  • During KSTAR plasma experiments, torsional $Alfv\acute{e}n$ waves in the frequency of few GHz or below were detected. To understand this plasma waves during the crash of MHD instabilities, an RF spectrometer has been developed for detection of the radiated RF signals in the KSTAR Tokamak. It has the capability of broadband RF spectral measurement (50 ~ 400 MHz). To detect the broadband RF signals which are radiated from the KSTAR systems, a broadband antenna is the key feature of the RF spectrometer. In this paper, a broadband bowtie antenna for detection of $Alfv\acute{e}n$-waves in the KSTAR Tokamak is presented. Planar-type bowtie antenna is designed and fabricated on an FR4 substrate with thickness of 1.6 mm. The antenna consists of bowtie shaped balanced radiators and broadband planar balun. The antenna is designed to have an input impedance of 50 Ohm, and a taper-shaped balun is adopted for field and impedance matching between 50 Ohm transmission line to 110 Ohm feeding network of balanced radiators. The implemented antenna provides around -3 to 3 dBi of gain for the whole frequency band. The VSWR of the bowtie antenna is less than 12:1 over the frequency bandwidth of 50 to 2000 MHz.

  • We propose rectangular type spiral coils with folded comers for the applications to low frequency guided wave magnetostrictive transducers and describe a method for making the proposed coils from insulated electrical wire such as enameled copper wire. Expressions for the electrical properties of the coils are also presented and compared with experimental measurements. An overlapped-2-channel folded-comer spiral-coil array is fabricated and applied to a magnetostrictive strip transducer generating and detecting fundamental torsional mode guided waves. From the results we conclude that the design and fabrication method make it possible to use the magnetostrictive transducers optimized for various guided wave applications and also will greatly help engineers gain easy access to the optimized transducers.

  • The sensor configuration of the magnetostrictive guided wave system can be described as a single continuous transducing element which makes it difficult to separate the individual modes from the reflected signal. In this work we develop the mode decomposition technique employing chirplet transform, which is able to separate the individual modes from dispersive and multimodal waveform measured with the magnetostrictive sensor, and to estimate the time-frequency centers and individual energies of the reflection, which would be used to locate and characterize defects. The reflection coefficients are calculated using the modal energies of the separated mode. Results from experimental results on a carbon steel pipe are presented, which show that the accurate and quantitative defect characterization could become enabled using the proposed technique.

  • The attenuation of the fundamental non-torsional modes that propagate down buried steel water pipes has been studied. The mode shapes, mode attenuation due to leakage into the surrounding medium and the scattering of the modes as they interact with pipe joints and fittings have been investigated. In the low frequency region the mode predicted to dominate over significant propagation distances approximates a plane wave in the water within pipe. The established acoustic technique used to locate leaks in buried steel water pipes assumes that leak noise propagates as a single non-dispersive mode at a velocity related to the low frequency asymptote of this water borne mode.

  • The gyroscopes have been used as a suitable inertial instrument for the navigation guidance and attitude controls. The accuracy as very sensitive sensor is limited by the lock-in region (dead band) by the frequency coupling between two counter-propagating waves at low rotation rates. This frequency coupling gives no phase difference and an angular increment is not detected. This problem can be overcome by the mechanical dithering. The purpose of the mechanical dithering is to suppress the dead band, oscillate the monoblock about the rotation axis and add an external rotation rate. This paper presents the theoretical considerations of the mechanical performances of dither on the basis of the loading condition and angular characteristics due to the piezoelement deformation and the validity of theoretical equations are compared through FEM (Finite Element Method) simulations.

  • A study of the possible axisymmetric modes that propagate at low frequencies in buried, water-filled iron pipes is presented. It is well known that for a vacuum-pipe-vacuum system the sole non-torsional axisymmetric mode that exists at low frequencies is the fundamental L(0,1) mode. When a pipe is filled with water and still surrounded by a vacuum it is also known that another mode then appears which at low frequencies is characterized by predominantly axial water-borne displacements. In addition to these modes, this paper explores two other, less well known axisymmetric modes whose existence depends on the acoustic properties of the outer medium that surrounds a pipe. In this paper the predicted characteristics of these modes are presented.

  • A rotating rigid disk, attached on a flexible shaft or supported by a torsional spring, experiences precessional whirling due to gyroscopic moment loading. It is well known in rotor dynamics area that, as the rotational speed increases, the precessional mode of the rotating rigid disk starts splitting into two: forward and backward precessional modes. On the other hand, it is also well known in disk vibration area that a rotating flexible disk also shows another kind of mode splitting phenomenon due to the rotation, resulting in forward and backward traveling waves. When rotating multiple flexible disks are coupled in vibration with the supporting Flexible shaft, the associated mode splitting should be compatible with the two seemingly different vibration analysis methods. This paper investigates the possibility of fusing the precessional and traveling wave mode splittings so that the bending coupled disk vibrations in HDD spindle systems can be better understood.

  • The gyroscopes have been used as a suitable inertial instrument for the navigation guidance and attitude controls. The accuracy as very sensitive sensor is limited by the lock-in region (dead band) due to the frequency coupling between two counter-propagating waves at low rotation rates. This frequency coupling gives no phase difference, and an angular increment is not detected. This problem can be overcome by mechanically dithering the gyroscope. This paper presents the design method of mechanical dither by the theoretical considerations and the verification of the theoretical equations through FEM applications. As a result, comparing to the past result, the maximum prediction error of resonant frequency was within 3 percent and peak dither rate was within 5 percent. It was found that the theoretical equations can be feasible for the mechanical performance of dither.
