  • The design and implementation of a high performance PID (Proportional Integral & Differential) style controller with zero-phase error tracking property is considered in this article. Unlike a ball screw driven system, the controller in a direct drive system should provide a high level of tracking performance while avoiding the problems due to the absence of the gear system. The stiff mechanical element in a direct drive system allows high precise positioning capability, but relatively high tracking ability with minimal position error is required. In this work, a feasible position controller named 'Unified PID controller' is presented. It will be shown that the function of the closed position loop can be designed into unity gain system in continuous time domain to provide minimal position error. The focus of this work is in two areas. First, easy gain tunable PID position controller without speed control loop is designed in order to construct feasible high performance drive system. Second, a simple but powerful zero phase error tracking strategy using the pre-designed function of the main control loop is presented for minimal tracking error in all operating conditions. Experimental results with a s-curve based position pattern commonly used in industrial field demonstrate the feasibility and effective performance of the approach.

  • This paper presents a tracking filter of radar beacon system (RBS) for automatic takeoff and landing of an unmanned aerial vehicle. The proposed tracking filter is designed as the decoupled tracking filter to reduce the computational burden. Also, an adaptive estimation method of the measurement error covariance is proposed to provide an improved tracking performance compared to the conventional decoupled tracking filter whenever the accuracy of RBS observations is degraded. 100 times Monte Carlo runs performed to analyze the performance of the proposed tracking filter in case of normal operation and degraded operations, respectively. The simulation results show that the proposed tracking filter provides the improved tracking accuracy in comparison with the conventional decoupled tracking filter.

  • Canting is the optical alignment of mirror facets of heliostat such that the heliostat could focus the energy as a unit concentrator. Canting could improve the optical performance of heliostat and thus improves the efficiency of heliostat and ultimately improves the efficiency of the solar thermal power plant. This study discusses the effect of mirror canting, especially off-axis canting, used to compensate the sun tracking error caused by the heliostat geometrical errors. We first show that the canting could compensate the sun tracking error caused by the heliostat geometrical errors. Then we show that the proper canting time could exist, depending on the heliostat location. Finally we show how much the sun tracking performance could be improved by canting, by providing RMS sun tracking error. The limitation and caution of using canting to improve the sun tracking performance are also discussed.

  • An advanced method of Relaxed Static Stability (RSS) is utilized for improving the aerodynamic performance of modern version supersonic jet fighter aircraft. The laws of flight control system utilize RSS criteria in both longitudinal and lateral-directional axes to achieve performance enhancements. Particularly, the design of longitudinal control laws for utilizing RSS methods greatly affects the performance of the aircraft in Air-to-Air Tracking and Air-to-Ground modes, which improves weapon delivery. In the area of Air-to-Air Tracking, the development of longitudinal control laws aids in the fine tracking and gross acquisition of other aircraft. This paper proposes that new concept of longitudinal control law introduce in order to improve fine tracking performance in air-to-air tracking maneuver. Result of HQS pilot simulation and flight test, fine tracking performance improve without degradation of gross acquisition when new concept of control law is applied.

  • In the study, simulation result was studied by connecting PID controller in series to the established Neural Networks Controller. Neural Network model is composed of two layers to evaluate tracking performance improvement. The reqular dynamic characteristics was also studied for the expected error to be minimized by using Widrow-Hoff delta rule. As a result of the study, We identified that tracking performance inprovement was developed more in case of connecting PID than Neural Network Contoller and that tracking plant parameter in 251 sample was approached rapidly case of time variable.

  • In this paper, we predict tracking performance of the multiple hypothesis tracking (MHT) algorithm. The MHT algorithm is known to be an optimal Bayesian approach and is superior to asly other tracking filters because it takes into account the events that the measurements can be originated from new targets and false alarms 3s well as interesting targets. In the MHT algorithm, a number of candidate hypotheses are generated and evaluated later as more data are received. The probability of each candidate hypotheses is approximately evaluated by using the hybrid conditional average approach (HYCA). We performed numerical experiments to show the validity of our performance prediction.

  • In this paper, a PN code tracking loop with extended Kalman filter (EKF) is proposed for a direct-sequence spread-spectrum. EKF is used to estimate amplitude and delay in a multipath fading channel. It is shown that tracking error performance is significantly improved by EKF compared with a conventional tracking loop.

  • Multipath is an inevitable error source in radio navigation system such as GPS, it causes signal tracking errors such as carrier tracking errors, code tracking errors. Since code tracking error is a dominant error in absolute positioning, this paper focuses on the improvement of code tracking performance. This paper proposes a method that detects the change of autocorrelation function's slope and mitigates the multipath error. Also, this paper shows the performance evaluation results by post-processing the digitized RF samples.

  • Multiple target tracking mainly focuses on tracking unknown number of targets in the complex environment of clutter and missed detection. The generalized labeled multi-Bernoulli (GLMB) filter has been shown to be an effective approach and attracted extensive attention. However, in the scenarios where the clutter rate is high or measurement-outliers often occur, the performance of the GLMB filter will significantly decline due to the Gaussian-based likelihood function is sensitive to clutter. To solve this problem, this paper presents a robust GLMB filter and smoother to improve the tracking performance in the scenarios with high clutter rate, low detection probability, and measurement-outliers. Firstly, a Student-T distribution variational Bayesian (TDVB) filtering technology is employed to update targets' states. Then, The likelihood weight in the tracking process is deduced again. Finally, a trajectory smoothing method is proposed to improve the integrative tracking performance. The proposed method are compared with recent multiple target tracking filters, and the simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively improve tracking accuracy in the scenarios with high clutter rate, low detection rate and measurement-outliers. • This paper presents a recognition performance of VOR (Vestibular-Ocular Reflex) based vision tracking system for mobile robot. The VOR is a reflex eye movement which, during head movements, produces an eye movement in the direction opposite to the head movement, thus maintaining the image of interested objects placed on the center of retina. We applied this physiological concept to the vision tracking system for high recognition performance in mobile environments. The proposed method was implemented in a vision tracking system consisting of a motion sensor module and an actuation module with vision sensor. We tested the developed system on an x/y stage and a rate table for linear motion and angular motion, respectively. The experimental results show that the recognition rates of the VOR-based method are three times more than non-VOR conventional vision system, which is mainly due to the fact that VOR-based vision tracking system has the line of sight of vision system to be fixed to the object, eventually reducing the blurring effect of images under the dynamic environment. It suggests that the VOR concept proposed in this paper can be applied efficiently to the vision tracking system for mobile robot.
