  • Precise digital elevation model (DEM) is an important issue in coastal area where DEMs in a time series are especially required. Although LIDAR system is useful in coastal regions, it is not yet popular in Korea mainly because of its high surveying cost and national security reasons. Recently, precise coastal DEM have been made using radar interferometry, waterline method. One of these methods, Spaceborne imaging radar interferometry has been widely used to measure the topography and deformation of the Earth. We acquired ALOS PALSAR FBD mode (Fine Beam Dual) data for evaluating the quality of interferograms and their coherency. The purpose of this study is construction of DEM using the ALOS PALSAR data using radar interferometry and analysis of surface characteristics by coherence and magnitude map over the Ganghwado and Siwha tidal flats and near coastal lands.

  • Due to recent development of high temperature high pressure(HTHP) diamond synthetic and treatment technology, we need to identify the natural diamonds fast, reliable, and economically. We proposed using new method of UV fluorescence and X-ray Lang topography imaging for distinguishing one synthetic diamond from four natural colored diamonds. We observe unique local stress field uneven image in synthetic diamond using UV fluorescence and Lang topography characterization, while uniform images in natural diamonds. Especially, X-ray Lang method offered the better identification power with better high resolution on stress field images.

  • For economy and convenience, seismic refraction survey is widely used in surveying for large civil engineering work. The purpose of this study is to obtain the numerical responses of various models using Kirchhoff migration, and to analyze its application to the real data processing. Synthetic traveltime curve was calculated by vidale's algorithm, and various models such as 2 or 3 layer model and irregular topography model are tested to simulate the response of real structure. In order to compare the effect of initial velocity model, true velocity models, inversion results by tomography, smooth velocity models are used as an initial guess. The responses of model data show that the algorithm of this study is more sensitive to initial velocity model than the reflection survey, so choosing a suitable initial velocity model will be the most important thing in real data processing.

  • Recently resistivity survey is widely used for site investigations in the field of civil engineering. Since such application area requires accurate interpretation tools especially in the area of complicated geology and rough terrain topography, we developed a three-dimensional (3-D) resistivity inversion code, which can reconstruct real earth structures. Furthermore, the inversion code gives resolution-enhanced images by applying the ACB(Active Constraint Balancing) method. With the help of this inversion code, 3-D resistivity survey is now used as new techniques for site investigations in civil engineering problem. By imaging the 3-D resistivity distribution, we could get useful informations such as depth distribution of basement rock, distribution of weak zone, fractures and cavities which is crucial to civil engineers.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics, validity, and reliability of non-radiological assessment tools of scoliosis that have been studied so far. Methods: Electronic databases including Pubmed, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Science On, RISS, OASIS were searched by keywords including 'scoliosis assessment', 'scoliosis screening', 'physical examination', 'functional measurement', 'photography', and 'smartphone'. Results: 32 articles using radiation-free assessments were identified from 1,011 records. The mostly used non-radiological methods were Surface topography, Scoliometer, Ultrasound, Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging, and Photography. The other methods were Gait analysis, 3D depth sensor imaging, and Low intensity electromagnetic scan. Conclusions: It was found that non-radiological assessment tools might reduce the number of radiographs taken in scoliosis patients. To increase the reliability and validity, further research on the measurement tools of scoliosis will be needed.

  • SMM is a dynamic noncontact electric force microscopy that allows simultaneous access to the electrical properties of molecular system such as surface potential, surface charge, dielectric constant and conductivity along with the topography. SNOAM is a new tool for surface imaging which was introduced as one application of AFM. Operated with non-contact forces between the optical fiber and sample as well as equipped with the piezoscanners, the instrument reports on surface topology without damaging or modifying the surface for measuring of optical characteristic in the films. Here we report our recent results of its application to nanoscopic study of domain structures and electrical functionality in organic thin films by SMM. Furthermore, we have illustrated the SNOAM image in obtaining the merocyanine dye films as well as the optical image.

  • The worn crater wear geometry of coated tools after machining has been configured by using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy(CLSM) and the Wavelet-based filtering technique. The CLSM can be well suited to construct the three-dimensional crater wear on the rake surfaces of coated tips. However, The raw heightness data of HEI(height encoded image) acquired by CLSM must be filtered due to the electronic and imaging noise occurring in constructing the crater image. So the Wavelet-based filtering algorithm is necessary to denoise the shape features in a micro scales so as to realize accurate crater wear topography analysis. The crater wear patterns filtered enable us to predict the crater wear shape in order to study the tool wear evolution. The study shows that the technique by combining the CLSM and Wavelet-based filtering is an excellent one to obtain the geometries of worn tool rake surfaces over a wide range of surface resolution in a micro scale.

  • Nondestructive surface imaging of elastic characteristic and mechanical property has been studied on nanoscale surface with ultrasonic AFM. Resonance frequency variation of cantilever is theoretically analyzed with respect to contact mechanics as well as experimentally measured. The contact resonance frequency is calculated theoretically using the spring-mass and Herzian model in accordance with the resonance frequency of UAFM cantilever measured experimentally. Consequently, the topography and amplitude images could be obtained successfully and the elastic characteristic at the nanoscale surface was evaluated qualitatively by amplitude signals.

  • Seismic refraction survey was peformed for 10 lines along NE-SW and NW-SE directions above Nampoong gallery at Makyo-ri, Dogye, Samcheok, Kangwon-do. 48 geophones were laid in line with the interval of 1m, and a 5Kg hammer was used as a source at 5 points for each line. Data processing was done using reciprocal time method, GRM, and traveltime tomography which utilizes wavefront expansion method for forward process and SIRT for inversion. The result shows that the first layer has its lower boundary between 3.49m and 8.88m. The P-wave velocity of the first and the second layer were estimated as 270 360m/s and 1550 1940m/s respectively. When the boundary of the first and second layer is smooth enough and the velocity difference is large enough, GRM has little advantage over reciprocal time method. The result of reciprocal method and traveltime tomography shows consistency. The northeast part of the boundary has syncline structure, which is similar to the topography above. This implies that the collapse of the cavities of Nampoong gallery result in the subsidence of the ground surface. The subsidence is in progress across the Youngdong railroad, therefore a proper reinforcement work is required.
