color when exposed to heat. Based on this result, sintered cylindrical KLS-1s with a diameter of 1 cm and a height of 2 cm were fabricated. Densities were measured for the sintered KLS-1s under rotating turntable conditions that have an effect of microwave dispersion. The more dielectrics were arranged, the more microwaves were dispersed reducing the heat concentration, and thus a uniformity of sintered KLS-1s was enhanced.

  • The catalytic yields of partial oxidation of methane (POM) to hydrogen over Ln(1)-Ni(5)/SBA-15 (Ln = Dy, Eu, Pr, and Tb) were investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor under atmosphere. As 1 wt% of Eu was added to Ni(5)/SBA-15 catalyst, the O1s and Si2p core electron levels of Eu(1)-Ni(5)/SBA-15 showed the chemical shift by XPS. XPS analysis also demonstrated that the atomic ratio of O1s, Ni2p3/2, and Si2p increased to 1.284, 1.298, and 1.058, respectively, and exhibited O-, and O2- oxygen and metal ions such as Eu3+, Ni0, Ni2+, and Si4+ on the catalyst surface. The yield of hydrogen on the Eu(1)-Ni(5)/SBA-15 was 57.2%, which was better than that of Ln(1)-Ni(5)/SBA-15 (Ln = Dy, Pr, and Tb), the catalytic activity was kept steady even 25 h. As 1 wt% of Eu was added to Ni(5)/SBA-15, the oxygen vacancies caused by strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) effect due to the strong interaction between metals and carrier are made. They are resulted in increasing the dispersion of Ni0, and Ni2+ nano particles on the surface of catalyst, and are kept catalytic activity.

  • The water resistance is important factor for sunscreen formulations. Generally a sunscreen cream was formulated by a water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion. In the W/O emulsion system, silicone oils are added to improve the texture of formulations. Silicone oils have low compatibility with organic sunscreen agent, causing problems with the stability in emulsion. In this study, the compatibility between various oils in the W/O emulsion was derived numerically using Hansen solubility parameter (HSP) at first. HSP is represented a dispersion degree, a polarity, and a hydrgen bond in a composition. In this study, various emulsions were prepared according to the types of oils with different HSP values and then monitored by a viscosity and morphology according to the time and temperature. The HSP values of components and the experimental results have similar activities for the stability of emulsions. HSP made it easy to select oil with high compatibility. When the compatibility of the oil phase in the W/O emulsion was high, the viscosity change over time was small. The stability was improved under the freeze-thaw cycle (-15 ℃ ~ 45 ℃). In the future, if the composition of the ingredients is optimized through HSP, it is expected that it will be helpful in the development of W/O type sunscreen formulations that are excellent in use and stability.

  • Korea depends on the import of raw materials such as iron ore and coal for the steel industry. These raw materials have a major impact on the cost, productivity, and quality competitiveness in the global steel industry. To secure the competitiveness of steel companies, it is necessary to reduce the country's dependence on raw materials. This can be achieved using byproducts with a high Fe content, which are primarily generated by the steel industry. These byproducts are available in the form of a very fine powder, which can disperse as dust when used directly in plant processes. Dust dispersion has a negative impact on the environment and can lead to the loss of raw materials. To enable the use of a wide range of Fe-containing byproducts, it is necessary to pretreat them in the form of larger aggregates such as pellets and briquettes. There are several methods to achieve such aggregates. There are two ways to produce briquettes: using a hot briquette, which supplies additional heat to produce briquettes, or using a cold briquette, which does not use heat. A method for producing cold briquettes using Fe-containing byproducts was investigated in this study. The yield ratio and briquette strength were examined under various manufacturing conditions.

  • The purpose of this paper was to describe a statistical analysis for the spatial distribution of geographical distances of Erythronium japonicum at Mt. Geumjeong in Korea. The spatial pattern of E. japonicum was analyzed according to the nearest neighbor rule, population aggregation under different plot sizes by dispersion indices, and spatial autocorrelation. Most natural plots of E. japonicum were uniformly distributed in the forest community. Disturbed plots were aggregately distributed within 5 m × 5 m of one another. Neighboring patches of E. japonicum were predominantly 7.5~10 m apart on average. If the natural populations of E. japonicum were disturbed by human activities, then the aggregation occurred in a shorter distance than the 7.5~10 m distance scale. The Morisita index (IM) is related to the patchiness index (PAI) that showed the 2.5 m × 5 m plot had an overly steep slope at the west and south areas when the area was smaller than 5 m × 5 m. When the patch size was one 2.5 m × 5 m quadrat at the west distributed area of Mt. Geumjeong, the cluster was determined by both species characteristics and environmental factors. The comparison of Moran's I values to a logistic regression indicated that individuals in E. japonicum populations at Mt. Geumjeong could be explained by isolation by distance.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of the CexZr1-xO2 (CZ) addition onto Ni/Al2O3 catalysts on the catalytic performance in methane steam reforming. In the reaction results, the CZ-added Ni/Al2O3 catalyst showed higher CH4 conversion and H2 yield under the same reaction conditions than Ni/Al2O3. From the characterization data, the two catalysts had similar support porosity and Ni dispersion, confirming that the two properties could not determine the catalytic performance. However, the oxygen vacancy over the CZ-added Ni/Al2O3 catalyst induced an efficient steam activation at low reaction temperatures, resulting in an increase in the catalytic activity and H2 yield.

  • A column testing device capable of measuring the electrical resistivity of soil at 3 different locations was developed to verify applicability of bulk electrical conductivity (BEC) breakthrough curves in monitoring contaminant transport. Tracer injection tests were conducted with three different types of saturated sands to obtain average linear velocities and longitudinal hydrodynamic dispersion coefficients based on BEC breakthrough curves and effluent solute breakthrough curves. Comparative analysis of transport parameters obtained from curve fitting the results into the analytical solutions confirmed the validity of resistance measurements in estimating time-continuous resident solute concentration. Under the assumption that a linear relationship exists between ${\sigma}_{sat}-{\sigma}_w-C$, the BEC breakthrough curves are able to effectively reduce the laborious and time-consuming processes involved in the conventional method of sampling and analysis. In order to reduce possible uncertainties in analyzing the BEC breakthrough curves, it was recommended that resistance measurements take place nearby the effluent boundary. In addition, a sufficient electrical contrast or difference in the electrical conductivity of the influent and the saturating solution is required to conduct reliable analysis.
