Purpose: The study is to discover the relationship between malocclusion, which is known to cause temporomandibular disorder, and temporomandibular disorder and is aimed at college students who have retained their natural teeth. Methods: The study was aimed at 500 college students at two colleges located in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Daegu metropolitan city and survey research was conducted in order to discover any relationship between malocclusion and temporomandibular disorder. After excluding copies with insincere answers or errors out of the 500 copies of the questionnaire, the study used a total of 435 copies (87%) for research and analysis. Results: Females showed a prevalence of temporomandibular joint clicking and temporomandibular joint pain, and students who had crowding showed a high prevalence of temporomandibular joint pain, temporomandibular joint clicking, and trismus. Students whose occlusal condition was not good demonstrated a high prevalence of temporomandibular joint pain, temporomandibular joint clicking, and trismus. Students who had maxillary protrusion showed a prevalence of temporomandibular joint clicking and trimus, whereas students who had mandibular protrusion showed a high prevalence of temporomandibular joint clicking. Conclusion: Students whose dental condition was crowding and students whose occlusal condition was not good exhibited a high prevalence of three types of symptoms of temporomandibular disorder. Meanwhile student who had maxillary protrusion showed a high prevalence of temporomandibular joint clicking and trismus, while students who had mandibular protrusion showed a prevalence of temporomandibular joint clicking.

Background : The surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molar can result in considerable pain, swelling, and dysfunction that patient are incapable of work for several days. Factors contributing to post operative swelling, trismus and pain are complex. There is no question but that the procedure of surgically removing an impacted mandibular third molar is inherently a traumatic one and that some sequelae related to the inflammation response are expected. Meticulous surgical technique will minimize the sequelae of inflammation but will not prevent them. In an effort to minimize these sequelae the use of steroid was instituted. Patients and Methods : Present study was to investigate the effect of one preoperative steroid injection in the masseter muscle to the patients(male 9, female 11) who needed prophylactic removal of bilateral, symmetrical, impacted wisdom teeth in the mandible on the complaint like swelling, trismus and pain. through Double-Blind test. Results : 1. After 24 hours investigation, preoperative steroid injection had significantly reduced swelling with 39% and trismus with 57.5%. 2. $7^{th}$ post operative day investigation, reduced swelling and trismus had shown, however, not significant. 3. There wasn't major difference from the group who took preve-ntive steroid in the visual analogue scale, the first analgesic intake time and the pain period. 4. There wasn't any adverse reaction of steroid for 20 patient From the above result, If the patients are not contraindication to steroid and pronounced post operative reaction can be expected the use of steroid to the surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molar is recommended.

