  • Implantable middle ear hearing devices(IMEHDs) have being actively studied to overcome the problems of conventional hearing aids. Vibration transducer, an output devices of IMEHDs, is attached on the ossicular chain and transmits mechanical vibration to cochlea. This approach allows us to hear more clear sound because mechanical vibration is effective to transfer high frequency acoustics, but occurs some problems such as fatigue accumulation to ossicular chian and reduction of vibration displacement caused by mass loading effect. Recently, many studies for the round window stimulation are announced, because it does not cause such problems. It have been studied by older transducers designed for attaching on ossicular chain. In this paper, we proposed a new electromagnetic transducer which consists of two magnets, three coils and a vibration membrane. The magnet assembly, magnet coupled in opposite direction, were placed in the center of three coils, and the optimum length of each coil generating maximum vibrational force was calculated by finite element analysis(FEA). The transducer was implemented as the calculated length of each coil, and measured vibration displacement. From the results, it is verified the vibration displacement can be improved by optimizing the length of coils.

  • Tissue stimulation technique using ultrasound has been continuously studied and developed. Recently, as a increment of interests for obesity treatment and cosmetic care, a various studies on ultrasonic fat emulsification has been conducted. In this study, the fat emulsification adapted ultrasonic transducer was designed. And using designed transducer, the simulation for the shape of focal area and thermal degradation region was conducted. The dimensions were verified by the simulation results. And the effectiveness was confirmed by evaluating measured radiation characteristic and heating characteristic. In addition, we estimated the ultrasonic heating characteristics in composite structure medium. The shape of focal point and heating characteristic of the proposed transducer were determined to be sufficient to emulsify the fat. The results of this study are considered to be used as basic research in more efficient and safe ultrasonic fat removal.

  • The cymbal transducer is a miniaturized version of the Class V flextensional transducer. It has low resonant frequency and high output pressure characteristics compared with its size. However, since it has high quality factor and low energy conversion efficiency as well, it is often used as an array rather than single. When used as an array, a big change in the frequency characteristics occurs in comparison with that of the single transducer due to the interaction between constituent transducers. In this study, we designed a pattern of cymbal array with a view to having broadband characteristics. Three transducers having different center frequencies were designed first. The designed cymbal transducers were used to construct all possible patterns of a 3 × 3 planar array. After analyzing frequency characteristics of these patterns, based on the results, we derived the most effective pattern to achieve a higher fractional bandwidth. The derived array pattern showed an improvement of the fractional bandwidth by 24.9 % in comparison with the reference model.

  • We propose rectangular type spiral coils with folded comers for the applications to low frequency guided wave magnetostrictive transducers and describe a method for making the proposed coils from insulated electrical wire such as enameled copper wire. Expressions for the electrical properties of the coils are also presented and compared with experimental measurements. An overlapped-2-channel folded-comer spiral-coil array is fabricated and applied to a magnetostrictive strip transducer generating and detecting fundamental torsional mode guided waves. From the results we conclude that the design and fabrication method make it possible to use the magnetostrictive transducers optimized for various guided wave applications and also will greatly help engineers gain easy access to the optimized transducers.

  • The cutting performance of a machine depends on the ability of the design of the acoustic horn to facilitate an increase in tool-tip vibration, allowing a significant amount of material to be removed. In this paper, three kinds of acoustic horns were designed and FEM was used to estimate displacement magnifications of horn tips. An optimization procedure for the profile has been followed to obtain maximum magnification, for higher rate of material removal and safe working stresses for the horn material.

  • Because, Piezo-electric transducer(PZT) transform electric energy into mechanical energy, it is a adequate material for positioning control and force control, take excellent properties as actuator with high speed and high performance. Recently, researches of ultra precision positioning using this PZT are advanced in. In this paper, we use a actuator of PZT, design a positioning apparatus with ultra precision position apparatus as hinge structure. Because of this purpose, before, we were confirmed in control properties of ultra precision stage by FEM method.

  • In this study, we have tried to find the optimized design variables of the matching layer which is important part of thickness mode ultrasonic transducer and finally reach the conclusion that the electrical property of piezo-element must be under consideration when the optimized acoustic impedance is estimated. Proper expression of the effective impedance of front load at free resonant frequency(: $Z_{f}$ $^{(0)}$ /) has been induced by introducing the principle of binomial multilayer transformer and gradient based numerical method is utilized to find the most acceptable value of $Z_{ f}$/$^{(0)}$ . Optimized point of acoustic impedance can be calculated directly from $Z_{f}$ $^{(0)}$ using some simple formula which we propose. We also verify our result by both numerical and experimental method and get a good enhancement especially it concern to the bandwidth of ultrasonic transducer.

  • Ultrasonic knives have been successfully used for the surgery of many medical fields. However, the conventional ultrasonic knives for surgical operation cannot be controlled its resonant frequency. So if the material to cut has different characteristic impedance then different ultrasonic knife will be needed. Because the optimum driving frequency of ultrasonic knife is different by characteristic impedance of material. In this work, using a frequency variable ultrasonic transducer made of multi-layered PZT vibrator, a frequency controllable ultrasonic knife will be suggested. The design and computation principles will be also derived. For this work, firstly, the characteristics of this ultrasonic knife will be analyzed by transmission line model equivalent circuit, and the free admittance characteristics and vibrational velocity distributions will be obtained. Secondly, we will design and make the frequency controllable electrical oscillator for driving this ultrasonic knife.

  • This paper describes sensor network system implementation for the IEEE 1451.2 standard which guarantees compatibilities between various wired sensors. The proposed system consists of the Network Capable Application Processor(NCAP) in the IEEE 1451.0, the Transducer Independent Interface(TII) in the IEEE 1451.2, the Transducer Electronic Data Sheet(TEDS) and sensors. The research goal of this study is to minimize and optimize system complexity for IC design. The NCAP is implemented using C language in personal computer environment. TII is used in the parallel port between PC and an FPGA application board. Transducer is implemented using Verilog on the FPGA application board. We verified the proposed system architecture based on the standards.

  • The design formular of optical focusing systems cannot be applied to ultrasonic B scanners, which use broadband pulses instead of continuous wave. In this paper, a calculation method is studied for analyzing the propagation of ultrasonic broadband pulse excited by ultrasonic array transducers. Using the results, seveial design parameters such as the number of transducer elements, delay time, and the focal point are determined to obtain high resolution in the ultrasonic dynamic focusing system. A dynamic focusing system with low-noise switching characteristics; which attains lateral resolution of 2-3mm all along the axial direction up to 18 cm with a 3.5 MHz linear array transducer, was implemented.
