Comparison of pediatric injury patterns before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in Korea: a retrospective study

  • Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic led to significant changes in the lifestyle patterns of children and affected the patterns of pediatric injuries. This study analyzed the changing patterns of pediatric injury overall and by age groups, based on the datasets before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This study is based on the data of patients who presented with injuries at 23 hospital emergency departments participating in the Emergency Department-based Injury In-depth Surveillance (EDIIS) conducted by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. The surveillance data was categorized by injury mechanism, location, activity, and severity. We analyzed the injury patterns of pediatric patients aged 0 to 15 years. Subgroup analysis was conducted by age group in children aged 7 to 15 years, 1 to 6 years, and <1 year. Results: When comparing the COVID-19 pandemic period to the pre-COVID-19 period, the total number of pediatric patients with injuries decreased by 38.7%, while the proportions of in-home injuries (57.9% vs. 67.9%), and minor injuries (38.9% vs. 39.7%) increased. In the 7 to 15 years group, bicycle riding injuries (50.9% vs. 65.6%) and personal mobility device injuries (2.4% vs. 4.6%) increased. The 1 to 6 years group also showed an increase in bicycle accident injuries (15.8% vs. 22.4%). In the <1 year group, injuries from falls increased (44.5% vs. 49.9%). Self-harm injuries in the 7 to 15 years group also increased (1.6% vs. 2.8%). Conclusions: During the COVID-19 pandemic period, the overall number of pediatric injuries decreased, while injuries occurring at home and during indoor activities increased. Traffic accidents involving bicycles and personal mobility devices and self-harm injuries increased in the 7 to 15 years group. In the <1 year group, the incidence of falls increased. Medical and societal preparedness is needed so that we might anticipate these changes in the patterns of pediatric injuries during future infectious disease pandemics.

Automotive Adaptive Front Lighting Requiring Only On/Off Modulation of Multi-array LEDs

  • The Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) is a part of the active safety system, providing optimized vision to the driver during night time and other poor-sight conditions of the road by automatic adaptation of lighting to environmental and traffic conditions. Basically, an AFS provides four different modes of the passing beam as designated in an United Nations Economic Commission for Europe regulation (ECE324-R123): neutral state or country light (Class C), urban light (Class V), highway light (Class E), and adverse weather light (Class W). In this paper, we first present an optics design for an AFS system capable of producing the Class C/V/E/W patterns requiring only on/off modulation of multi-array LEDs with no need for any additional mechanical components. The AFS optics consists of two separated modules, cutoff and spread; the cutoff module lights a narrow central area with high luminous intensity, satisfying the cutoff regulation, and the spread module forms a wide spread beam of low luminous intensity. Each module consists of two major parts; the first converts a discretely positioned LED array into a full-filled area emitting light source plane, and the second projects the light source plane to a 25 m away target plane. With the combination of these two optics modules, the four beam patterns are formed by simple on/off modulation of multi-array LEDs. Then we report the development of a prototype that was demonstrated to provide the four beam patterns.

스케치 인터페이스를 이용한 항공기동 학습 시스템 개발 (Design of Flight Learning System Using Sketch-based Interface)

  • 최근 스케치 인터페이스를 이용한 많은 컨텐츠 제작 기술들이 선보이고 있다. 특히 애니메이션 제작기술 발달로 인해 스케치북에 연필로 선을 그으면 그 선이 그대로 살아 움직이는 애니메이션으로 제작되는 시스템도 선보이고 있다. 본 연구에서는 스케치 인터페이스를 이용해 복수 항공기의 항공기동을 애니메이션하고 학습할 수 있는 시스템을 개발한다. 항공기의 비행은 대부분 3차원 공간상에서 이루어지고 특정한 규칙 없이 이동하는 일반 애니메이션과는 달리 독특하고 복잡한 비행패턴을 가진다. 즉, 가속과 감속, 상승과 하강, 직진과 선회 비행만이 아닌 가속하면서 하강하거나, 감속하면서 상승하는 등 두 가지 이상의 복합적인 이동패턴을 보인다. 이러한 복잡한 이동패턴들로 인해 항공기를 조종하는 조종사와 공중상황을 통제하는 통제요원들은 기존 애니메이션시스템을 이용해 전체적인 항공기동 상황을 학습하기 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 단위경로 스케치 기법을 제안하여 프레임기반의 애니메이션 제작에 비해 적은 입력만으로도 항공기동 애니메이션을 제작할 수 있도록 한다. 또한 제안하는 시스템은 비행경로 사실화 작업으로 복합적인 비행패턴을 지원하여 실제 비행과 유사한 애니메이션이 가능하다.

