A finite element analysis for the wing and landing gear of a composite target-drone air vehicle was performed. For the wing analysis, two load cases were considered: a 5g symmetric pull-up and a -1.5g symmetric push-over. For the landing gear analysis, a sinking velocity of 1.4 m/s at a 2g level landing condition was taken into account. MSC/NASTRAN and LS-DYNA were utilized for the static and dynamic analyses, respectively. Finite element results were verified by the static test of a prototype wing under a 6g symmetric pull-up condition. The test showed a 17% larger wing tip deflection than the finite element analysis. This difference is believed to come from the material and geometrical imperfections incurred during the manufacturing process.
In this paper an analytical model in a closed form able to reproduce the monotonic flexural response of external RC beam-column joints with smooth rebars is presented. The column is subjected to a constant vertical load and the beam to a monotonically increasing lateral force applied at the tip. The model is based on the flexural behavior of the beam and the column determined adopting a concentrated plasticity hinge model including slippage of the main reinforcing bars of the beam. A simplified bilinear moment-axial force domain is assumed to derive the ultimate moment associated with the design axial force. For the joint, a simple truss model is adopted to predict shear strength and panel distortion. Experimental data recently given in the literature referring to the load-deflection response of external RC joints with smooth rebars are utilized to validate the model, showing good agreement. Finally, the proposed model can be considered a useful instrument for preliminary static verification of existing external RC beam-column joints with smooth rebars for both strength and ductility verification.
The present study investigated design parameters of shunt valves and anti-siphon device used to treat patients with hydrocephalus. The shunt valve controls drainage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) through passive deflection of a thin and small diaphragm. The anti-siphon device(ASD) is optionally connected to the valve to prevent overdrainage when the patients are in the standing position. The major design parameters influencing pressure-flow characteristics of the shunt valve were analyzed using ANSYS structural program. Experiments were performed on the commercially available valves and showed good agreements with the computer simulation. The results of the study indicated that predeflection of the shunt valve diaphragm is an important design parameter to determine the opening pressure of the valve. The predeflection was found to depend on the diaphragm tip height and could be adjusted by the diaphragm thickness and its elastic modulus. The major design parameters of the ASD were found to be the clearance (gap height) between the thin diaphragm and the flow orifice. Besides the gap height, the opening pressure of the ASD could be adjusted by the diaphragm thickness, its elastic modulus, area ratio of the diaphragm to the flow orifice. Based on the numerical simulation which considered the increased subcutaneous pressure introduced by the tissue capsule pressure on the implanted shunt valve system, optimum design parameters were proposed for the ASD.

The ingenuity of structural engineers in the field of tall and super-tall buildings has led to some of the most remarkable inventions. During this evolution of structural engineering concepts in the last 100 years, the technical challenges that engineers encountered were extraordinary and the advances were unprecedented. However, as the accomplishments of structural engineers are progressing, the desire for taller and safer structures is also increasing. The diagrid structural system is part of this evolving process as it develops a new paradigm for tall building design combining engineering efficiency and new architectural expression. The first appearances of this type of tall buildings have already been constructed and the interest of both engineering and architectural communities is growing mainly due to the many advantages compared to other structural systems. This paper presents a simple approach on optimizing member sizes for the diagonals of steel diagrid tall buildings. The optimizing method is based on minimizing the volume of the diagonal elements of a diagrid structure. The constraints are coming from the stiffness-based design, limiting the tip deflection of the building to widely accepted regulative limits. In addition, the current paper attempts to open the discussion on the important topic of optimization and robustness for tall buildings and also studies the future of the diagrid structural system.
This paper reports on a proof-of-concept experimental investigation focused on evaluating the vibration characteristics and control of smart hollow cantilever beams filled with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid. The beams are considered to be of uniform viscoelastic materials and modelled as a viscously-damped harmonic oscillator. Electric field-dependent natural frequencies, loss factors and complex moduli are evaluated and compared among three different beams : two types of different volume fraction of ER fluid and one type of different particle concentration of ER fluid by weight. Modal characteristics of the beams are observed in both the absence and the presence of electric potentials. It is also shown that by constructing active control algorithm the removal of structural resonances and the suppression of tip deflection are obtained. This result provides the feasiblility of ER fluids as an active vibration control element.
A GFRP based composite blade was developed for a 750kW wind energy conversion system of type class I. The blade sectional geometry was designed to have a general shell-spar structure. The load cases specified in the IEC61400-1 international specification were considered. For withstanding all relevant extreme loads, the structural analysis for the complete blade was performed using a commercial FEM code. The static load carrying capacity, buckling stability, blade tip deflection and natural frequencies at various rotational speeds were evaluated to satisfy the strength requirements in accordance with the IEC61400-1 and GL Regulations. For designing a lightweight blade, the thickness and the lay-up pattern of the skin-foam sandwich structures were optimized iteratively using the DOT program T-bolts were used for joining the blade root and the hub, which were modeled using a 3D FE volume model. In order to confirm the safety of the root connection, the static stresses of the thick root laminate and the steel. bolts were predicted by taking account of the bolt pretension and the root bending moments. The calculated stresses were compared with the material strengths.
A conveying fluid cantilever pipe subjected to a uniformly distributed tangential follower force and three moving masses upon it constitute this vibrational system. The influences of the velocities of moving masses, the distance between two moving masses, and the uniformly distributed tangential follower force have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a cantilever pipe system by numerical method. The uniformly distributed tangential follower force is considered within its critical value of a cantilever pipe without moving masses, and three constant velocities and three constant distances between two moving masses are also chosen. When the moving masses exist on pipe, as the velocity of the moving mass and the distributed tangential follower force Increases. the deflection of cantilever pipe conveying fluid is decreased, respectively Increasing of the velocity of fluid flow makes the amplitude of a cantilever pipe conveying fluid decrease. After the moving mass passed upon the pipe, the tip- displacement of a pipe is influenced by the coupling effect between interval and velocity of moving mass and the potential energy change of a cantilever pipe. Increasing of the moving mass make the frequency of the cantilever pipe conveying fluid decrease.
