Tidal Flushing at the entrance channels of tidal bay or estuary in the central western coast of Korea; Gum River Estuary, Garorim Bay, Asan Bay, and Yeomha Estuary were studied with the recent data of current surveys measured by curret meter at three or five anchored stations along the section for one or two tidal periods at mean spring tide. Equilibrium relationship between tidal prism at mean spring tide and minimum flow area below the mean sea level of the channel in alluvial material was found as of O'Brien's (1931, 1969) study. Bed load transport in the tidal channel is balanced with the tidal flushing ability having a mean velocity of about 0.75m/sec or maximum velocity of about 1.25m/sec for a half tidal cycle over the section at mean spring tide which fairly agree with Brunn's study(1955, 1957). flushing actions for different hydraulic depth( mean depth) and bed material size in the channel were reviewed and found that it depend to a minor extent on the factors.

In this study, the bottom tracking observation in the tidal entrance within Mokpo coast is performed using ADCP in order to estimate net flux of water mass and tidal prism. First of all, observed rawdata was conducted coordinate rotation considering rotation of the cross-section in order to derive the predominant velocity component. And observed rawdata is converted into Sigma coordinate with normalization and blank zone data near the water surface and bottom is interpolated using von-Karman equation. Net flux of water mass is calculated quantitively from the interpolated data, calculated results show that these represent well characteristic of ebb superiority at Mokpo coast as well as change of net flux of water mass with tide. Also, by complementing the definition of tidal prism proposed in past studies, the definition of tidal prism including tidal condition was re-established. Based on the new definition, tidal prism at a tidal entrance using bottom tracking data with ADCP is estimated quantitively for the first time domestically. The results are compared with those for results of previous study, calculated results were in good agreement with previous studies.
In this paper, we report the results of the experimental study on the flow and the mass transport around a square harbor driven by a tidal effect. The model harbor is composed of a uniform water-depth with a straight breakwater. The harbor is connected to the outer ocean by an entrance region having the same shape as the harbor. We investigated two cases, one having another breakwater in the place between the entrance region and the outer ocean, and the other without it, The surface and bottom flow patterns of the model container are visualized by using light particles and dye, respectively. It was shown that the inner harbor and the entrance region have well-organized, large vortical residual flows, and the material transport between the entrance and outer region is however significantly different for two cases; when the breakwater is built between the two regions, the transport is far better than that without it, which is clearly contrary to our common sense that the breakwater would block the dispersion of the materials between the harbor and the outer ocean.

In order to understand the currents around Hampyung Bay and Haeje Peninsula, 2D numerical simulations for tidal currents and tide-induced residual currents were carried out. Dominant semidiurnal tidal currents have reversing form and flow NNE-SSW from northern Haeje Peninsula to Songi Island, E-S at northern Haeje Peninsula and NNW-SSE in Hampyung Bay. In flood, a part of currents from Imja Island~Nakwhol Island flow along the main stream flowing northeast at offshore region and the rest flow into Hampyung Bay flowing east along the northern coast of Haeje Peninsula. In ebb, currents from Hampyung Bay flow west along the northern coast of Haeje Peninsula and run together with the main stream flowing southeast at offshore region. The currents create an anticyclonic circulation in flood and a cyclonic circulation in ebb around Haeje Peninsula including Hampyung Bay. Tidal currents are accumulated on Doripo which located at the entrance of Hampyung Bay and show high current velocities. Tidal currents and tide induced residual currents are weak at the inside of Hampyung Bay which has narrow entrance, shallow water depth and wide intertidal zone. An anticyclonic eddy is formed around Gaksi Island as a result of tide induced residual currents. In northern coast of Haeje Peninsula, slow constant currents flow east. It is expected that a gradual change of sediment and an increase of flushing time for suspended materials are carried by tidal currents occurring in Hampyung Bay.
British Hydraulics research Station's Sparse Scheme was suggested for the solution of two dimensional finite difference tidal equations. 2D-numerical tidal model formed with 4.8km rectangular cells was set up to find out the barrage effects on tidal ranges of some possible areas for tidal power generation in Korea. The comparisons were made hetween spring tidal ranges with and without barrages at the entrance of Asan Bay, Garorim bay, Cheonsu bay and near Incheon Bay. Because of the coarseness of the grid, the model results could not represent the values of changes precisely. However the results show that the tidal amplitude near Incheon Bay increased by about 40cm by setting a barrage and about 50cm increase near the entrance of Asan Bay, respectively. But there were only a few centimeter changes in other areas.