고속도로 구간별 통행속도의 패턴과 영향에 따른 군집분석 (Cluster analysis for highway speed according to patterns and effects)

  • 본 논문은 고속도로 전 구간에 대해 2년간(2014년 1월-2015년 12월) 15분 단위로 관측한 고속도로 통행속도 데이터(VDS)를 사용하였다. 본 연구의 첫 번째 목적은 월 요일 시간대의 시간변수에 따라 반복적으로 나타나는 패턴이 비슷한 구간들의 군집을 구하는 것이다. 115개의 시간변수를 주성분분석으로 축약한 후 군집분석을 한 결과 시간변수에 따라 다양한 패턴을 보이는 군집들을 얻었으며, 이 결과는 실시간이 아닌 미래의 통행속도 예측을 위한 모형을 만드는데 활용될 수 있다. 두 번째 목적은 통행속도에 있어서 직접적으로 또는 간접적으로 영향을 주고받는 등 밀접한 관계가 있는 같은 영향권에 있는 구간들을 묶기 위해 군집분석을 하는 것이다. 구간끼리의 순수한 영향 정도를 보기 위해 각 구간별로 통행속도에 대한 백색화한 후 계산한 교차상관함수를 이용하여 군집분석을 하였다. 군집분석 결과 지리적으로 가까운 군집들이 다수 도출되었으며, 이 결과는 실시간 예측에 도움이 될 것이다.

Etiology and Patterns of Maxillofacial Fractures in 518 patients in Korea

  • Purpose: Different patterns in the causes of maxillofacial injury are thought to correlate with socioeconomic status and regional environment. This study investigated maxillofacial fractures in order to analyze maxillofacial trauma characteristics and the relationship between the causes and injury patterns in Korea. Material and methods: A total of 518 patients with maxillofacial fractures who were treated at the Seoul National University Boramae Hospital between 1996 and 2004 were retrospectively analyzed. Data were obtained from the patients' medical records and radiographs. The male to female ratio in the patient group was 2.78:1, and the mean age was 32.3 years. Results: Midfacial fractures were the most common location of injury (46.1%). The most common etiologic factor was an activity associated with daily life (42.6%) including falls, stumbling, and collisions. The second most common cause was assault (32.4%), followed by traffic accidents (13.7%). In the case of midfacial fractures and mandibular fractures, assault was the most common etiologic factor, whereas in the case of alveolar bone fractures, activities associated with daily life were the most common cause. With regard to age groups, assault was the most common cause for patients between 10 and 39 years old and an activity associated with daily life was the most common cause in those under 10 years and over 40 years. Conclusions: This study concluded that activities associated with daily life and assault causes a large proportion of Korean maxillofacial injuries and that preventive measures should be implemented in order to minimize these risks.

통행사슬 유형 구분을 통한 수도권 전일제 근로자의 시간이용 및 활동패턴 분석 (Time-use and Activity Pattern Analysis of Full-time Workers Based on the Classification of Trip-chains in Seoul Metropolitan Area)

  • 본 논문은 시간의 제약이 활동 및 통행으로 연결됨을 확인하는 것이 목적이며, 이를 위해 우리나라 수도권 전일제 근로자의 평일 시간이용에 집중하였다. 특히, 우리나라의 근로자는 다른 OECD 국가의 근로자보다 근로시간에 할애하는 시간이 압도적으로 많다. 이로 인해 나타나는 시간부족현상은 긴 근로 시간으로 인해 근로 외 활동에 제약이 생기는 문제가 나타날 수 있다는 차원에서 삶의 질 문제를 논의해볼 수 있다. 이와 같은 배경에서, 수도권에 거주하는 전일제 근로자의 시간 제약이 활동 및 통행 제약에 영향을 끼치는지 확인하기 위해 2010 가구통행실태조사의 수도권 자료를 활용하여 통행사슬(trip-chain)을 구성하였으며, 이를 유형별로 구분하고 유형에 따른 시간이용패턴을 분석했다. 그 결과, 시간부족현상이 전반적인 활동의 제약으로 나타났으며, 이는 활동패턴에 영향을 끼치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 논문은 근로시간 및 교통에 관련된 정책 대안에 함의를 가지고 있으며, 향후 활동기반 관점의 삶의 질 측정에 도움이 될 것으로 생각된다.

  • Recently, due to the child-friendly city project being conducted by UNICEF, the movement to create a child-friendly cities has been actively promoted by the South Korean government. However, due to the lack of specific physical plans to improve the basic rights of children in the city, the project has been mainly implemented for educational and institutional projects. In this study, we investigated the activities of children and parents living in elementary school neighborhoods. Based on our investigation, we attempted to generate the desired results that can be referred to by physical planners looking to make changes to school neighborhoods by comparing and analyzing children and parents' activity range and life patterns in the neighborhood. The GPS and traffic log surveys were conducted as the primary research methods. The results of this study are as follows: First, both children and parents are most likely to walk in their neighborhoods. In addition, the use of private cars and school vehicles was high, but the use of public transportation was low. Second, the longer parents and children stayed together, the wider the range of their activities. Third, children who spent a lot of time with parents were more likely to have diverse life patterns than children who did not spend a lot of time with parents. Fourth, parents who live in elementary school neighborhoods frequently used commercial facilities and cultural centers around the school. Therefore, it is important to construct facilities around the school for parent-use.

