A new type of precast steel reinforced concrete (PSRC) column was put forward in this paper. In order to study the static performance of PSRC column and hollow precast steel reinforced concrete (HPSRC) column subjected to combined compression and shear loading, a parametric test was carried out and effects of axial compression ratio, concrete strength and shear ratio on the mechanical behavior of composite PSRC column and HPSRC column were explored. In addition, the cracks development, load-span displacement relationship, strain distribution and shear bearing strength of column specimens were emphatically focused. Test results implied that shear failure of all specimens occurred during the test, and higher strength of cast-in-place concrete, smaller shear ratio and larger axial compression ratio could lead to greater shear resistance, but when the axial compression ratio was larger than 0.36, the shear capacity began to decrease gradually. Furthermore, truss-arch model for determining the shear strength of PSRC column and HPSRC column was proposed and the calculated results obtained from proposed method were verified to be valid.

Temporal supports is proposed for the large block construction of a double-deck truss girder of a bundle type cable-stayed bridge. The design force of the temporal bents cannot be evaluated by a conventional design procedure with gust factored static wind loads. The uplift forces in BS5400 also can not estimate the design forces of the temporal bents properly for the turbulent wind loads. A frequency-domain buffeting analysis is performed to evaluate the design forces of the temporal bents considering the interactions between the girder and temporal supports. Two cases of modeling are compared to estimate the stiffness contribution of temporal supports in determining design forces, i.e., an analysis model including temporal bents in the structural analysis modeling and an analysis model with fixed supports at the bent tops neglecting the stiffness of temporal bents. The consideration of bent stiffness usually generates smaller reaction forces than rigid support modeling. Consequently, the effectiveness and usefulness of the buffeting analysis procedure with full modeling of temporal supports are demonstrated for the design of a temporal bents of the construction of a bundle type cable-stayed bridge.

This study discusses the inelastic behavior of single-layer latticed dome, which consists of a tubular truss member and newly proposed joint sections, through a loading test on a scaled-down structure. The loading test was performed under displacement control conditions, using loading transfer system for the same value of point loads on all joints. The maximum applied load was nearly 1.6 times of the design load, and structural failure occurred after exceeding the compressive yielding in some members. Structural displacement was maintained up to the limit of the oil jack. The behavior of the latticed dome from the loading test was analyzed according to the order of loading steps.

This paper presents an algorithm for structural reliability with the response surface method. For this aim, an approach with three stages is proposed named as improved response surface method. In the algorithm, firstly, a quadratic approximate function is formed and design point is determined with First Order Reliability Method. Secondly, a point close to the exact limit state function is searched using the design point. Lastly, vector projected method is used to generate the sample points and Second Order Reliability Method is performed to obtain reliability index and probability of failure. Five numerical examples are selected to illustrate the proposed algorithm. The limit state functions of three examples (cantilever beam, highly nonlinear limit state function and dynamic response of an oscillator) are defined explicitly and the others (frame and truss structures) are defined implicitly. ANSYS finite element program is utilized to obtain the response of the structures which are needed in the reliability analysis of implicit limit state functions. The results (reliability index, probability of failure and limit state function evaluations) obtained from the improved response surface are compared with those of Monte Carlo Simulation, First Order Reliability Method, Second Order Reliability Method and Classical Response Surface Method. According to the results, proposed algorithm gives better results for both reliability index and limit state function evaluations.
Single angle or channel with thin-walled open section can be used as compression member for example as web member in truss. In this case the inevitable eccentricity due to fabrication is commonly neglected in structural design. However eccentricity effect should be considered in the member design, especially in case of compression member. The critical loads of compression members that buckle by twisting or by a combination of bending and twisting are to be determined by solving governing differential equations. In this paper, the investigations are limited to the rolled channels([), equal-leg angles(L), lipped channels(C) and the applied loads are assumed to have some eccentricities.
Two novel types of construction detailings, including using the distributive beam and the inner ring diaphragm in the joint between large-section CFT columns and outrigger truss to enhance the transferring efficiency of huge vertical load, and using the T-shaped stiffeners in the steel tube of large-section CFT columns to promote the local buckling capacity of steel tubes, were tested to investigate their working mechanism and design methods. Experimental results show that the co-working performance between steel tube and inner concrete could be significantly improved by setting the distributive beam and the inner ring diaphragm which can transfer the vertical load directly in the large-section CFT columns. Meanwhile, the T-shaped stiffeners are very helpful to improve the local bulking performance of steel tubes in the column components by the composite action of T-shaped stiffeners together with the core concrete under the range of flange of T-shaped stiffeners. These two approaches can result in a lower steel cost in comparison to normal steel reinforced concrete columns. Finally, a practical engineering case was introduced to illustrate the economy benefits achieved by using the two typical detailings.

