  • Corbels are short cantilevers that project from the faces of a column and are a type of stress disturbed member, resisting both the ultimate shear force applied to them by the beam, and the ultimate horizontal force caused by shrinkage, temperature changes, and creep of the supported elements. Recently, as there have been an increase in the use of high-strength concrete and the concern about corrosion problems, lots of researches about hybrid reinforcing technique, applying strategically high performance reinforcements to the concrete elements, are performed. In this study, fiber reinforced high strength concrete corbels were constructed and tested for applying hybrid reinforcing technique to the corbels using steel fibers and headed bars. The results showed that the performance in terms of load carrying capacities, stiffness, ductility, and crack width was improved, as the steel fibers were added and the percentage of steel fibers was increased. In addition, the corbel specimens used headed bars as main tension ties showed superior load carrying capacities, stiffness, and ductility to the corbel specimens anchored main tension ties by welding to the transverse bars.

  • LMTT (Linear Motor-based Transfer Techn-ology) is a horizontal transfer system for the yard automation, which has been proposed to take the place of AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) in the maritime container terminal. The system is based on PLMSL (Permanent Magnetic Linear Synchronous Motor) that consists of stator modules on the rail and shuttle car. It is desirable to reduce the weight of LMTT in order to control the electronic devices with minimum energy. In this research, the DACE modeling, known as the one of Kriging interpolation, is introduced to obtain the surrogate approximation model of the structural responses. Then, the GRG(Generalized Reduced Gradient) method built in Excel is adopted to determine the optimum. The objective function is set up as weight. On the contrary, the design variables are considered as transverse, longitudinal and wheel beam's thicknesses, and the constraints are the maximum stresses generated by four loading conditions.

  • The purpose of the present study is to analyze the response of Gas Utility subjected to Earthquake and to discuss the failure prediction of Kogas Storage Tank. Initially here, characteristics of Earthquake are reviewed and then earthquake-resistance Design is investigated based on previous earthquake hazard cases. Next, considering the distribution of the transverse permanent ground displacement and equivalent spring constant effect, formulae obtained by a beam theory are established to analyze PeungTak Center Control Room. This analysis was performed without consideration of axial effects. So the finite element analysis was used in order to consider the axial stiffness of Structure.

  • In order to present the geometrically nonlinear F.E. formulation of space frames, two beam/column elements including the effects of transverse shear deformation and bending stretching coupling are developed. In the case of the first element (Finite segment method), the tangent stiffness matrices are derived by directly integrating the equilibrium equations, whereas in the case of the second element (Finite element method) elastic and geometric stiffness matrices are calculated by using the hermitian polynomials including shear deformation effect as the shape function. Both elements possess the usual twelve degrees of freedom. Also, the bowing function including shear deformation effects is obtained in order to account for the effect of shortening of member chord length due to the bending and torsional behavior. Numerical results are presented for the selected test problems which demonstrate that both elements represent reliable and highly accurate tools.

  • Microstructural morphology and bending strengths of moulded composites of thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer(LCP) and polyamide 6 (PA6) have been studied as a function of epoxy fraction. Injection-moulding of a composite plaque at a temperature below the melting point of the LCP fibrils generated a multi-layered structure: the surface skin layer with thickness of $65\;-\;120{\mu\textrm{m}}$ exhibiting a transverse orientation; the sub-skin layer with an orientation in the flow direction; the core layer with arc-curved flow patterns. The plaques containing epoxy 4.8vol% exhibited superior bending strength and large fracture strain. With an increase of epoxy fraction equal to and beyond 4.8vol%, geometry of LCP domains was changed from fibrillar shape to lamella-like one, which caused a shear-mode fracture. An analysis of the bending strength of the composite plaques by using a symmetric layered model beam suggested that addition of epoxy component altered not only the microstructural geometry but also the elastic moduli and strengths of the respective layers.