겨울철 고기압 영향에서 도로 위 기상요소와 노면정보 변화 특성에 관한 연구 (Characteristics of Road Weather Elements and Surface Information Change under the Influence of Synoptic High-Pressure Patterns in Winter)

  • Better understanding the mechanism of black ice occurrence on the road in winter is necessary to reduce the socio-economic damage it causes. In this study, intensive observations of road weather elements and surface information under the influence of synoptic high-pressure patterns (22nd December, 2020 and 29th January, and 25th February, 2021) were carried out using a mobile observation vehicle. We found that temperature and road surface temperature change is significantly influenced by observation time, altitude and structure of the road, surrounding terrain, and traffic volume, especially in tunnels and bridges. In addition, even if the spatial distribution of temperature and road surface temperature for the entire observation route is similar, there is a difference between air and road surface temperatures due to the influence of current weather conditions. The observed road temperature, air temperature and air pressure in Nongong Bridge were significantly different to other fixed road weather observation points.

Epidemiology and patterns of nasal bone fracture in elderly patients in comparison to other age groups: an 8-year single-center retrospective analysis

  • Background: Nasal bone fractures are the most common type of facial bone fracture, but are under-studied in adults above 65 years of age. Therefore, we investigated the epidemiology and patterns of nasal bone fractures among older adults in comparison to different age groups. Methods: This retrospective study included 2,321 nasal bone fracture patients who underwent surgery at our hospital from January 2010 to December 2017. The patients were classified by age as preschoolers, school-age children, young and middle-aged adults, and the elderly. We performed pairwise comparisons between elderly patients and each other age group in terms of sex, cause of injury, and fracture type. Results: The 2,321 nasal bone fracture patients included 76 elderly patients (50 men [65.8%] and 26 women [34.2%]). In these patients, the two most common injury causes were falling or slipping down (n= 39; 51.3%) and road traffic accidents (n= 19; 25.0%). According to the Stranc and Robertson classification, the most common force vector was lateral, and plane 2 fractures with lateral forces predominated. Conclusion: The elderly showed similar patterns of nasal bone fractures to those observed in young and middle-aged adults, but significant differences from preschoolers (in the injury vector and plane of fracture) and from school-age children (in the sex ratio and plane of fracture). However, elderly patients presented significantly different epidemiological characteristics compared to the other three groups. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the quality of life of the elderly and prepare for the upcoming super-aged society by taking steps to reduce the incidence and severity of fractures. Possible options for doing so include strengthening individual-level safety factors and expanding the social safety net for the elderly.

기상(氣象)에 따른 교통사고(交通事故) 발생양상(發生樣相)과 빈도(頻度) (Frequency and Pattern of Traffic Accidents in Different Atmospheric Phenomena)

  • 교통사고와 기상요소와의 관련성을 보기 위하여 대구지방에서 1988년도 1월 1일부터 12월 31일까지 1년간 교통사고를 일으킨 총 운전자중 약 1/10인 2,562명을 대상으로 하여 대구측후소에서 측정한 기상요소를 중심으로 그 관련성을 관찰하였다. 사고양상은 사고당시 인적피해와 물적피해로 구분하고 인적피해와 물적피해가 중복된 경우는 인적피해로 간주하였다. 인적피해는 다시 사망, 중상, 경상 등으로 구분하였으며 두가지 이상에 해당될 때는 피해가 큰 쪽으로 결정하였다. 계절별로 보면 겨울철이 1일평균 사고건수도 적고 인적피해 사고의 비율도 가장 낮았으며 계절에 따른 사고양상은 통계학적으로도 유익한 차이가 있었다. 기온에 다른 시간당 사고건수는 $25.1-30.0^{\circ}C$에서 가장 많았고 인적피해 사고의 비율은 41-50%일 때 가장 높았으나 습도에 따른 사고양상은 통계학적으로 유의하지 않았다. 풍속에 따른 시간당 사고건수는 풍속이 강할수록 많아지는 경향을 보였고 인적피해 사고의 비율은 6.1-7.0m/sec일 때 가장 높은 비율을 보였으나 풍속에 따른 사고양상은 통계학적으로 유의하지 않았다. 강수에 따른 시간당 사고건수는 5.1-10.0mm일 때 5.4건으로 가장 많았고 인적피해 사고이 비율은 강수량이 많을수록 높아지는 경향을 보였으며 강수량과 사고양상 간에는 통계학적으로도 유의한 관련성이 있었다. 시정에 따른 시간당 사고건수는 시정 6 Km미만일 때 가장 많았고 인적피해사고의 비율은 6 Km미만일 때 가장 낮았으며 시정과 사고양상 사이에는 통계학적으로 유의한 관련성이 있었다. 적설이 있을 때 시간당 사고건수는 적설이 없을 때보다 많았고 인적피해사고의 비율은 비교적 적었으나 적설유무와 사고양상과는 통계학적으로 유의하지 않았다. 이상의 결과로 보아 자동차 사고는 기온, 습도, 풍속 등 몇가지 기상조건에 따라 서로 그 발생양상에 크고 작은 차이를 보이고 있는데 계절, 강수량 빛 시정에 따른 사고발생 분포의 차이는 통계적으로도 유의했다.
