  • Here we show how by processing energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) data obtained using highly sensitive, new generation EDS detectors in the AZtec LayerProbe software we can obtain data of sufficiently high quality to non-destructively measure the number of layers in two-dimensional (2D) $MoS_2$ and $MoS_2/WSe_2$ and thereby enable the characterization of working devices based on 2D materials. We compare the thickness measurements with EDS to results from atomic force microscopy measurements. We also show how we can use electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to address fabrication challenges of 2D materials. Results from EBSD analysis of individual flakes of exfoliated $MoS_2$ obtained using the Nordlys Nano detector are shown to aid a better understanding of the exfoliation process which is still widely used to produce 2D materials for research purposes.

  • Two-dimensional (2D) materials containing hole defects are a promising substitute for conventional nanopore membranes like silicon nitride. Hole defects on 2D materials, as atomically thin nanopores, have been used in nanopore devices, such as DNA sensor, gas sensor and purifier at lab-scale. For practical applications of 2D materials to nanopore devices, researches on characteristics of hole defects on graphene, hexagonal boron nitride and molybdenum disulfide have been conducted precisely using transmission electron microscope. Here, we summarized formation, features, structural preference and stability of hole defects on 2D materials with atomic-resolution transmission electron microscope images and theoretical calculations, emphasizing the future challenges in controlling the edge structures and stabilization of hole defects. Exploring the properties at the local structure of hole defects through in situ experiments is also the important issue for the fabrication of realistic 2D nanopore devices.

  • Interest in eco-friendly materials with high efficiencies is increasing significantly as science and technology undergo a paradigm shift toward environment-friendly and sustainable development. MXenes, a class of two-dimensional inorganic compounds, are generally defined as transition metal carbides or nitrides composed of few-atoms-thick layers with functional groups. Recently MXenes, because of their desirable electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties that emerge from conductive layered structures with tunable surface terminations, have garnered significant attention as promising candidates for energy storage applications (e.g., supercapacitors and electrode materials for Li-ion batteries), water purification, and gas sensors. In this review, we introduce MXenes and describe their properties and research trends by classifying them into two main categories: transition metal carbides and nitrides, including Ti-based MXenes, Mo-based MXenes, and Nb-based MXenes.

  • The first example of lead compound from $Pb(NO_3)_2$ and $H_3L$ N-heterocyclic ligand $(H_3L\;=\;(HO_2C)_2(C_3N_2)(C_3H_7)CH_2(C_6H_4)(C_6H_3)CO_2H)$, $[Pb_4(L')_4]{\cdot}5H_2O$ 1 (L' = OOC$(C_3H_7)(C_3N_2)CH_2(C_6H_4)(C_6H_3)COO)$, has been obtained under hydrothermal condition by decarboxylation, and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, TGDTA, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 possesses a rare two-dimensional upper-lower offset terrace-like layer structure. In 1, crystallographic distinct Pb(II) ion adopts five-coordination geometry, and two lattice water molecules occupy the voids between 2-D layers. Results of solid state fluorescence measurement indicate that the emission band 458 nm may be assigned to $\pi^*-n$ and $\pi^*-\pi$ electronic transitions within the aromatic systems of the ligand L', however, the emission bands centred at 555 nm, 600 nm and 719 nm may be derived from phosphorescent emission ($\lambda_{excitation}$ = 390 nm).

  • The development of new materials is an essential key for unraveling the environmental and energy problems all over the world. Among the various application materials in this area, crystalline and two-dimensional carbon materials have been studied from points of view such as electrical conductivity, chemical stability, and surface engineering due to the assembly of honeycomb and sp/sp2 hybridization structure. Novel two-dimensional materials, including graphene and graphyne, have been continuously reported for several decades to develop in renewable energy fields. Also, various pristine/engineered two-dimensional carbon allotropes have been researched to combine metal nanoparticles in the form of a sphere, cubic, and so on. The renewable energy performance to apply for these materials is drastically increased. In this review, we introduce the research points of the 2D carbon allotrope materials, graphene and graphyne, and applications to improve the performance of renewable energy applications.

  • Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials have demonstrated the potential to replace silicon and compound semiconductors that are conventionally used in photodetectors. These materials are ultrathin and have superior electrical and optoelectronic properties as well as mechanical flexibility. Consequently, they are particularly advantageous for fabricating high-performance photodetectors that can be used for wearable device applications and Internet of Things technology. Although prototype photodetectors based on single microflakes of 2D materials have demonstrated excellent photoresponsivity across the entire optical spectrum, their practical applications are limited due to the difficulties in scaling up the synthesis process while maintaining the optoelectronic performance. In this review, we discuss facile methods to mass-produce 2D material-based photodetectors based on the exfoliation of van der Waals crystals into nanosheet dispersions. We first introduce the liquid-phase exfoliation process, which has been widely investigated for the scalable fabrication of photodetectors. Solution processing techniques to assemble 2D nanosheets into thin films and the optoelectronic performance of the fabricated devices are also presented. We conclude by discussing the limitations associated with liquid-phase exfoliation and the recent advances made due to the development of the electrochemical exfoliation process with molecular intercalants.

  • Two-dimensional computer simulations were conducted on percolation structure in which second phases of various aspect ratios were arranged in a lattice (matrix). The second phases were randomly arranged in an array with two different computational programs; one prohibiting an overlap among second phases and the other allowing the overlap. From the simulation prohibiting the overlap, it was predicted that a complete path was formed at less amounts of the second phase with higher aspect ratios. In the simulation allowing the overlap, a complete path throughout the array was formed by arranging the second phase of an aspect ratio of 1. 5, 20, 100 with less than 59%, 43%, 19%, 4% in the array, respectively.

  • The most 3-Dimensional problems of composite materials, especially three-dimensional stress or strain distribution on jointed boundary in composite materials remains unsolved due to the limitations of analytic techniques. The purpose of this paper is to apply the Embedded Grid Method to model development to measure the three-dimensional strain distribution along the jointed boundary of composite materials which consist of two different materials. It was confirmed that the Embedded Grid Method was very useful in model development and measuring the three-dimensional strain distribution in a local region near the jointed boundary.

  • The design and synthesis of protein-like polymers is a fundamental challenge in materials science. A biomimetic approach is to explore the impact of monomer sequence on non-natural polymer structure and function. We present the aqueous self-assembly of two peptoid polymers into extremely thin two-dimensional (2D) crystalline sheets directed by periodic amphiphilicity, electrostatic recognition and aromatic interactions. Peptoids are sequence-specific, oligo-N-substituted glycine polymers designed to mimic the structure and functionality of proteins. Mixing a 1:1 ratio of two oppositely charged peptoid 36 mers of a specific sequence in aqueous solution results in the formation of giant, free-floating sheets with only 2.7 nm thickness. Direct visualization of aligned individual peptoid chains in the sheet structure was achieved using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. Specific binding of a protein to ligand-functionalized sheets was also demonstrated. The synthetic flexibility and biocompatibility of peptoids provide a flexible and robust platform for integrating functionality into defined 2D nanostructures. In the later part of my talk, we describe the use of metal ions to construct two-dimensional hybrid films that have the ability to self-heal. Incubation of biomimetic peptoid polymers with specific divalent metal ions results in the spontaneous formation of uniform multilayers at the air-water interface. We anticipate that ease of synthesis and transfer of these two-dimensional materials may have many potential applications in catalysis, gas storage and sensing, optics, nanomaterial synthesis, and environmentally responsive scaffolds.

  • For BEM analyses of the impact problems of dissimilar materials, the connected multi-region method using perfect bonded conditions on the interface boundaries was added to two-dimensional Laplace transformed-domain BEM program for a single region analysis. It was confirmed that the BEM results of impact problems of a single-region and multi-regions for a homogeneous isotropic material are agreed well. The two-dimensional Laplace transformed-domain BEM program combined with connected multi-region method was applied to analyse several impact problems of dissimilar materials. Also the feasibility of BEM impact analyses was investigated for dissimilar materials by the analysis of the BEM results for impact problems of dissimilar materials in terms of physical aspects. As for an application, the two-dimensional Laplace transformed BEM concerning impact problems of cracks at the interface of dissimilar materials and the determinating process of the dynamic stress intensity factors by extrapolation method are presented in this paper.
