Reinforced concrete (RC) structures require advanced analysis techniques for better estimation of their seismic responses, especially in the case of exhibiting complex three-dimensional coupling of torsional and flexural behaviors. This study focuses on validating a numerical approach for evaluating the seismic response of a three-dimensional unsymmetrical RC structure through the participation in the SMART 2013 international benchmark program. The benchmark program provides material properties, detailed drawings of the RC structure, and input ground motions for the seismic response evaluation. In this study, nonlinear constitutive models of concrete and rebar were formed and local tests were conducted to verify the constitutive models in finite element analysis. Elastic calibration of the finite element model of the SMART 2013 RC structure was performed by comparing numerical and experimental results in modal and linear time history analyses. Using the calibrated model, nonlinear earthquake analysis and seismic fragility analysis were performed to estimate the behavior and vulnerability of the RC structure with various ground motions.

In this paper, the seismic analysis and the modeling techniques have been introduced for seismic performances assessment, when seismic isolation bearings are applied to a real bridge. Nonlinear time-history analysis is carried out using finite element analysis program. El Centro earthquake(1940, N00W) used as earthquake ground excitations. The seismic response of seismically isolated bridge is compared with that of a bridge using conventional Pot Bearings, after obtaining the displacements of the deck, the deformations of the piers, shear forces and moments of the bottoms of the piers. The analytical analysis results show that seismic isolation bearing, especially seismic isolation bearings with sliding mechanism, could reduce earthquake forces.
In this study an innovative rocking zipper braced frame (RZBF) is proposed to overcome the deficiencies of common concentrically braced frames. RZBF is an improved rocking concentrically braced frame which is based on combination of rocking behavior and zipper columns. The base rocking joints and post-tensioned bars provide rocking response and restoring force, respectively. Also, zipper columns distribute the unbalance force over the frame height and reduce the damage concentration. To evaluate seismic performance of RZBF, a comparison study is carried out considering concentrically braced frame, zipper braced frame, rocking concentrically braced frame and RZBF. Thereby, a suite of non-linear time history analyses had been performed on four different types of archetypes with four, six, eight, ten and twelve stories. Frames were designed and non-linear time history analyses were conducted in OpenSees. To compare the seismic behavior of the archetypes, roof drifts, residual roof drifts, story drifts, the forces of first and top story braces, PT bars forces, column uplift and base shears were taken in to consideration. Results illustrate that using RZBF, can reduce the damage due to reduced residual drifts. Zipper columns enhance the seismic performance of rocking systems. As the number of stories increase in the RZBF systems, larger top story braces were needed. So the RZBF system is applicable on low and midrise buildings.
Two types of numerical modeling techniques were considered for the dynamic response of a structure subjected to a ground acceleration. One technique is based on the equation of motion relative to ground motion, and the other is based on the equation of absolute motion of the structure and the ground. The analytic background of the former is well established while the latter has not yet been extensively verified. The latter is called a large mass method, which allocates an appropriate large mass to the ground so that it causes the ground to move according to a given acceleration time history. In this paper, through the use of a single degree-of-freedom spring-mass system, the equations of motion of the two techniques were analyzed and useful theorems are provided on the large mass method. Using simple examples, the numerical results of the two modeling techniques were compared with analytic solutions. It is shown that the theorems provide a clear insight on the large mass method.

The purpose of this paper is to suggest an analytical technique for time history analysis of R/C frame structure using high-strength concrete under seismic loading. Current researches in hysteretic model of structral elements using high-strength concrete are not enough. It is the cause of error that apply hysteretic model of element using normal-strength concrete to the inelastic analysis of high-strength concrete R/C frame structures. In this paper time history analysis using IDARC and DRAIN programs was performed for a 2-bay, 20-story R/C frame structures. Particularly nonlinear dynamic analysis was performed by IDARC program that was applied hysteretic model of structural element using high-strength concrete. centro earthquake 1940 NS waves was used in the analysis and its peak ground accelerations are changed to be 0.12g, 0.25g

In this study. the Modified Response Displacement Method(MRDM) for seismic design of underground box-type structures is proposed. Firstly, to investigate the applicability of the conventional RDM, various parametric studies are performed according to buried depth and soil conditions. Results from the conventional RDM are compared with those of time history analysis in terms of the maximum bending moment and relative displacement. The comparison shows that the velocity response spectrum and the determination method of foundation modulus which significantly influence the accuracy of RDM should be modified. Thus, the modified velocity response spectrum and the new determination method of foundation modulus are proposed under consideration of domestic conditions. In order to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the proposed MRDM numerical analyses are performed according to different parameters such as depth of base rock, height and width of box, buried depth and soil condition. the comparison with the results of the time history analysis verifies the feasibility of the proposed MRDM for the seismic analysis.

A study on the dynamic response of single-storey steel frames equipped with a rotational friction damper is presented. Extensive testing was carried out for assessing the friction pad material, damper unit performance and foaled model frame response to lateral harmonics excitation. Numerical simulations based on non-linear time history analysis were used to evaluate the seismic behaviour of steel frames with rotational frictional damper. It Is demonstrated that using discrete friction dampers of proper parameters to link steel frame can reduce dynamic response significantly.

Dynamic analyses are performed for the wood structure modeled as a SDOF hysteretic system. The hysteresis model presented is a modified version of Takeda model. The comparison between the results of numerical simulation and the experimental results show good agreements in overall tendencies. The response of wood structure subjected to artificially generated earthquakes considering site effects is studied. It appears that the response is very strongly influenced by the intensity and the frequency contents of the ground motion.
The effect of several simplified methods of seismic analysis is estimated. The pounding/contacting of superstructures were considered in the multispan simply supported bridge and the multispan continuous bridge. Although nonlinear time history analysis is generally used for seismic analysis of bridges, many codes including AASHTO propose several simplified analysis methods. AASHTO, however, does not mention pounding. Therefore, the simplified methods may produce results that are different from those of nonlinear time history analysis. This study developed nonlinear analytical models of the two types of bridges mentioned. The models were then modified to the simplified linear models for simplified analysis. The results of the simplified methods were compared with those of nonlinear time history analysis. It was found that including of the pounding/contacting element in the simplified methods generated responses similar to those of the nonlinear time history analysis.

Seismic qualification of instruments and devices mounted on electrical cabinets in a nuclear power plant is performed in this study by means of the in-cabinet response spectrum (ICRS). A simple method and two rigorous methods are proposed in the EPRI NP-7146-SL guidelines for generating the ICRS. The simple method of EPRI can give unrealistic spectra that are excessively conservative in many cases. In the past, the time domain analysis (TDA) methods have been mostly used to analyze a structure. However, the TDA requires the generation of an artificial earthquake input motion compatible to the target response spectrum. The process of generating an artificial earthquake may involve a great deal of uncertainty. In addition, many time history analyses should be performed to increase the accuracy of the results. This study developed a numerical analysis program for generating the ICRS by frequency domain analysis (FDA) method. The developed program was validated by the numerical study. The ICRS calculated by FDA thoroughly matched with those obtained from TDA. This study then confirms that the method it proposes can simply and efficiently generate the ICRS compared to the time domain method.
