  • Purpose: We compared the Korean Triage and Acuity Scale (KTAS), Injury Severity Score (ISS), and Revised Trauma Score (RTS) determined the validity of KTAS for classifying trauma patients. Methods: A retrospective chart review of 10,865 trauma patients (aged ≥15 years) who visited a single regional trauma and emergency medical center from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2020, was conducted. Data were collected from the Korean Trauma Data Bank. Based on KTAS classification, the rates of intensive care unit admission, surgery and intervention, transfusion, emergency room (ER) and hospital mortality, and ER stay time were investigated. Data were analyzed using Chi-square test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, receiver operating characteristic curve, and area under the ROC curve. Results: In the KTAS, severe trauma patients (ISS ≥16) were classified as Level 1 (79.6%), 2 (44.8%), 3 (15.5%), 4 (4.0%) and 5 (7.6%). The following were the predictive powers of KTAS, ISS, and RTS for different parameters: surgery and intervention rate, KTAS (.71), ISS (.70), and RTS (.63); transfusion rate within 4h, KTAS (.82), ISS (.82), and RTS (.74); ER stay time within 90 min, KTAS (.72), ISS (.62), and RTS (.56); and ER mortality, KTAS (.84), ISS (.72), and RTS (.88). These findings were statistically significant (p<.001). The sensitivity and specificity of KTAS for trauma patients were .88 (.87~.90), and .38 (.37~.39), respectively. Conclusion: KTAS is a useful classification system that can predict the clinical outcomes of patients with trauma, and effectively triage acutely ill trauma patients, thus provide appropriate treatment.

  • Objectives: Traditional Korean medicine (TKM) has been supplied as part of a national health care system in South Korea under a dual medical system, however it has been difficult to mix western medicine and TKM medical practices in existing hospitals. For the objective of innovative integration between them, Comprehensive and Integrative Medicine Hospital were founded in Daegu, South Korea. Here, we discussed the clinical outcomes of cancer patients who received integrative cancer treatment (ICT). Methods: A total of 678 patients previously diagnosed with cancer were retrospectively checked in our institution for 2 years. After applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, 573 patients were eligible for the final analysis. The overall survival (OS) of these patients in the aftercare period were determined. We looked at how clinical factors and treatments including chemotherapy, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), and TKM affected the OS. Results: At the first visit, 212 subjects had no evidence of disease after tumor resection and 355 ones with advanced cancer, who receiving ICT including chemotherapy, CAM, and TKM showed better OS compared to the CAM including TKM or the best supportive care (median OS = 216, 78, and 46 days, respectively). The median OS was not reached in TKM only, even though the sample size was small (N=12). Even after adjusting for clinical factors associated to liver, renal, and hematologic manifestation, ICT still remained significant. Conclusions: We demonstrated that ICT might be beneficial for advanced cancer regardless of the performance status, liver and renal function, since it positively affected the OS.

  • Although many research efforts have been conducted to address the effect of crew members' work skills (e.g., technical and planning skills) on work performance (e.g., work duration and quality) in construction projects, the relationship between skill and performance has generated a great deal of controversy in the field of management (Inkpen and Crossan 1995). This controversy can lead to under- or over-estimations of the overall project schedule, and can make it difficult for project managers to implement appropriate managerial policies for enhancing project performance. To address this issue, the following aspects need to be considered: (a) work performances are determined not only by individual-level work skill but also by the group-level work skill affected by work team members, each member's role, and any working behavior pattern; (b) work planning has significant effects on to what extent work skill enhances performance; and (c) different types of activities in construction require different types of work, skill, and team composition. This research, therefore, develops a system dynamics (SD) model to analyze the effects of both individual-and group-level (i.e., multi-level) skill on performances by utilizing the advantages of SD in capturing a feedback process and state changes, especially in human factors (e.g., attitude, ability, and behavior). The model incorporates: (a) a multi-level skill evolution and relevant behavior development mechanism within a work group; (b) the interaction among work planning, a crew's skill-learning, skill manifestation, and performances; and (c) the different work characteristics of each activity. This model can be utilized to implement appropriate work planning (e.g., work scope and work schedule) and crew management policies (e.g., work team composition and decision of each worker's role) with an awareness of crew's skill and work performance. Understanding the different characteristics of each activity can also support project managers in applying strategic work planning and crew management for a corresponding activity, which may enhance each activity's performance, as well as the overall project performance.

