  • To determine the effect of newly developed insecticide on two spotted spider mite, Tetranychus Urticae, populations, ten leaf discs were sprayed with three different concentrations (0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5%) of the tested insecticide solution, and with a water-sprayed control. The tested insecticide solution was toxic to adult female and immature of two spotted spider mite, but was relatively non-toxic to eggs. For equivalent concentrations, more adult females were killed than immature stages. There was no marked difference between the hatch of treated and untreated eggs, although a weak trend between the numbers of unhatched eggs and the insecticide concentration after 7 days is shown.

  • Asthma and allergic rhinitis due to outdoor spider mites are major health problems worldwide. The sensitization route to spider mites has not yet been well elucidated. We examined the microstructure of faecal pellets and silk of the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Black and white pellets of the two-spotted spider mites faeces contain a large amount of plant pigment waste products. Black faecal pellets are strawberry-shaped. White faecal pellets are silken threads. These pellets are likely to be the source of allergens of relevant mites because desiccated faeces particles probably disintegrate and become incorporated into dust particles more readily than whole bodies or encased internal organs. We conclude that the importance of spider mites in respiratory allergy needs emphasis.

  • The two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) has sustained damage on more than 200 host plants worldwide. Many farmers have relied on chemical acaricides to control mite, but the abuse of acaricides has caused serious resistance to mite. To overcome this problem, microbial control using entomopathogenic fungi have been studied. Entomopathogenic fungi have been an important role against the control of pest, and most of their culture products have been demonstrated to have virulence against pest population. In this study, we evaluated and compared the virulence of culture filtrates, aerial conidia and blastospores of selected Metarhizium anisopliae 4-2 and Beauveria bassiana 2R-3-3-1, respectively, among two-spotted spider mite-pathogenic fungi. As a result, the virulence was confirmed in all treatments, and the accumulated mortality rates were between 77 and 100% within 7 days. Especially, treatment with the fungal culture filtrate alone exhibited quite high virulence, and combined treatment with aerial conidia or blastospores enhanced activity. However, the median lethal time of treatments was not significantly different. When two isolates were compared, M. anisopliae 4-2 showed higher virulence than B. bassiana 2R-3-3-1. These results suggest that the selected two fungal isolates and their culture products could be used effectively for the control of two-spotted spider mite.

  • Six insecticides, monocrotophos (24%, Lq), milbemectin (1%, Ec), tebufenpyrad (10%, Ec), propargite (30%, Wp), dicofol (42%, Ec), and fenpropathrin (5%, Ec) were studied for their $LC_{50}s$ to local two-spotted spider mite (TSSM) strains collected at apple orchards in Chungju, Kunwi and Sobo in Korea. Monocrotophos and fenpropathrin were not effective due to resistance development, but milbemectin, tebufenpyrad, dicofol and propargite were effective to TSSM. $LC_{50}$ values to TSSM strains showed the same distribution pattern among apple orchards. However, TSSMs from different apple orchard were clustered into different groups.

  • Powdery mildew and two-spotted spider mite are detrimental to strawberry plants and are controlled with traditional pesticides. To accommodate consumer demand, eco-friendly methods of pest control are required. Strawberries were cultivated (in soil and in a hydroponic system) for two years, and ultraviolet B (UV-B) irradiation was used as an alternative pest control during the harvesting season. Three varieties were grown (Seolhyang, Kingsberry, and Durihyang), and four UV-B lamp/mulch (black, green, and light reflection sheet [LRS]) combinations were used during harvesting: UV-B+black or green mulch, UV-B+black or green+LRS, no UV-B+black or green, and no UV-B+black or green+LRS. In all varieties, powdery mildew was 65% more controlled when UV-B irradiation was used. The adult two-spotted spider mite density was lowest in the UV-B lamp+black or green+LRS treatments. Therefore, UV-B irradiation during the strawberry harvesting season could effectively control powdery mildew and two-spotted spider mite with little side effect on the plants.

  • These studies were conducted to investigate the development of chemical resistance in two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) through alternate selection for a given period of time with four acaricides including ethion of organophophours compound, dicofol of organo-chlorine compound, cyhexatin of organo-tin compound, and biphenthrin of synthetic pyrethroid compound; and to examine multiple-resistance among the acaricides to the selected populations. The development levels of chemical resistance in the two-spotted spider mite were greatly varied under alternate selection with the different chemical-group combination of four acaricides. Resistant levels of the ethion/dicofol-selected population at 13th-13th generation showed 49.4-fold resistance to ethion and 18.1-fold to dicofol; the ethion/cyhexatin-selected population at 9th-9th generation exhibited 28.1-fold to ethion and 5-fold to cyhexatin; the ethion/biphenthrin-selectd population at 10th-10th generation revealed 39.8-fold to ethion and 19.2-fold to biphenthrin. However, the dicofol/cyhexatin-selected population at 9th-9th generation showed 11.3-fold to dicofol and 4.9-fold to cyhexatin, and the dicofol/biphenthrin-selected population at 12th-12th generation exhibited 11.2-fold to dicofol and 9.4- fold to biphenthrin, while the cyhexatin/biphenthrin-selected population at 9th-9th generation revealed 3.7-fold to cyhexatin and 7.7-fold to biphenthrin. In case of alternate selection, the ehtion/dicofol-selected population revealed moderate multiple-resistance level to biphenthrin. The ethion/cyhexatin-selected and the ethion/biphenthrin-selected populations showed low mutiple-resistance level to biphenthrin and dicofol, respectively. However, the dicofol/cyhexatin-selected, the dicofol/biphenthrin-selected and the cyhexatin/biphenthrin-selected populations exhibited high multiple-resistance level to ethion.

  • The potential of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis (Acarina : Phytoseiidae) to control two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae (Acarina : Tetranychidae) was investigated on sustainable strawberry fields in Jeonnam area. The density of T. urticae increased from 4th and 7th weeks after single and two timings release P. persimilis, respectively. On the three timings of release plot, number(density) of T. urticae on a leaf maintained fewer than 10 during the 15 weeks after release. In the 1,000 release of P. persimilis per $100m^2$ plot, P. persimilis could not suppress T. urticae. In the 2,000 release plot, P. persimilis could suppress T. urticae with low density which was the similar in the 3,000 release plot. Two-spotted spider mite, T. urticae, occurred from late March and increased density in Hampyeong area. In the P. persimilis released field, T. urticae inhibited continuously after release. In Boseong area, density of P. persimilis increased 50 per 10 leaves through increasing of T. urticae. Percent of occurrence of T. urticae showed high $10.5{\sim}75.5%$ in none-release predatory mite but not high in release treatment. T. urticae on sustainable strawberry field could be inhibited by P. persimilis.
