  • Sclerosed and pitted tyloses were discovered in the springwood tracheids of Taxodium distichum Rich stemwood which has taxodioid or cupressoid cross field pits, and these tyloses were believed to be caused by protrusion of enlarged ray parenchyma cells into tracheid lumina.

Comparison of Anatomical Characteristics for Wood Damaged by Oak Wilt and Sound Wood from Quercus mongolica (참나무시들음병 신갈나무 피해목과 건전목의 해부학적 특징 비교)

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomical characteristics of Quercus mongolica infested by oak wilt disease. To analysis the anatomical characteristics of the wood specimens infested by the oak wilt, the anatomical structures of an infected wood, a dead wood, and sound wood were observed at 10-year-old intervals from 10 to 50 annual rings using both an optical and a scanning electron microscope. The fiber length was measured in units of 5 annual rings from the pith, and the diameter of the vessel element and the ratio of the vessel including the tyloses were measured for each 10 annual ring. In the cross section, on the infected and dead wood specimens, mycelium was also observed with the tyloses in the vessel. There was no signification difference between the wood specimens in the fiber length and the vessel diameter of the vessel element. The fiber length was not difference after 20-30 annual rings which is a part of juvenile wood. The average of the vessel ratio including tyloses in the infected wood was the highest. Especially, the ratio of tyloses was the highest 40-50 annual rings in the infected wood and the dead wood. Therefore, the large difference between the infested wood by oak wilt and the sound wood was the ratio of tyloses. This result can be used as a basic data to utilize the infested wood.

  • This paper describes experimental results on the utilization of some Korean oak woods for whisky aging barrel. Some anatomical characteristics as vessel diameter, ray spacing, ray height, existence of tyloses, water absorption and color change of alcohol during immersing of wood samples were examined. The oak woods used in this study were ring-porous. The type of ray was a compound ray consisted of uniseriate ray and broad ray. The ray parenchyma cells were almost procumbent, tyloses were presented in white oak(Quercus aliena, Quercus variabilis, Quercus dentata, Quercus mongolica), but absented in red oak(Quercus rubura). Density of wood samples decreased during immersing in alcohol. Alcohol color in Quercus dentata and Quercus aliena presented more darker than other samples. Water absorption of sapwoods was higher than that of heartwoods. Especially, red oak showed more higher water absorption than white oak. Consequently, Korean white oak woods can be used as the whisky aging barrel.

  • In order ot obtain the information on wood quality of the Populus nigra $\times$ maximowiczii the distributions of crystalliferous substancess, ty loses and tension woods were examined through light microscopy or scanning electron microscopy. 1. The crystalliferous subtance, presumably calcium oxalate. partially occurred in vessel elements of heartwood, and sporadically in ray parenchyma, but not in the wood fibers The types of crystalliferous subtances were mainly crystal sand, $2-3{\mu}m$ in diameter. 2. The tyloses arranged in a ladder-like series were sporadically formed in the vessel elements of heartwood. 3. Although the woods were cut from the straightly grown stem without any evident disorientation with respect to gravitational axis, single or group of gelatinous fibers were irregularly distributed among normal wood fibers.

  • Wilt disease in Oak trees occurs during summer season in Korea. Mass attack of trees by an ambrosia beetle (Platypus koryoensis) was the characteristic feature before appearance of the wilting symptoms. Raffaelea sp. caused the discoloration of xylem area called as wound heartwood. Raffaelea sp. was observed both on the body surfaces and inside the mycangia of the beetle Platypus sp. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed that fungal spores were present within the wall of gallery and vessels that formed tyloses. The results revealed that the water movement in vessels was blocked as the fungus started to grow which caused the formation of tyloses thereby resulting wilt symptoms. We found that both female and male beetle Platypus sp. had fungi on their bodies and their large and small mycangia. This study confirmed that the fungus was transferred to oak trees by Platypus sp.

  • To understand water flow path in the cells of Robinia pseudoacacia and Pyrus ussuriensis and obtain color wood from them, this experiment was performed by penetrating 0.5% acidic fuchsin and 0.5% fast green solution into the living wood of them. A comparison was made of the wood structure and water flow path from Robinia pseudoacacia containing the ring-porous wood with tyloses, and Pyrus ussuriensis including solitary diffuse-porous wood with distinct fiber pits. The dye penetrated into vessel elements in the early wood of two growth rings from bark in Robinia pseudoacacia, but permeated all xylem in fonts ussuriensis. In Robinia pseudoacacia, the vessels of heart wood and intermediate wood were not stained because of tyloses.