  • Background: 2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) is widely used as a flame-retardant plasticizer in the production of polyvinyl chloride, adhesives, and food packaging. This chemical has been frequently detected in water, sediment, and indoor environments, and its lipophilicity raises concerns about bioaccumulation. Objectives: In this study, the effects of EHDPP on the development, behavioral changes, and growth hormone (GH) endocrine system of zebrafish larvae were investigated. Methods: Fertilized embryos were exposed to various concentrations (control, solvent control, 0.07, 0.7, 7, 70, and 700 ㎍/L) of EHDPP for 96 h. Developmental toxicity endpoints were observed daily. Behavioral changes under light-dark-light conditions and changes in hormones and genes related to GH/insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) axis were determined. Results: Significant decreases in survival, body length and moving distance were observed in zebrafish larvae exposed to 70 and 700 ㎍/L EHDPP. The concentrations of GH and IGF-1 were significantly decreased in zebrafish larvae exposed to 70 and 700 ㎍/L EHDPP. This change was well supported by changes in the transcription of genes involved in GH, IGF, IGF receptors, and IGF binding proteins. Conclusions: Our observations showed that exposure to 70 and 700 ㎍/L EHDPP could disrupt the feedback circuits of the GH/IGFs axis, ultimately leading to developmental toxicity, hypoactivity, and mortality.

  • We developed a coin cell battery using high-strength carbon fiber and glass fiber, taking a preliminary step toward creating a battery that supports structural loads and stores energy, with potential applications in satellite structures. High-strength fiber-based electrodes and electrolytes were fabricated and applied to coin cells to evaluate their electrochemical performance. Consequently, the discharge capacities under continuous charge/discharge cycles and high discharge rates of 2 C-rate were determined to be 122.9 and 103.5 mAh/g, respectively, indicating that high-strength fibers can replace conventional battery components. Although current performance is lower than that of commercial batteries, this research has demonstrated significant potential as foundational work for multi-functional energy storage devices and is expected to contribute to the development of structural batteries for satellite applications.

  • Nonstoichiometric solid solutions of $Y_{1-x}A_xFeO_{3-y}$ (A = Ca, Sr) systems with perovskite structure were prepared for x = 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00 at 1200$^{\circ}C$ under atmospheric pressure, respectively. Crystallographic structures of the solid solutions of all compositions have been determined by the analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns. Reduced lattice volume of the $Y_{1-x}Ca_xFeO_{3-y}$ system was decreased with increasing x value and that of the $Y_{1-x}Sr_xFeO_{3-y}$ system was increased with increasing the x value. The mole ratios of $ Fe^{4+}$ to $ Fe^{3+}$, ${\tau}$, values in the solid solutions have been determined by Mohr salt's method of analysis and then the mixed valency was identified by Mossbauer spectroscopic analysis at 298 K. The y values were calculated from the x and ${\tau}$, and then nonstoichiometric chemical formulas were fixed. The conduction mechanism could be explained by hopping model of the conduction electrons between the mixed valence states.

  • Polysaccharides which show reticuloendothelial system potentiating activity in carbon clearance tests have been examined in water extracts of Panx species. From the dried roots of P. notoginseng, an active polysaccharide called sanchinan-A was isolated. The molecular weight of sanchinan-A was estimated to be 1,500,000D and the structure was determined to be $\beta$-D-(1-3-galactan), possessing branch points at positions 0-6 at which (mainly-$\alpha$-L-arabinofuranosyl and partly $\beta$-D-galactopyranosyl)-(1-6)-$\beta$-D-galacto-pyranosyl-(1-3)-$\beta$-D-galactopyranosyl side chains are attached on average, to two of three galactosyl units. From dried rhizomes of P. japonicus, several active polysaccharides were also isolated, and these structuers were also determined. From the dried roots of P. ginseng, several polysaccharides which showed strong activity were isolated. The structures of these compounds are currently under investigation. The polysaccharide fraction (non-dialyzed fraction) of the water extract of red ginseng (steam-dried roots) did not exhibit activity, while the dialyzed fraction potentiated RES. Activity disappeared, however, during the process of separation due to the presence of a substance in the fraction which stabilizes an active substance.

