A case of calcifying odontogenic cyst associated with an unerupted tooth which appeared in the left maxillary sinus of a 16-year-old woman, was reported. Clinical examination revealed painless swelling on the left maxillary posterior region and the cheek. Radiographically, this lesion showed a monolocular radiolucent shadow with calcified materials and unerupted maxillary second premolar. Histological examination revealed cystic structure with presence of the ghost cells, calcified tissue and unerupted tooth. This lesion was classified as Type IB of COC according to classification of the Praetorius. After surgical removal of the cyst, the wound healed uneventfully and the lesion is now free of symptoms.
Arachnoid cysts are intra-arachnoid collections of cerebrospinal fluid. They may cause neurological deficit through expansion that can compress normal neural tissue and obstruct cerebrospinal fluid flow. Intracranial arachnoid cysts were found in 4 patients aged 10 months to 20 months(mean age 15 months). The presenting symptoms included circling(dog 2,3), seizure(dog 1), progressive weakness(dog 1,2,3), increasing scoliosis(dog 3), worsening spasticity(dog 3), and salivation(dog 3). One patient showed no symptoms from the intracranial arachnoid cyst. There were no significant findings in complete blood count and serum chemistry. Computed tomography(CT) with/without magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) scans were performed in these cases. Hypodense intracranial arachnoid cyst was observed on CT images in dog 4. Sagittal T1-weighted(T1W) and T2-weighted(T2W) images and transverse T1W and T2W images revealed a intracranial arachnoid cysts with syringohydromyelia(dog 3) and hydrocephalus(dog 3,4) in the brain. Clinical signs of three cases were improved by medication.
Background: Transglutaminase-2 (TG-2) has been reported to play an important role in the process of fibrosis. However, TG-2 studies on fibroproliferation of acute lung injury (ALI) are absent. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of TG-2 in the fibroproliferation of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI. Methods: The male C57BL/6 mice of 5 weeks age were divided into 3 groups; control group (n=30) in which $50{\mu}L$ of saline was given intratracheally (IT), LPS group (n=30) in which LPS 0.5 mg/kg/$50{\mu}L$ of saline was given IT, and LPS+Cyst group treated with intraperitoneal 200 mg/kg of cystamine, competitive inhibitor of TG-2, after induction of ALI by LPS. TG-2 activity and nuclear factor $(NF)-{\kappa}B$ were measured in lung tissue homogenate. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$, interleukin (IL)-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, myeloperoxidase (MPO), and transforming growth factor (TGF)-${\beta}1$ were measured using bronchoalveolar lavage fluids. Histopathologic ALI score and Mallory's phosphotunistic acid hematoxylin (PTAH) for collagen and fibronectin deposition were performed. Results: The TG-2 activities in the LPS group were significantly higher than the control and LPS+Cyst groups (p<0.05). The TNF-${\alpha}$ and IL-$1{\beta}$ concentrations and $NF-{\kappa}B$ activity were lower in the LPS+Cyst group than the LPS group (p<0.05). The LPS+Cyst group showed lower MPO, ALI score, TGF-${\beta}1$ concentration, and Mallory's PTAH stain than the LPS group, but the differences were not significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Inhibition of TG-2 activity in the LPS-induced ALI prevented early inflammatory parameters, but had limited effects on late ALI and fibroproliferative parameters.

