This paper presents cross-layer based packet scheduling and routing algorithm to effectively transmit delay-sensitive multimedia data over mobile ad hoc network. At first, packet urgency, node urgency, and route urgency are defined based on the end-to-end delay requirement of each packet and the number of hops over a route. Based on the urgency metric, the proposed transmission scheme is that packet scheduling algorithm at the MAC layer and routing algorithm at the network layer are tightly-coupled to improve the transmission performance for delay-sensitive multimedia. Finally, simulation results are provided to show the performance of proposed transmission scheme.
When a wide area blackout occurres, reenergizing transmission lines should be done at first. The KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation) divides whole power system grid into seven subsystem, and each subsystem has one of two blackstart power plants which are usually hydro or combined-combustion type, one priority power plant which should be first supplied with electric energy, and transmission lines between them. Voltage rising, line charging, and operation stability problem should be considered when these lines are reenergized. In this paper, building-up process for primary transmission system that should be energized at first is analyzed.
According to the development of ubiquitous technologies, sensor networks is used in various area. In particular, medical field is one of the significant application areas using sensor networks, and recently it has come to be more important according to standardization of the body sensor networks technology. There are special characteristics of their own for medical sensor networks, which are different from the one of sensor networks for general application or environment. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical medical sensor networks structure considering own properties of medical applications, and also introduce transmission mechanism based on hierarchical structure. Our mechanism uses the priority and threshold value for medical sensor nodes considering patient's needs and health condition. Through this way Cluster head can transmit emergency data to the Base station rapidly. We also present the new key establishment mechanism based on key management mechanism which is proposed by L. Eschenauer and V. Gligor for our proposed structure and transmission mechanism. We use key provisioning for emergency nodes that have high priority based on patients' health condition. This mechanism guarantees the emergency nodes to establish the key and transmit the urgent message to the new cluster head more rapidly through preparing key establishment with key provisioning. We analyze the efficiency of our mechanism through comparing the amount of traffic and energy consumption with analysis and simulation with QualNet simulator. We also implemented our key management mechanism on TmoteSKY sensor board using TinyOS 2.0 and through this experiments we proved that the new mechanism could be actually utilized in network design.

In this paper, a new hierarchical image segmentation algorithm based on human visual system(HVS) characteristic is proposed which can efficiently reduce and control transmission information quantity without the degradation of the subjective and objective image quality. It consists of image segmentation based on mathematical morphology and region merging considering HVS characteristic for the pairs of two adjacent regions at each level of the hierarchy. Image segmentation is composed of 3-level hierarchical structure. In the region merging structure of each level, we extract the pairs of two adjacent regions which human vision can't discriminate, and then merge them. The proposed region merging method extracts pairs of two neighbor regions to be merged and performs region merging according to merging priority based on HVS characteristics. The merging priority for each adjacent pair is determined by the proposed merging priority function(MPF). First of all, the highest priority pair is merged. The information control factor is used to regulate the transmission information at each level. The proposed segmentation algorithm can efficiently improve bottleneck problem caused by excessive contour information at region-based very low bit rate coding. And it shows that it is more flexible structure than that of conventional method. In experimental results, though PSNR and the subjective image quality by the proposed algorithm is similar to that of conventional method, the contour information quantity to be transmitted is reduced considerably. Therefore it is an efficient image segmentation algorithm for region-based very low bit rate coding.