  • The scissor-type rope cutter is the most widely used amongst all kinds of commercially available rope cutters in Korea. In this study, we performed finite element analysis on the scissor-type rope cutter. We determined the structure of the cutter that would ensure its stable operation in various situations involving rope entanglement, and verified its effectiveness by testing it in the lab and in an actual ship. These investigations revealed that when the propeller shaft was not rotated by rope entanglement, the constant torque generated by the engine resulted in the torsion of the rope cutter and maximum deformation in the lower blade, which was not restricted by finite element analysis. With increasing blade thickness, the maximum values of deformation and equivalent stress decreased, resulting in a rise in the safety factor. At the constant blade thickness, the effect of the torque variations on the maximum equivalent stress and the maximum deformation is independent of the position of the external force of the rope cutter and decreases in direct proportion. The results of this study confirmed that the rope-cutter structure determined by analysis could lead to a hassle-free removal of ropes and fishing nets under all conditions and environments.

  • We developed PC-based planning system for linear accelerator based stereotactic radiosurgery. The system was developed under Windows 95 on Pentium Pro$\^$(R) 200 ㎒ IBM PC with 128 MB RAM. It was programed using IDL$\^$(R)/ of Research Systems, Inc. as a programing tool. CT image data obtained with BRW stereotactic frame is transferred to PC through magnetoptical disk. As loading the image, the system automatically recognizes the location of rods and establishes stereotactic coordinates. It accurately calculates and corrects the coordinates, degree of tilting, and magnification rate of axial images. After the coordinates is defined we can delineate and edit the contours of target and organs of interest on axial images. Upon delineating contours of target, isocenter is determined automatically and we can set up the beam configuration for radiosurgery. The system provides beam's eye view and room's eye view for efficient confuguring of beams. The system calculates dose distribution 3-dimensionally. It takes 1 to 2 minutes to calculate dose distribution for 5 arcs. We can verify the dose distribution on serial axial images. We can analyze the dose distribution quantitatively by evaluation of dose-volume histogram of target and organ of interest. This system, PC-based radiosurgery planning system, includes the basic features for radiosurgery planning and calculates dose distribution within reasonable time for clinical application.

  • This study was carried out to improve the performance of pre-developed heat recovery devices attached to exhaust-gas flue connected to combustion chamber of greenhouse heating system. Four different units were compared in the aspect of heat recovery performance; A-, B-, and C-types are exactly the same with the old ones reported in previous studies. D-type newly developed in this experiment is mainly different with the old ones in its heat exchange area and tube thickness. But airflow direction(U-turn) and pipe arrangement are similar with previous three types. The results are summarized as follows; 1. System performances in the aspect of heat recovery efficiency were estimated as 42.2% for A-type, 40.6% for B-type, 54.4% for C-type, and 69.2% for D-type. 2. There was not significant improvement of heat recovering efficiency between two different airflow directions inside the heat exchange system. But considering current technical conditions, straight air flow pattern has more advantage than hair-pin How pattern (U-turn f1ow). 3. The main factors influencing on heat recovery efficiency were presumably verified to be the total area of heat exchange surface, the thickness of ail-flow pipes, and the convective heat transfer coefficient influenced by airflow velocity under the conditions of allowable pipe durability and safety. 4. Desirable blower capacity for each type of heat recovery units were significantly different to each other. Therefore, the optimum airflow capacity should be determined by considering in economic aspect of electricity required together with the optimum heat recovery performance of given heat recovery systems.