Objective To compare the effects of low intensity ultrasound (LIUS), traditional exercise therapy (TET), low level laser therapy (LLLT) and TET on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and trismus following recovery from head and neck cancer (HNC). Methods Sixty participants following, who had experienced HNC, were randomly allocated to three groups of 20 people each. Each group received different therapy. Group A received LIUS and TET; group B received LLLT and TET; while group C received TET. All 60 participants were evaluated under the visual analog scale (VAS), the University of Washington Quality of Life questionnaire (UW-QOL) and the Vernier caliper scale (VCS) at the beginning of the therapies and after 4 weeks. Results ANOVA test revealed significant improvements across all three groups with outcomes of p<0.05. The results of the UW-QOL questionnaire showed a significant difference between groups A, B and C in favor of group A (p<0.05). The VAS results showed a more improvement in group A as compared to group B (p<0.05), while there was no statistical difference between groups B and C (p>0.05). The VCS results showed more improvement for the individuals in group B as compared to those in group C (p<0.05), while there was minimal difference between groups A and B (p>0.05). Conclusion The LIUS and TET are more effective than LLLT and/or TET in reducing TMJ pain and trismus following HNC.
Background: Impacted mandibular third molar removal is one of the most commonly performed oral surgical procedures. This procedure can lead to several postoperative complications, such as trismus, facial swelling, and pain, which occur as a result of the inflammatory responses to surgery. This study compared the efficiency of preoperative injections of 4 mg versus 8 mg dexamethasone into the pterygomandibular space to reduce postoperative sequelae. Methods: This was a randomized, prospective, split-mouth, controlled study, including 52 mandibular third molar surgeries in 26 patients. Each patient was randomized to either the 4 mg or 8 mg dexamethasone injection group. Dexamethasone was injected into the pterygomandibular space after numbness from local anesthesia. Data were collected for trismus, facial swelling, visual analog scale (VAS) pain score, and the number of analgesics taken during the evaluation period. The level of significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: Statistically significant differences in postoperative facial swelling (P = 0.031, diff = 1.4 mm) and pain (P = 0.012, diff = 0.020) were found between the 8 mg and 4 mg dexamethasone groups. However, there were no significant differences between the groups for trismus and the total number of analgesics consumed (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Compared to the 4 mg preoperative dexamethasone injection, the 8 mg preoperative dexamethasone injection into the pterygomandibular space was more effective in reducing postoperative swelling and pain following the surgical removal of the impacted mandibular third molar. However, the difference in trismus could not be evaluated clinically. Therefore, the recommendation of administering the 4 mg dexamethasone preoperative injection is optimal in the third molar surgical procedure.
Background: Pain, edema, and trismus are predictable sequelae for surgical extraction of impacted mandibular third molars (M3M). The present study aimed to compare the anti-phlogistic potential of bromelain and aceclofenac in the reduction of post-surgical sequalae in the extraction of impacted M3M. Method: A randomized controlled, triple-blinded clinical study included 72 patients scheduled for surgical removal of impacted M3M under local anesthesia. Randomization was performed and subjects were equally allocated to groups A (control) and B (study), who intended to receive aceclofenac and bromelain, respectively. The primary outcome variables were pain, edema, and trismus evaluated on postoperative days 2 and 7 and compared with baseline values. The secondary variables evaluated were the quantity of rescue analgesics required and the frequency of adverse effects in both groups for 7 postoperative (PO) days. Data were analyzed with a level of significance of P < 0.05. Results: Group B demonstrated a significant decrease in the severity of edema and trismus compared to group A on both PO days 2 and 7 (P < 0.001). Bromelain demonstrated similar analgesic efficacy with an insignificant difference compared to aceclofenac (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The present study showed that the efficacy of bromelain was comparable to that of aceclofenac in reducing inflammatory complications following surgical removal of impacted M3M. Bromelain can be considered a safe and potent alternative to routinely used aceclofenac when addressing inflammatory outcomes after surgery.
Purpose: This study is intended to survey male and female university students to see if there is correlation between temporomandibular disorder and oral habits known to cause temporomandibular disorder. Methods: A survey was conducted to 400 male and female university students attending two universities located in Daegu Metropolitan City and Gyeongsangbuk-do to examine if there is correlation between oral habits and temporomandibular disorder. Among total 400 questionnaire sheets, 334 (83.5%) sheets were used for final analysis except for those unreliably answered or containing error. Results: Female students showed a higher prevalence rate of temporomandibular joint pain than male students, and those having the habit of resting jaw on hand indicated a higher prevalence rate of temporomandibular joint pain, temporomandibular joint clicking, or trismus than normal students not having it. Also, those having the habit of tooth clenching showed a significantly higher prevalence rate of temporomandibular joint pain or temporomandibular joint clicking than normal students not having it. Conclusion: It can be concluded that the habit of resting jaw on hand is closely related with temporomandibular disorder like temporomandibular joint pain, temporomandibular joint clicking, or trismus, and the habit of tooth clenching is significantly correlated with such symptoms as temporomandibular joint pain and temporomandibular joint clicking.
Purpose: This study aims to examine correlation between temporomandibular disorder and oral habits that have been known to cause temporomandibular disorder with both male and female undergraduates. Methods: To figure out correlation between temporomandibular disorder and oral habits, a survey was conducted to 500 students of two universities located in Daegu Metropolitan City and Gyeongsangbuk-do, and excluding the ones unreliably answered or indicating errors, total 427 (85.4%) out of 500 questionnaire sheets were used for final analysis. Results: Female students showed higher prevalence rates than male students in temporomandibular joint pain and temporomandibular joint clicking, and students having the lip biting habit, tongue thrust habit, or bruxism habit indicated a higher prevalence rate of temporomandibular joint pain than normal students. Also, students having the tongue thrust habit indicated a significantly higher prevalence rate of temporomandibular joint clicking than normal students not having it. And about trismus, students having the bruxism habit showed a significantly higher prevalence rate than normal students not having it. Conclusion: The findings imply that oral habits like lip biting, tongue thrust, or bruxism are closely related with temporomandibular joint pain, tongue thrust influences temporomandibular joint clicking, and bruxism does affect trismus.
Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a premalignant condition characterized by juxtaepithelial fibrosis of the oral cavity. The clinical manifestations include burning sensation to spicy food, blanched oral mucosa with palpable fibrous bands, trismus, depapillation of tongue, and dry mouth. As OSF is predominantly seen in people of the Indian subcontinent, cases of this disease have been rarely reported in South Korea. We present a case of OSF in a Sri Lankan man living in South Korea and emphasize the importance of enhancing knowledge of this disease while the number of immigrants is increasing.

In this report, we describe the incidental finding of an oropharyngeal mass in a patient who presented with a chief complaint of temporomandibular pain. The patient was initially evaluated by an otorhinolaryngologist for complaints of headaches, earache, and sinus congestion. Due to worsening headaches and trismus, he was further referred for the management of temporomandibular disorder. The clinical evaluation was uneventful except for limited mouth opening (trismus). An advanced radiological evaluation using magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass in the nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal region. The mass occupied the masticatory space and extended superioinferiorly from the skull base to the mandible. A diagnostic biopsy of the lesion revealed a longstanding human papilloma virus (HPV16)positive squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx. This case illustrates the need for the timely radiological evaluation of seemingly innocuous orofacial pain.
