  • In order to attenuate structural waves in railway track, damped mass-spring absorber system and spring supported system are considered that are attached continuously along the beam length. A mathematical model is presented for the propagation of structural waves on a finitely long, periodically supported classical beam. The model in this paper could represent a railway track where the beam represents the rail and an appropriately chosen support type represents the pad/sleeper/ballast system of a railway track. And in this study, it is presented that the measurement method of health monitoring of railway track.

  • The composite framed structures, consisting of RC columns and steel beams more popular in korea because of their efficiency and quality. However the force transfer mechanisms between the column and beam may by very complicated since the materials of columns and beams are different. This study develops "the column penetration joint" which the web of steel beam doesn't penetrate and which could improve the strength, deformation, and energy dissipation capacities compared to existing composite joints. It is the concrete-filled square tube joint with the exterior diaphragms and the cruciform stiffening plates. This study evaluated the strength of RC column penetration to steel beam connection by analyzing the results of partial experiments, and reviewed the applicability the strength formula through the comparison of tested results of joint experiment.

  • The non-linear responses of a slender rectangular cantilever beam subjected to lateral harmonic base-excitation are investigated by the 2-channel FFT analyzer. Both linear and nonlinear behaviors of the cantilever beam are compared with each other. Bending mode, torsional mode, and transverse mode are coupled in such a way that the energy transfer between them are observed. Especially, superharmonic, subharmonic, and chaotic motions which result from the unstable inertia terms in the transverse mode are analyzed by the FFT analyzer The aim is to give the explanations of the route to chaos, i.e., harmonic motion \longrightarrow superharmonic motion \longrightarrow subharmonic motion \longrightarrow chaos.

  • It is discussed how to route yard-side equipment during the loading operation in port container terminals. The number of containers to be picked up at each yard-bay, as well as the route of a yard-side equipment (for example, transfer crane or straddle carrier) in a yard, are determined. The objective of the problem is to minimize the total container handling time in the yard. An encoding method to represent nodes in the search space is introduced utilizing inherent properties of the optimal solution by which the search space is greatly reduced. A beam search algorithm is suggested. A numerical experiment is carried out to compared the performance of the beam search algorithm with those of other approaches.

  • This paper presents the control and the performances of a $H_2$ controller for active vibration control of a cantilever beam. Electromagnets are used as actuators and a laser sensor is used to measure the position of the bending beam. The transfer function of the beam is obtained via the modal analysis of the free vitiation equation. The performance of the controller are verified by experimental results.

  • In this paper, an experiment for the active vibration control of a cantilever beam uses electromagnet as an actuator and uses a laser sensor to measure the position of the bending beam, constituting a non-contacting control system. A mathematical model of the overall system is derived to analytically design an appropriate controller. Dynamic equations of the electromagnetic actuator and the beam are combined to find the transfer function from the actuator to the sensor. The effectiveness of the obtained model is verified by various experiments and an improper PID controller is designed based on the obtained model. According to analysis, the coefficient of the derivative controller is the most important parameter for handling the performance and the stability margin of the control system. The experimental results of the active control system are compared with those of the open loop system.

  • In order to improve the constructability and meanwhile ensure excellent seismic behavior, several innovative composite connection details were conceived and studied by the authors. This paper reports experimental results and observations on seismic behavior of steel beam bolted to reinforced concrete column connections (bolted RCS or BRCS). The proposed composite connection details involve post tensioning the end plates of the steel beams to the reinforced concrete or precast concrete columns using high-strength steel rods. A rational design procedure was proposed to assure a ductile behavior of the composite structure. Strut-and-tie model analysis indicates that a bolted composite connection has a favorable stress transfer mechanism. The excellent capacity and behavior were then validated through five full-scale beam to column connection model tests.

  • No specific guidelines are for computing the shear strength of steel coupling beam connections embedded in the reinforced concrete shear wall. In this paper, a theoretical study of the strength of hybrid coupled shear wall connections is achieved. The bearing stress at failure in the concrete below the steel coupling beam section is related to the concrete compressive strength and the ratio of the width of the steel coupling beam section to the thickness of the hybrid coupled shear wall. To revise factor affecting shear transfer strength across connections between coupled shear walls and steel coupling beam, experimental studies are achieved. The main test variables were auxiliary details of stud bolts. In this studies, these proposed equations are shown to be in good agreement with the test results reported in the paper and with other test data in the literature.

  • This paper presents the active vibration control of flexible cantilever beam using piezoceramic actuators. The transfer function from the force input to the bending displacement was obtained via modal analysis results and piezoelectric constitutive equations. For the active vibration control piezoceramic actuators and sensors were used to construct a flexible smart cantilever beam. To further enhance the sensing and actuation properties of the piezoceramics, a typical interdigitated electrode pattern was fabricated. The PID controller was designed via various simulation and experiment trials. It was shown that the PID controller could suppress vibration of the beam effectively. Simulations and experiments verified good performances of the designed controller.

  • The goal of this paper is to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of concrete-filled tubular column to H-beam connections with external T-stiffener through the finite element method and to offer basic data for the design of T-stiffener. To identify the problems of previous test results, the same shapes of the full-scale test specimens were modeled for the finite element analysis. Results of the analysis were compared with the test results. Several stress and strain indices were used to understand the stress-transfer mechanism of connection with various T-stiffeners parameters. The models of analysis with different T-stiffener are grouped into TS, TSD, and TSH series. An alternative plan that decreases the stress concentration of beam flange to horizontal stiffener connection is proposed through the elasto-plastic finite element method. The basic design idea and minimum sizes of T-stiffener were proposed based on the various indices in relation to the connection details.