  • As few multi-tower single-box multi-cell cable-stayed bridges with corrugated steel webs have been built, analysis is mostly achieved by combining single-girder model, beam grillage model and solid model in support of the design. However, such analysis methods usually suffer from major limitations in terms of the engineering applications: single-girder model fails to account for spatial effect such as shear lag effect of the box girder and the relevant effective girder width and eccentric load coefficient; owing to the approximation in the principle equivalence, the plane grillage model cannot accurately capture shear stress distribution and local stress state in both top and bottom flange of composite box girder; and solid model is difficult to be practically combined with the overall calculation. The usual effective width method fails to provide a uniform and accurate "effective length" (and the codes fail to provide a unified design approach at those circumstance) considering different shear lag effects resulting from dead load, prestress and cable tension in the construction. Therefore, a novel spatial grid model has been developed to account for shear lag effect. The theoretical principle of the proposed spatial grid model has been elaborated along with the relevant illustrations of modeling parameters of composite box girder with corrugated steel webs. Then typical transverse and longitudinal shear lag coefficient distribution pattern at the side-span and mid-span key cross sections have been analyzed and summarized to provide reference for similar bridges. The effectiveness and accuracy of spatial grid analysis methods has been finally validated through a practical cable-stayed bridge.

  • Longitudinally structural cracks are sometimes observed in the pavement on steel plate deck bridges because traffic truck loadings can cause large local deformations of the thin deck plate stiffened by longitudinal and transverse beams. In this study, an improved finite strip method using flat-shell strip, prism, and link elements is presented to investigate local deformations of steel decks with pavements in which flexural and torsional stiffness effects of thin floor beams are rigorously taken into account. A simplified deck model extracted from steel plate-girder bridges is analyzed using the developed FSM and the commercial FE program, ABAQUS and also, their numerical results are compared and discussed.

  • Giant magnetoresistance (GMR), tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), and magnetic random-access memory (MRAM) are currently active areas of research. Magnetite, Fe3O4, is predicted to possess as half-metallic nature, ~100% spin polarization (P), and has a high Curie temperature (TC~850 K). On the other hand, Spinel ferrite CoFe2O4 has been widely studies for various applications such as magnetorestrictive sensors, microwave devices, biomolecular drug delivery, and electronic devices, due to its large magnetocrystalline anisotropy, chemical stability, and unique nonlinear spin-wave properties. Here we have investigated the magneto-transport properties of epitaxial CoxFe3-xO4 thin films. The epitaxial CoxFe3-xO4 (x=0; 0.4; 0.6; 1) thin films were successfully grown on MgO (100) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The quality of the films during growth was monitored by reflection high electron energy diffraction (RHEED). From temperature dependent resistivity measurement, we observed that the Werwey transition (1st order metal-insulator transition) temperature increased with increasing x and the resistivity of film also increased with the increasing x up to $1.6{\Omega}-cm$ for x=1. The magnetoresistance (MR) was measured with magnetic field applied perpendicular to film. A negative transverse MR was disappeared with x=0.6 and 1. Anomalous Hall data will be discussed.

  • Due to the electrical properties such as narrow bandgap and high carrier mobility, indium antimonide (InSb) has attracted a lot of attention recently. For the fabrication of electronic or photonic devices, an etching process is required. However, during etching process, enegetic ions can induce structural damages on the bombarded surface. Especially, InSb has a very weak binding energy between In atom and Sb stom, it can be easily damaged by impingement of ions. In the previous work, to evaluate the surface properties after Ar ion beam etching, the plasma-induced structural damage on the etched InSb(100) surface had been examined by resonant Raman spectroscopy. As a result, we demonstrated the relation between the enhanced transverse optical(TO) peak in the Raman spectrum and the ion-induced structral damage near the InSb surface. In this work, the annealing effect on the etched InSb(100) surface has investigated. Annealing process was performed at $450^{\circ}C$ for 10 minute under antimony ambient. As-etched InSb(100) surface had shown a strongly enhanced TO scattering intensity in the Raman spectrum. However, the annealing process with antimony flowing caused the intensity to recover due to the structural reordering and the reduction of antimony vacancies. It proves that the origin of enhanced TO scattering is Sb vacancies. Furthermore, it shows that etching-induced damage can be cured effectively by the following annealing process under Sb ambient.

  • KCI 2012 and ACI318-11 contains development length provisions for the use of headed deformed bars in tension and does not allow their tension lap splices. In ACI318-11, the confinement factor, such as transverse reinforcement factor, is not used to calculate the development length of headed bars. The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate the effect of confinement details to the lap splice performance of headed deformed reinforcing bars in grade SD400 and SD500. The confinement details are stirrups and tie-down bars in lap zone. Test results showed that specimens with only stirrups had the brittle failure and could not increase lap strengths, and that specimens with composite confinements by stirrups and tie-down bars had the flexural strengths over than nominal flexural strengths. Stirrups with tie-down bars can have an effect on improvement in lap splice of headed bars in grade SD400 and SD500.
