  • This study was conducted to examine the physiological and biochemical responses against UV-B radiation in the seedling of 15 different rice cultivars, having the different physiological sensitivities. Out of 15 rice cultivars tested, moderate and susceptible groups showed significant decreases in biomass and RGR (relative growth rate). Contents of total chlorophyll were reduced remarkedly by irradiation of UV-B. In all rice cultivars tested, the content of chlorophyll a was strongly decreased, while the contents of chlorophyll b were slightly reduced without showing clear different among three groups and 15 cultivars. Carotenoid content was largely reduced by UV-B radiation, whereas polyamine content was moderately increased. The contents of MDA (malondialdehyde) that reflect the level of lipid peroxidation of cell membranes were clearly increased by UV-B stress, showing higher content in susceptible cultivars than moderate and torelant cultivars. The physiological important parameters highly related to visible injury were leaf color, chlorophyll, carotenoid, and lipid peroxidation, whereas biomass and polyamines were not closely correlated. Based on this results, it was concluded that changes of visible injury and the contents of chlorophyll and MDA could be adequately applied and utilized as physiological indicators to UV-B radiation.

  • Malaysia is regarded as one of the leaders in the global halal marketplace, which has undergone huge growth in the past few years. The aims of this study were to identify imported food consumers in Malaysia based on Food Related Lifestyle (FRL) attributes and to investigate the demographic characteristics and purchasing behaviors of each segmented groups. Using an online survey, a total of 600 responses were collected in Malaysia. Excluding invalid responses, cluster analysis segmented imported food consumers into four FRL groups: impulsive, high interest, low interest, and traditional consumers. The results of this study were as follows. First, depending on lifestyle, the groups exhibited significant differences in demographic characteristics (age, race, religion, and education level). Second, differences in purchasing behaviors (purchasing frequency, place, and information sources of imported food products) were verified. Especially, purchasing frequency of imported food was higher in the high interest consumer group compared to the other groups. Based on these results, marketing implications of the study findings are discussed.

  • The supply of digital homes has been increasing but digital home services which meet consumer needs under the various conditions have not identified. The purpose of the study was to investigate the residents' personal characteristics living in digital apartments with comparison of their trait of innovativeness toward technology. Residents who lived in two apartment complexes equipped with fundamental digital home services (Level 1 service) were selected to conduct the survey. A total of 500 responses were used for data analyses. Responses were classified into three groups based on their innovativeness toward technology for data analyses. The results of the study showed that residents' sociodemographic and housing related characteristics differed according to their acceptance trait of new technology. Early adopters and early majority were younger, higher income, and more educated than late adopters. Also, they were more likely to be renters and consider installation of digital home services before they moved in. Respondents who had higher innovativeness tended to experience more positive life changes after using digital home services and possessed more and many digital appliances. Remote control and remote meter reading service were the most preferable features among digital home services without no differences in three groups.

  • This study presents a dynamic response analysis of operational and parked wind turbines in order to gain better understanding of the roles of wind loads on turbine blades and tower in the generation of turbine response. The results show that the wind load on the tower has a negligible effect on the blade responses of both operational and parked turbines. Its effect on the tower response is also negligible for operational turbine, but is significant for parked turbine. The tower extreme responses due to the wind loads on blades and tower of parked turbine can be estimated separately and then combined for the estimation of total tower extreme response. In current wind turbine design practice, the tower extreme response due to the wind loads on blades is often represented as a static response under an equivalent static load in terms of a concentrated force and a moment at the tower top. This study presents an improved equivalent static load model with additional distributed inertial force on tower, and introduces the square-root-of-sum-square combination rule, which is shown to provide a better prediction of tower extreme response.

  • The emerging technology of self compacting concrete, fiber reinforcement together reduces vibration and substitute conventional reinforcement which help in improving the economic efficiency of the construction. The objective of this work is to find the regression model to determine the response surface of mix proportioning Steel Fiber Reinforced Self Compacting Concrete (SFSCC) using statistical investigation. A total of 30 mixtures were designed and analyzed based on Design of Experiment (DOE). The fresh properties of SCC and mechanical properties of concrete were studied using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). The results were analyzed by limited proportion of fly ash, fiber, volume combination ratio of two steel fibers with aspect ratio of 50/35: 60/30 and super plasticizer (SP) dosage. The center composite designs (CCD) have selected to produce the response in quadratic equation. The model responses included in the primary stage were flowing ability, filling ability, passing ability and segregation index whereas in harden stage of concrete, compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength at 28 days were tested. In this paper, the regression model and the response surface plots have been discussed, and optimal results were found for all the responses.

  • The dynamic characteristics of a condenser are numerically studied for the control of air-conditioning systems. The important factors, such as the refrigerant flow rate and refrigerant temperature, air velocity and air temperature at the condenser inlet, are incorporated into the analysis. This study was focused on the analysis of dynamic responses by transfer function method in the condenser. Block diagrams were made through analytic transfer function, and dynamic responses are evaluated on Bode diagrams in the frequency response. These results may be used for determining an optimum design parameters in an actual component and total systems. Also, the mathematical models, frequency response and steady state response may be used to increase understanding, to obtain useful information for its commercialization, to evaluate the hardware and the optimum design parameters, the design control system and to determine the best controller setting for the refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

  • The germination responses of Cassia mimosoides var. nomame seeds to temperature were examined under various conditions. The temperature range allowing germination was $20~40^{\circ}C$, and the linear relationship between the germination rate and temperature appeared to exist between $28~38^{\circ}C$ The total thermal time required for germination (10~80%) of C. mimosoides seeds ranged from 259 Kh (degree Kelvin$\times$hours) to 421 Kh and base temperature range was relatively constant, i.e., $23.39~26.68^{\circ}C$. In the increasing temperature (IT) regime, C. mimosoides seeds started to germinate at $16^{\circ}C$ and showed greater germination rate with increasing temperatures. The final germination rate was 64% at $36^{\circ}C$. On the other hand, in the decreasing temperature (DT) regime, the seeds began to germinate at $36^{\circ}C$, and the final germination rate was 52% at $20^{\circ}C$. An induced dormancy occurred at $16^{\circ}C$ in the DT regime.

  • Purpose: Infants at neonatal intensive care units (NICU) are invariably exposed to various procedural and environmental stimuli. The study was performed to compare the pain responses in three NICU stimulants and to examine the clinical feasibility for NICU infants using CRIES, FLACC and PIPP. Method: In a correlational study, a total of 94 NICU stimulants including angio-catheter insertions, trunk-rubbings and loud noises, was observed for pain responses among 64 infants using CRIES, FLACC and PIPP. Results: A significant difference was identified among the mean scores in CRIES($F_{(2, 91)}$=47.847, p=.000), FLACC($F_{(2, 91)}$=41.249, p=.000) and PIPP($F_{(2. 91)}$=16.272, p=.000) to three stimulants. In a Post-hoc Scheff test, an angio-catheter insertion showed the highest scores in CRIES, FLACC and PIPP compared to the other two stimulations. A strong correlation was identified between CRIES and FLACC in all three stimulations(.817 < r < .945) while inconsistent findings were identified between PIPP and CRIES or FLACC. Conclusions: The results of the study support that CRIES and FLACC are reliable and clinically suitable pain measurements for NICU infants. Further studies are needed in data collection time-point as well as clinical feasibility on PIPP administration to assess pain response in infants, including premature infants.
