  • By intraperitoneal administration of thioacetamide to rats, acute liver injury was produced. In these rats, the level of serum GOT and GPT activities showed a remarkable increase and the principal histopathologic change was centrilobular hepatic necrosis. In this study, combined administration of silymarin with promethazine hydrochloride to the rats with acute liver injury which was produced by thioacetamide inhibited the increase of serum transaminase activities and protected the histopathologic change, showing comparatively more improved results than simple administration of silymarin alone. On the basis of these results, it is suggested that promethazine hydrochloride potentiates the effectiveness of silymarin in acute thioacetamide hepatotoxicity of rats.

  • In order to investigate the inter-relation with the growth of the barley root and GOT and GPT activities the growth of root and GOT, GPT activities were measured those which have been supplied various nitrogen compounds ($NO_3-N$, $NH_4-N$, Urea, and Amino acid). The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Growth of barley root supplied with $NH_4-N$ is generally increased in length and weight compared with that of the root fertilized by $NH_4-N$. 2. The above-mentioned root with $NH_4-N$ is not only decreased in its weight and length but also is apt to inhibited its growth, in compared with the root provided with $NO_3-N$. 3. The activities of GOT and GPT for the root fertilized by $NH_4-N$, the badly grown root is generally increased, while of the root supplied with $NO_3-N$ is decreased compared with that of the root fertilized by $NH_4-N$. 4. The activities of GOT and GPT for the root provided with amino acid known as the considerable growth inhibiting compound for rice is generally decreased, while that of the badly known-grown root is increased. 5. The activities of GOT and GPT in the supernatant fraction of the barley is for the most part, high and low in the mitocondrial fraction.

  • The Present experiment was designed to investigate the effects of Soo Jeom San on the function of heart and digestive organs. And thus it was analyzed the total acidity, recovery effect, and the other various enzyme activities such as ATPase, Creatine kinase, Aspartate transaminase, and Lactate dehydrogenase. The results were obtained as follows : 1. The Total acidity decreased after Soo JeomSan administration for 6 days, however the total acidity inoreased after the drug administration for 9 days, these phenomena demonstrate that Soo Jeom San acts as a dual factor. The mechanism of decreasing the total acidity was considered to the inhibition of ATPase activity used for HCI active transport from parietal cells. 2. Soo Jeom San recovered the islets of Langerhans which was disrupted by streptozotocin. The recovery mechanism was suggested that Soo Jeom San stimulates the ${\beta}-cell$ proliferation. 3. Soo Jeom San inhibited the enzyme activities such as Creatine kinase and Aspartate transaminase, however the drug activated Lactate dehydrogenase. According to the obtained results, Soo Jeom San may be used for curing gastric ulcer and myocardiac infarction.

  • In order to investigate the effect of Korean green tea, oolong tea and black tea beverage on the antioxidative detoxification in cadmium(Cd) poisoned rat liver, male Sprague-Dawley rat weighing 143$\pm$3.2g were divided into control and experimental groups. The experimental groups were fed standard diet containing 40ppm Cd and were given distilled water(CD), 5% black tea(BT), oolong tea(OT) and green tea(GT), respectively. Tea beverages were extracted from 5G dry leaves of teas in 100ml hot distilled water by the treatment at 85$^{\circ}C$ for 3 min. Liver xanthine oxidase(XOD) activity was increased by the administration of Cd except GT group. Liver superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-px), glutathione S-transferase(GST) activities were decreased by te administration of Cd but did not decreased by the administration of green tea(in GT group). Vitamin E and reduced glutathione contents were significantly decreased in Cd administered groups. Liver lipid peroxide value in Cd administered groups were increased compared to control group, but was not increased in GT group. Serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(GOT) activities in CD, OT, BT groups were higher than control, but that in GT group was similar to control group. Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase(GPT) activity was not significantly different among various groups. It was concluded that green tea might alleviate peroxidative damage in Cd-administered rat liver by reinforcing antioxidative detoxification system.

  • Objective : To investigate the effects of Artemisiae Capillaris Fructus on liver injury induced $CCl_4$. Method : Carbon tetrachloride-induced hepatic injury in $CCl_4$,-treated rats caused changes in the glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase(GOT), glutamic pyruvic transaminase(GPT) and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activities in the serum. Result : The Methanol extract of the Artemisiae Capillaris Fructus was found to protect the rats against such changes significantly. Protective activities were shown to be present in ether-soluble and buthanol-soluble fractions prepared from the above methanol extract. Conclusion : we have examined the detoxyfying effect, one of several medicinal effects of Artemisiae Capillaris Fructus. on liver disorder experimentally induced by $CCl_4$. as an animal model of liver disorder.

  • The ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) and n-butanol fraction (NBF) of ethanolic extract of Bacopa monnieri aerial parts were screened for hepatoprotective activity and in vivo antioxidant activity on ethanol-induced hepatotoxic rats. Ethyl acetate fraction was found to be more potent even though both the fractions were endowed with significant hepatoprotective activity. EAF and NBF were investigated for hepatoprotective activity in albino rats at 300 mg/kg, p.o. dose and compared with standard drug Silymarin (25 mg/kg, p.o.). Results show that both the fractions were effective in blunting ethanol-induced enhanced activities of serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase, serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, level of serum bilirubin (both total and direct), liver weight loss and was also effective in reducing ethanol-induced lipid peroxidation both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, the fractions could also enhance ethanol-induced suppressed activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and decreased level of reduced glutathione. Results of hepatocellular damage caused by ethanol and its recovery by EAF and NBF, suggest that they might be considered as a potential source of natural hepatoprotective agents, which could be related to the free radical scavenging properties of saponins present in high concentration in the fractions.

  • The histological changes of gill, liver, spleen and muscle, and respiration and blood variables and liver glycogen content were examined in black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli. Fish were exposed to a high level of total ammonia nitrogen (10.4 mg/l) and recovered from exposure $(0.4{\pm}0.2mg/l)$ in a closed recirculating seawater system. In the process of exposure, mortality was $9\%$, and hyperplasia, necrosis or inflammation appeared in all tissues except for muscle. Oxygen consumption was decreased by $49\%$, and red blood cell (RBC) number, hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration were significantly decreased, while plasma glucose contents, activities of glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) and glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) increased. Liver glycogen content significantly increased from $6.6\%\;to\;10.4\%$. A large amount of hemosiderin was observed in the splenic tissue. During the recovery period, RBC number, hematocrit, hemoglobin concentration, GOT and GPT activities were returned to the normal status. Histological status of liver tissue was returned to the normal, but liver glycogen content was not recovered. During the recovery period, spleen melanin-macrophages temporarily increased, but subsequently decreased to the normal status.

  • Body weight gain in the niadn deficient group of quail was markedly lowered as compared to that of the control group, but heart, kidney and liver weight were slighdy reduced reladve to the body weight. Nicotinic acid deficiency resulted in the significant increase of serum glucose level but the serum cholesterol, albumin and total protein levels were not affected to any extent. Glutamic oxaloacetate iransaminase and glutamic pyruvate transaminase activities were significandy enhanced but alkaline phosphatase and lactic dehydrogenase activities were not influenced. Tryptophan and tyrosine levels were remarkably reduced and a similar observation was also made with aspartic acid, glutamic acid and alanine plus serine. However, the levels of basic amino acids such as arginine, histidine and lysine plus branched chain amino acids such as isoleucine, leucine and valine were not affected.