Purpose: The odontogenic keratocysts demonstrated a high recurrence rate and a biologically aggressive nature. This might be due to unknown factors inherent in the epithelium or enzymatic activity in the fibrous wall. Bcl-2 protein is characterized by its ability to inhibit apoptosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression and distribution of bcl-2 in the OKCs, its possible relationship with the tumorous characteristics, such as the aggressive nature and high recurrence rate, and its usefulness to differentiate OKCs from dentigerous cysts. Materials and Methods: Formalin fixed paraffin-embedded tissue sections of 53 OKCs, and 44 dentigerous cyst were immunohistochemically analyzed quantitatively for the immunoreactivity of the bcl-2 protein with i-solution. Results: More Bcl-2 expression was observed in the OKCs (mean34.387%) than dentigerous cyst (mean11.144%) with statistical significance (P<0.001). Seventeen and 15 of the 32 OKCs in this study showed positivity in the basal layer and basal/suprabasal layers, respectively. In dentigerous cyst, 2 of 3 showed positivity in the basal cell layer. Conclusion: Considering that bcl-2 over expression may lead to the increased survival of epithelial cells, this study demonstrated a possible relationship between the aggressive nature of OKC and the intrinsic growth potential of its lining epithelium. Furthermore, the basal/suprabasal distribution of bcl-2 positive cells was observed in some OKCs, which might have a significant impact on the behavior of cysts. The bcl-2 expression of OKCs can be useful for differentiating OKCs from dentigerous cysts.
Ameloblastoma is an aggressive but benign epithelial neoplasm of odontogenic origin, and the occurrence of odontogenic epithelium in the wall of a dentigerous cyst is well-known entity. The presence of ameloblastic proliferation in the walls of odontogenic cysts has been reported for many years. Cahn in 1933 described a case in which he considered an ameloblastoma to have originated in a dentigerous cyst, and numerous other cases of ameloblastomatous proliferation have since been reported. In 1977, Robinson and Martinez described a distinct variant of ameloblastoma in which the response to curettage was found to be favorable with a recurrence rate of 25%. The gross and microscopic features indicated that this variant vas associated with a large cystic cavity with either luminal or mural proliferation of ameloblastic tumor cells, and they referred to this variant as unicystic ameloblastoma. Unicystic ameloblastoma occurs most commonly in the second and third decades of life, which is considerably younger than the average age of discovery for the classical ameloblastoma. For the accurate histopathological diagnosis of the unicystic ameloblastoma, the specimen obtained the excisional biopsy, complete enucleation or incisional biopsy from the multiple site of the lesion. This article provides histopathologic evidence of multilocular unicystic ameloblastoma in which ameloblastic tissue was associated with a dentigerous cyst that was found in a 31-year-old female, and complete radiographic, photographic, and microscopic documentation is presented.

Enteric duplications associated with the pancreas are especially uncommon, and the differential diagnosis of pancreatic duplication cysts is often difficult, and may be confused with various cystic lesions of the pancreas. We report a case of pancreatic duplication cyst; present the images and laboratory findings including cyst fluid tumor markers. MR and MRS findings enabled the detection of the location, contour, characteristics of cystic fluid and definition of tissue planes between the lesion and adjacent structures, providing useful information for an accurate surgical approach.
Lateral eyebrow mass with primary skull lesion are rare in pediatric population. Although epidermoid cyst and dermoid cyst are the most commonly encountered skull lesions in pediatric population, Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is rarely reported. We report a case of LCH arising from the lateral eyebrow with osteolytic lesion involving the frontal bone. A 5-year-old boy was presented with a hard, fixed mass in his lateral eyebrow. Contrast magnetic resonance imaging revealed inhomogeneous enhancement of the mass with direct invasion of the frontal bone and adjacent dura mater. Under general anesthesia, linear incision at the lateral eyebrow region was made. Intraoperative evaluation revealed hard, fixed and well-defined soft tissue mass. The final extirpated mass was $2.5{\times}2.4cm$ in size, and was accompanied by a $1{\times}1cm$ sized defect on the frontal bone with intact dura mater. The surgical wound was closed primarily by a layer-by-layer fashion. Histologic examination was later performed for definite diagnosis. The histologic examination revealed abnormal proliferation of Langerhans cell with granuloma formation. Radionuclide bone scan and positron emission tomography was taken and revealed free of multi-organ involvement. At 3 months after surgery, natural looking contour at the lateral eyebrow region was observed with no tumor recurrence. Differential diagnosis of the hard and fixed mass at the lateral eyebrow region affecting the primary skull lesion from pediatric population includes epidermoid cyst, dermoid cyst and LCH. Generally, brief physical examination with plain X-ray view can be performed for clinical evaluation, but for a definite diagnosis, contrast MRI may be helpful.

