  • This study was initiated to investigate soil chemical properties under different soil systems. Data such as soil acidity(pH), electrical conductivity(EC), organic matter content(OMC), and cation exchange capacity(CEC) were analyzed with samples from multi-layer, USGA, and mono-layer systems. N, P, K and micronutrients were also measured. Multi-layer system was built up to 60-cm depth with rootzone layer, intermediate layer and two drainage layers. USGA system 45 centimeters deep was constructed with rootzone layer, intermediate layer and drainage layer. Mono-layer system, however, was made only with a 30-cm rootzone layer. Differences were observed in soil pH, EC, OMC, CEC and micronutrients. Soil pH was acceptable for turfgrass growth a year after establishment, being 5.5 to 6.5 in the study. Differences were greatly observed for EC among soil systems. Values of EC for multi-layer, USGA, and mono-layer systems were 39.79, 31.26 and 103.54 uS/em, respectively. The increase rate was approximately 4 to 8 times greater with mono-layer system than those with other two systems. Therefore, it was necessary to avoid micronutrient deficiency such as Fe, Mn etc. through an effective management program in mono-layer system because of its faster potential feasibility of salt accumulation. The greatest OMC was associated with USGA system, being 0.97% which was 11% over that of the other systems. Slight differences were observed for CEC among them. Mono-layer system produced 1.45 me/100g, 10.3% and 8.9% lower in CEC than those of multi-layer and USGA system, respectively. Micronutrients such as Fe, Zn, and Mn etc. were below the level required for turf growth, regardless of soil systems. It was considered that one year after turf establishment was not enough to build up micronutrients in sand-based soil systems to the normal level for a turf growth. These results demonstrate that intensive management program including grow-in concept fertilization should be integrated into sand-based soil systems, even after a year in establishment. Regular nutrient monitoring by soil analyses is a strong necessity to decide the kinds and amount of fertilizer. Also, strategic management program must be selectively employed according to sports turf soil systems.

  • We propose a speedy two-step deposit process to form an Au electrode on hole transport layer(HTL) without any damage using a general thermal evaporator in a perovskite solar cell(PSC). An Au electrode with a thickness of 70 nm was prepared with one-step and two-step processes using a general thermal evaporator with a 30 cm source-substrate distance and $6.0{\times}10^{-6}$ torr vacuum. The one-step process deposits the Au film with the desirable thickness through a source power of 60 and 100 W at a time. The two-step process deposits a 7 nm-thick buffer layer with source power of 60, 70, and 80 W, and then deposits the remaining film thickness at higher source power of 80, 90, and 100 W. The photovoltaic properties and microstructure of these PSC devices with a glass/FTO/$TiO_2$/perovskite/HTL/Au electrode were measured by a solar simulator and field emission scanning electron microscope. The one-step process showed a low depo-temperature of $88.5^{\circ}C$ with a long deposition time of 90 minutes at 60 W. It showed a high depo-temperature of $135.4^{\circ}C$ with a short deposition time of 8 minutes at 100 W. All the samples showed an ECE lower than 2.8 % due to damage on the HTL. The two-step process offered an ECE higher than 6.25 % without HTL damage through a deposition temperature lower than $88^{\circ}C$ and a short deposition time within 20 minutes in general. Therefore, the proposed two-step process is favorable to produce an Au electrode layer for the PSC device with a general thermal evaporator.

  • The aqueous two phase system has biocompatibility, because it is physically separated into an immiscible liquid multi-layer induced by incompatibility among hydrophilic components dissolved in the water phase. we have applied this principle to aqueous multi-layer liquid cosmetics and select two representative systems. What it was experimentally obtained was the phase diagrams including a binodal curve, a critical point, tie lines of concentration and tie curves of phase separating volume ratio and phase separating time. From the phase diagrams, we were able to observe existence of the optimum condition to prepare the aqueous multi-layer cosmetics for the systems.

  • Two active/passive vibration dampers were designed to control a cantilever beam first mode of vibration. The active element was a piezoelectric polymer, polyvinlidene fluoride (PVDF). The passive damping was provided by the application of a viscoelastic layer on the surface of the steel beam. Two substantially different damper configurations were designed and tested. One damper consisted of a piezoelectric actuator bonded to one face of the beam, with a viscoelastic layer applied to the other surface of the beam. The second one was composed of a layer viscoeastic layer with one surface bonded to the beam, and with other being constrained by nine piezoelectric actuators connected in parallel. A control law based on the sign of the angular velocity of the cantilever beam was implemented to control the beam first mode of vibration. The piezoelectric sensor output was digitally differentiated to obtain the transverse linear velocity, and its sign was used in the control algorith. Two dampers provided the system a damping increase of a factor of four for the first damper and three for the second damper. Both dampers were found to work well at low levels of vibration, suggesting that they can be used effectively to prevent resonant vibrations in flexible structure from initiating and building up.