This paper focuses on the design, fabrication, testing and analysis of a novel load-bearing element with energy dissipation capability. A single element comprises two von-Mises trusses (VMTs), which are sandwiched between two plates and connected to dashpots that stroke as the VMTs cycle between stable equilibrium states. The elements can be assembled in-plane to form a large plate-like structure or stacked with different properties in each layer for improved load-adaptability. Also introduced in the elements are pre-loaded springs (PLSs) that provide high initial stiffness and allow the element to carry a static load even when the VMTs cannot under harmonic disturbance input. Simulations of the system behavior using the Simscape environment show good overall correlation with test data. Good energy dissipation capability is observed over a frequency range from 0.1 Hz to 2 Hz. The test and simulation results show that a two layer prototype, having one soft VMT layer and one stiff VMT layer, can provide good energy dissipation over a decade of variation in harmonic load amplitude, while retaining the ability to carry static load due to the PLSs. The paper discusses how system design parameter changes affect the static load capability and the hysteresis behavior.
Staircase is a vertical transportation element commonly used in every multistoried structure. Inclined flights of staircase are usually casted monolithically with RC frame. The structural configuration of stairs generally introduces discontinuities into the typical regular reinforced concrete frame composed of beams and columns. Inclined position of flight transfers both vertical as well as horizontal forces in the frame. Under lateral loading, staircase in a multistory RC frame building develops truss action creating a local stiffening effect. In case of seismic event the stiff area around staircase attracts larger force. Therefore, special attention is required while modeling and analyzing the building with staircase. However, in general design practice, designers usually ignore the staircase while modeling either due to ignorance or to avoid complexity. A numerical study has been conducted to examine the effect of ignoring staircase in modeling and design of RC frame buildings while they are really present in structure, may be at different locations. Linear dynamic analysis is performed on nine separate building models to evaluate influence of staircase on dynamic characteristics of building, followed by nonlinear static analysis on the same models to access their seismic performance. It is observed that effect of ignoring staircase in modeling is severe and leads to unsafe structure. Effect of location and orientation of staircase is also important in determining seismic performance of RC frame buildings.
Shear lag effect can be an important phenomenon to consider in design of the steel-concrete composite beams. Researchers have found that the effect can be strongly related with the moment distribution, the stiffness and the ductility of the composite beams. For continuous composite beams expected to sustain hogging moment, the shear lag effect can be more distinct as cracking of the concrete slab reduces its shear stiffness. Despite its influences on behaviour of the steel-concrete composite beams, a method for calculating the shear lag effect in steel-concrete composite beams sustaining hogging moment is still not available. Shear lag effect in steel-concrete composite beams sustaining hogging moment is investigated in this paper. A method was proposed specifically for predicting the effect in the cracked part of the steel-concrete composite beam. The method is validated against available experimental data. At last, FE studies are conducted for steel-concrete composite beams with different design parameters, loading conditions and boundary conditions to further investigate the shear lag effect and compare with the proposed method.
Steel-concrete-steel composite structures with bidirectional webs (SCSBWs) are used in large-scale projects and exhibit good mechanical performances and constructional efficiency. The shear behaviors of SCSBW deep beam members in key joints or in locations subjected to concentrated forces are of concern in design. To address this issue, experimental program is investigated to examine the deep-beam shear behaviors of SCSBWs, in which the cracking process and force transfer mechanism are revealed. Compared with the previously proposed truss model, it is found that a strut-and-tie model is more suitable for describing the shear mechanism of SCSBW deep beams with a short span and sparse transverse webs. According to the experimental analyses, a new model is proposed to predict the shear capacities of SCSBW deep beams. This model uses strut-and-tie concept and introduces web shear and dowel action to consider the coupled multi mechanisms. A stress decomposition method is used to distinguish the contributions of different shear-transferring paths. Based on case studies, a simplified model is further developed, and the explicit solution is derived for design efficiency. The proposed models are verified using experimental data, which are proven to have good accuracy and efficiency and to be suitable for practical application.