Ranula is a mucocele which occurs at the mouth floor and is mostly related to sublingual gland. In other words ranula is definded as a pseudocyst which occurs as the secretion duct of sublingual gland is destructed there as the saliva from the secretion duct flows out and retention in the soft tissue. The cause of ranula is destruction or obstruction of the duct. The clinical findings of ranula is a painless, unilateral bluish transparent swelling around the frenum and shows fluctuation when palpated. Histological finding represent a formation of cavity inside the connective tissue, but a pseudo-cyst can be seen which the wall of the cyst is composed of granulation tissue rather than epithelial cells. The first treatment of ranula can be considered as marsupialization. which induces the inner wall of the Ranula to be a part of oral mucosa. This case report shows a treatment of marsupialization with gauze packing in a young patient representing a clinical finding of characteristic ranula.

Buckley's formocresol was first introduced as a pulp medicament in 1904, and since 1930, it has been the treatment of choice for primary molar pulpotomies. Formocresol has fixation effect of pulp tissue and high clinical success rate. But side effect such as displacement and loss of permanent successor, amelogenesis imperfecta, cyst formation, mutation by general absorption, possibility of cancer induction have been reported. Of those, dentigerous cyst can form in the periradicular region after formocresol pulpotomy caused by an alteration of the reduced enamel epithelium, which result in fluid accumulation between the epithelium and the tooth crown. The present case describes a 6-year-old girl who had accidentally discovered in the panoramic radiograph a single, well-defined, radioluscent area enclosing the second unerupted mandibular premolar. The second left primary molar had been pulpotomizied 3 year before. Surgical treatment was carried out, the primary molar was extracted and cystectomy was performed under local anesthesia. In the extracted second primary molar, formocresol cotton pellet was left in the pulp chamber. Histologic study confirmed the suspected diagnosis of dentigerous cyst. This report present a case of dentigerous cyst associated with inadequate formocresol pulpotomized deciduous molar.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristic features of the cells and tissues of the chronic periapical lesions using light microscope and electron microscope. Fifteen dental periapical lesions were obtained from the patients undergoing periapical surgery. Each specimen was divided into two parts along the tooth axis. One part was routinely processed for histopathologic examinations. 12 periapical lesions were diagnosed as granuloma and 3 periapical specimens as periapical cyst. The other part was fixed in 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1M sodium cacodylate buffer at pH 7.4 and 1% osmic acid in same buffer. They were embedded in Epon 812. The semithin sections were used for the orientation of the lesions and the ultrathin sections were stained conventionally and examined with AEI Corynth 500 electron microscope. The results were as follows. 1. PMN and macrophages, which were dominant cell type, were scattered in small or large numbers throughout the central destructive area of granuloma. In the granulomatous area, plasma cells and lymphoytes were found in significant number and a lot of new capillary formation were revealed. Clefts caused by cholesterol were often seen in the connective tissue. Occasionally foam cells became collected in groups and epithelial proliferation were present. 2. In both granuloma and cyst, some plasma cells contained narrow cisternae of granular endoplasmic reticulum of which was tightly packed with electron dense materials, and other cells exhibited dilated profiles of granular endoplasmic reticulum. 3. In the area where plasma cells and lymphocytes were collected in groups, lymphocytes with well developed nucleolus and profuse cytoplasm were found and differentiating plasma cells were also present. 4. In the epithelial strands of the granulomatous area, epithelial cells contained enlarged endoplasmic reticulum, tonofilaments and ribosoms. Toward the intercellular space epithelial cells protruded a few microvilli. In the intercellular space, exudate-like electron dense materials, most of which was attached to the plasma membrane, appeared. 5. Some foam cells filled with numerous lipid droplets and others had lipid droplets and crystal-like structures. 6. Cyst epithelium consisted of bright cells and dark cells. The former had bright cytoplasm and small amounts of ribosoms, and the latter dark cytoplasm, many ribosoms, mitochondria and elongated microvilli. 7. Epithelial cells near the cyst lumen protruded a lot of long microvilli toward intercellular space and cyst lumen.