  • 1. The physical and anatomical properties investigated in this study are the ones, which may give more effect on absorption of preservatives, such as variation of annual ring, specific gravity, shrinkage, E.M.C. of desorption and adsorption at 70 percent relative humidity condition, general and minute properties of wood. 2. On this study, the positive effects of wood structure, in particular, the appearances of tyloses in vessel element upon the absorption of creosote were observed. 3. Thirteen percent sodium chloride solution treatment and boiling hot water treatment have shown poor results to improve the preservative absorption characteristics of tested species however, some slight difference between treated and control could be seen.   • In this report, we describe the anatomical features of Gmelina arborea Roxb. belong to the genera of Verbenaceae native to Bangladesh and safranine penetration depth in radial and longitudinal directions. The wood of this species was characterized mostly by distinct growth ring boundaries, diffuse-porous, simple perforations, alternate non-vestured intervessel pits, and relatively short vessel elements and medium fibers. Thin to thick walled septate fibers with simple to minutely bordered pits are confined to the radial walls. Tyloses are common. They are paratracheal axial parenchyma vascicnetric and confluent. Rays not higher than 1milimeter are found, and larger rays commonly 4 to 5 seriate are dominantly present, as are multi seriate rays composed of a procumbent ray with 1 row of square or upright cells. Acicular crystals are present in ray cells. Another experiment was taken under consideration to observe the liquid penetration depth in longitudinal and radial directions using safranine. It was found that safranine penetrated easily in longitudinal direction and sapwood was more permeable than heartwood.

  • In this paper, it has been discussed on the relation between the anatomical features of woods and the penetration of methyl methacrylate monomer system into major Korean tree species, especially the Pinus koraiensis, Larix leptolepis, Quercus mongolica and Tilia amurensis. 1. There was some differences in penetration of polymers among different tree species, but generally the penetration of ring porous woods seems to be larger than that of diffuse porous woods and it was very difficult to penetrate to Larix leptolepis, especially to the that of heart wood. 2. The penetration on transeverse surface was relatively easy but radial and tangential impregnation were somewhat hard and differences between them were negligible. 3. The penetration of sapwood was larger than that of heartwood and its differences varied according to the existence of tyloses or contents in vessel. 4. Generally the polymer penetration of earlywood was larger than that of latewood in ring porous woods, but on the contrary, penetration of earlywood was small than that of latewood on diffuse porous woods. 5. Vessel diameter of wood had nearly no relation to polymers penetration. This seems to come from the reason that effective vessel diameter varies with the existence of tyloses or contents in vessel. 6. The penetration of ray tracheids was larger than that of ray parenchyma cells in softwoods, but penetration of hardwood rays seems to be small in comparison with softwood ray parenchyma cells. 7. Specific gravity and annual ring width had no relation to the penetration of polymer.

Annual Ring Formation in Major Wood Species Growing in Chuncheon, Korea(II) - Formation of Resin canals, Tyloses and Latewood - (춘천지역에서 생장하는 주요 수종의 연륜형성(II) - 수지구, 타일로시스 및 만재부 형성 -)

  • This study was carried out to investigate on the formation of resin canal, tylosis and latewood of the major species growing in Chuncheon. Two species of softwoods (Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis) and two species of hardwoods (Quercus mongolica and Robinia pseudoacacia) were used in this experiment. The resin canals of P. densiflora and P. koraiensis were formed from the beginning through the middle of July and in the beginning of May, respectively. It is clear that the resin canal of P. koraiensis was formed much earlier than that of P. densiflora. The tylosis in vessel of Q. mongolica was formed in the middle of May, and the formation in R. pseudoacacia was in the end of May. The latewood in P. densiflora was formed in the middle of August. The latewood in P. koraiensis was formed from the end of September through the beginning of October. While latewood vessels in Q. mongolica were formed in the end of May, and those in R. pseudoacacia from the beginning of June through the middle of June. Consequently, the period of resin canals, tyloses and latewood formation was different among the sample trees, even though the trees were grown under the same conditions.