Hierarchical modulation has been considered for achieving higher data rates in Terrestrial-DMB(T-DMB) systems. And for achieving a higher data rates transmission, the low-priority (LP) data, which is used to carry additional data, such as video data, audio data and textual data, should be perfectly decoded in a certain value of $E_b/N_o$. Unfortunately, the man-made noise badly affects the high-priority (HP) symbol, which is used to carry the conventional data in the existed T-DMB system; and since the advanced T-DMB system is proposed to fit for the legacy T-DMB receivers, the low-priority symbols in the hierarchical modulation are much worse affected by the neighbors, who are both in the same quadrant. Because of the feature that mentioned previously, the turbo code has been considered to deal with the LP data. And due to the degradation which caused by the shortened symbol distance, the error performance of LP data is not sufficient by only using the turbo code. In this paper, we propose a Reed-Solomon code used outside of turbo code, and with the turbo code, it becomes a concatenated code. In this paper, there are some simulation results, within the comparison of those performances, we can see how a Reed-Solomon code is utilized for degradation of error performance which is caused by the hierarchical constellation, and how to design a Reed-Solomon code which is suitable for improving the degradation of error performance.
VG-AnyLAN is a local area network standard developed by the IEEE 802.12 project. While preserving the frame format of IEEE 802.3, VG-AnyLAN adopts a new medium access control called Demand Priority where transmission requests of stations are arbitrated by a control hub in a round-robin manner. Unlike CSMA/CD which is the medium access control of IEEE 802.3, the Demand Priority, while providing the maximum bound on the packet delay, does not put the limit on the network segment size. In this paper, we analyze the delay and the channel utilization performances of the medium access control of IEEE 802.12 VG-AnyLAN. We develope an analytic model of the system under assumptions that each station generates traffic of the equal priority and that the packets are of fixed length. Using the analytic model, we obtain the recursive expression of the average channel utilization and the average access delay The numerical results obtained via analysis are compared to the simulation results of the system for a partial validation of our analysis.

The Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) function of IEEE 802.11e standard defines contention window (CW) for different Access Category (AC) limits to support Quality-of-Service (QoS). However, it have been remained the problem that the collision probability of transmission is increasing in congested network. Several different solutions have been proposed but the collision occurs among same priority queue within the same station to compete the channel access. This paper presents an APCA (Advanced Priority Collision Avoidance) algorithm for EDCA that increases the throughput in saturated situation. The proposed algorithm use reserved field's bits of FC(Frame Control) using IEEE 802.11e standard's RTS/CTS (Request to Send / Clear to Send) mechanism to avoid data collision. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm improves the performance of EDCA in packet loss. Using Jain's fairness index formula, we also prove that the proposed APCA algorithm achieves the better fairness than EDCA method under network congested condition.
This paper proposed a collision avoidance scheme to improve the network performance and priority control scheme to support real-time ATM applications in CIF(Cells in Frames), which carries ATM cells over existing Ethernet interfaces. The proposed scheme has optimized for the two nodes Ethernet, that is a typical CIF network, and doesn't require any hardware modification of existing Ethernet interface card. The collision avoidance scheme gives fair access opprtunities with minimized contention to the nodes by assigning different inter-frame gap to each element of CIF network. The priority control scheme guarantees preemptive transmission of real-time frames to the medium by exchanging queuing status information between two nodes. Therefore in this paper it is shown that CIF network which has both the collision avoidance scheme of MAC layer and the priority control scheme of CIF layer has a improved network performance and supports real-time ATM applications efficiently.

In this paper, we present a new routing protocol, multipath and multi-priority based routing protocol, (MMRP) for wireless multimedia sensor networks. The proposed MMRP chooses the multiple routing paths from source to the sink, then the selected paths are assigned with different priority levels depending upon the residual energy and transmission delay in the routing paths. That is, the highly prioritized I frames of the MPEG video are transmitted over the high priority routing paths, and other P and B frames are transmitted over the lower priority routing paths. The proposed MMRP protocol can be applied to time critical applications which require both lower latency and low power consumption over wireless multimedia sensor network. Simulations results of MMRP protocol show respectively an improvement of 23.48% and 23.11% in energy conservation and 81.6% and 32.01% improvement in latency as compared to protocols without and with multipath routing.

As Internet of things with a large number of nodes emerges, wireless-power communication networks (WPCN) based on a random access protocol needs to be investigated. In the random access-based WPCN, a terminal accessing later in given random access (RA) slots can harvest more energy before transmission and thus can transmit data with higher power and achieve higher throughput if the access is successful. On the basis of this property, the proposed random access control protocol gives the terminals priority and distinguishes the RA slots according to the priority level, so that a near terminal with access point allows to access preferentially other than a remote terminal. This operation decreases the throughput of near terminal and increases the throughput of remote terminal, and then, the doubly near-far problem in WPCN is resolved and the user fairness is improved. Results show that the proposed random access control improves both channel throughput and user fairness according to the priority level.