  • A model experiment of purse seine by the circulating water tank was carried out on the changes of net shape and the tension of purseline under operation in two layer current. In the circular tank, the two layer current was made by cutting off the current of upper layer and producing the bottom current by the equipment shown in Fig. 1. The model experiment of purse sein was made on a reduced scale 1 :400, and the experiment was carried out according to the Tauti's model law. When the bottom current of O. 5 knot flows to lower part of three-eighths of net, following results are derived. The depth of sinkerline reached only about 80% of that of no current set. The horizontal shift of sinker line caused by the bottom current is maximized in tight set. The enclosed area by the floatIine immediately after the completion of set net is 61. 5% in tight set, 50. 0 % in loose set and 54. 1 % in lateral set of those in the case of no current. In the first half period of pursing, the tension of the purseline is enhenced by the bottom current and the pattern of increasing is irregular in the tension curves.

  • The performance of the $k-{\varepsilon}$ and $k-{\omega}$ two-equation turbulence models was investigated in computational simulations of the neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer developing above various terrain types. This was achieved by using a proposed methodology that mimics the experimental setup in the boundary layer wind tunnel and accounts for a decrease in turbulence parameters with height, as observed in the atmosphere. An important feature of this approach is pressure regulation along the computational domain that is additionally supported by the nearly constant turbulent kinetic energy to Reynolds shear stress ratio at all heights. In addition to the mean velocity and turbulent kinetic energy commonly simulated in previous relevant studies, this approach focuses on the appropriate prediction of Reynolds shear stress as well. The computational results agree very well with experimental results. In particular, the difference between the calculated and measured mean velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress profiles is less than ${\pm}10%$ in most parts of the computational domain.

  • PURPOSES: A viscoelastic axisymmetric finite element analysis code has been developed for stress analysis of asphalt pavement structures. METHODS: Generalized Maxwell Model (GMM) and 4-node isoparametric element were employed for finite element formulation. The code was developed using $C^{+}^{+}$ computer program language and named as KICTPAVE. For the verification of the developed code, a structural model of a pavement system was constructed. The structural model was composed of three layers: asphalt layer, crushed stone layer, and soil subgrade. Two types of analysis were considered for the verification: (1)elastic static analysis, (2)viscoelastic time-dependent analysis. For the elastic static analysis, linear elastic material model was assigned to all the layers, and a static load was applied to the structural model. For the viscoelastic time-dependent analysis, GMM and linear elastic material model were assigned to the asphalt layer and all the other layers respectively, and a cyclic loading condition was applied to the structural model. RESULTS: The stresses and deformations from KICTPAVE were compared with those from ABAQUS. The analysis results obtained from the two codes showed good agreement in time-dependent response of the element under the loading area as well as the surface deformation of asphalt layer, and horizontal and vertical stresses along the axisymmetric axis. CONCLUSIONS: The validity of KICTPAVE was confirmed by showing the agreement of the analysis results from the two codes.

  • In this paper, we proposed the method of the characteristic impedance and effective dielectric constant calculations of a parallel-two-wire transmission line coated with multi-layer dielectric material using conformal mapping method. First of all, we calculated the capacitance of the transmission line when coated by N layer dielectric material which has different thickness and dielectric constant and calculated the characteristic impedance and effective dielectric constant using calculated capacitances. When compared with the Maxwell 2D (made by Ansoft Corporation) simulation result calculated result was very similar to the simulation result within the four percent error range.

  • High-efficiency white organic light-emitting diodes(WOLEDs) were fabricated with two emissive layers and an blocking layer was sandwiched between two phosphorescent dopants, bis(3,5-difluoro-2-(2-pyridyl)phenyl-(2-carboxypyridyl) iridium III(FIrpic) as the blue emission and a newly synthesized red phosphorescent material guest, bis(5-acetyl-2-phenylpyridinato-N,C2') acetylacetonate($(acppy)_2Ir(acac)$). This blocking layer prevented a T-T annihilation in a red emissive layer, and balanced with blue and red emission as blocking of hole carriers. The white device showed Commission Internationale d'Eclairage($CIE_{x,y}$) coordinates of (0.317, 0.425) at 22400 $cd/m^2$, a maximum luminance of 27300 $cd/m^2$ at 268 $mA/cm^2$, a maximum luminous efficiency and power efficiency of 26.9 cd/A and 18.6 lm/W.

  • Background: Thanks to the development of the mathematical/statistical reverse engineering and the high-throughput measuring biotechnology, lots of biologically meaningful genegene interaction networks have been revealed. Steady-state analysis of these systems provides an important clue to understand and to predict the systematic behaviours of the biological system. However, modeling such a complex and large-scale system is one of the challenging difficulties in systems biology. Results: We introduce a new stochastic modeling approach that can describe gene regulatory mechanisms by dividing two (DNA and protein) layers. Simple queuing system is employed to explain the DNA layer and the protein layer is modeled using G-networks which enable us to account for the post-translational protein interactions. Our method is applied to a transcription repression system and an active protein degradation system. The steady-state results suggest that the active protein degradation system is more sensitive but the transcription repression system might be more reliable than the transcription repression system. Conclusions: Our two layer stochastic model successfully describes the long-run behaviour of gene regulatory networks which consist of various mRNA/protein processes. The analytic solution of the G-networks enables us to extend our model to a large-scale system. A more reliable modeling approach could be achieved by cooperating with a real experimental study in synthetic biology.