Many suggestions is offered to resolve global warming. Tidal current generation is producing power by switched tidal difference sea water horizontal fluid flow produced by tidal difference using rotor and generator. So, change the angle of inflow condition due to the entrance of efficiency are considered. We therefore investigated three dimensional flow analysis and performance evaluation using commercial ANSYS-CFX code for horizontal axis turbine. Then We also studied three dimensional flow characteristics of a rotating rotor and blade surface streamlines around a rotor. As a result, Cp was highest at TSR 5.5, especially the larger changes in the angle of inflow condition decreased efficiency.
Evaluating the habitat suitability of potential aquaculture sites for cultured species is critical to the sustainable use of tidal flats. This study evaluated the habitat suitability index (HSI) of 12 sites in a tidal flat aquaculture farm at Geunso Bay, Taean, in June 2016. The parameters used to model the suitability index were Growth (water temperature, chlorophyll ${\alpha}$, hydrodynamics), Survival (sediment-sand, mean size, air exposure), and Environment (DO, salinity). The HSI was calculated using weighted and No weighted geometric means. The results showed high habitat suitability at the bay's entrance (HIS; No weighted, 0.60-0.70; weighted, 0.60). Hydrodynamics, air exposure, sediment-sand and mean size are thought to have a significant impact on habitat selection by Manila clams Ruditapes philippinarum. This study explored the optimum habitat for Manila clams by calculating the HSI, providing basic data for tidal flat management.
The relatively tranquil area within the Gogunsan Archipelago was for the first time investigated preliminarily with respect to modern sedimentological processes in association with the emplacement of the Saemangeum Dyke. Basic sedimentological observations, bathymetry and surface sediments were performed twice during 2006-2008 to compare the results and elaborate changes during that period of time. In addition, sediment dynamical observations were carried out with latest measuring equipment along two transects crossing the entrances of the archipelago, including 12-hour onboard measurements of current, suspended sediments, temperature, and salinity. This dataset was used to reveal hydrodynamic characteristics for spring season April-May and to estimate the direction and relative magnitude of the net flux of suspended sediments. There occurred three depositional areas (A to C) within the archipelago, where sediment texture was also changed. In area A, around Yami Island and the dyke, and area B, in the center of the archipelago, surface sediments became coarsened over the two-year period; sand content increased 5% at the expense of silt content in the former, whereas silt content increased 3% at the expense of clay content in the latter. By comparison, area C in the western entrance of the archipelago shows a textural trend of fining with more silt and clay (combined increase of 5%) at the expense of sand content. The accumulation of sediments in areas A and B is attributable to the sand and silt resuspended from the seabed sediments off sector 4 of the dyke during the winter. The origin of the fine materials depositing on area C is uncertain at present, although suspended sediments moving offshore around the archipelago may be one of the most likely candidates for the source. The temperature of seawater increased rapidly from $9-10^{\circ}C$ in April to $14-16^{\circ}C$ in May, whereas salinity remained more or less constant at 31-32%o during the two months. Both of these parameters showed little variations with depth through a tidal cycle, suggesting good mixing of seawater without any help of significant waves. The consistency of salinity during a tidal cycle also indicates no insignificant effects of freshwater from the rivers Mangyung and Donjin emitting through the opening gap near Sinsi Island. The suspended sediment concentrations were higher at the entrance between Sunyu and Sinsi islands than at the entrance between Hoenggyong and Sinsi islands, ranging from 20 and 30 mg/l and from 5 and 15 mg/l, respectively at the sea surface. Although tidal currents were variable across a transect between Sunyu and Sinsi islands, the currents across the entrance between Hoenggyong and Sinsi islands flowed consistently in the same direction all over the transect during a tidal cycle. The estimation of net flux of suspended sediments indicates that suspended sediments are transferred to the Gogunsan Archipelago mainly through a relatively deep trough adjacent to Sinsi Island toward the shallow area around Yami Island and the dyke.
On the basis of the potentials for the growth of local economy and the result of investigation of the ocean space development status, an ocean resort complex was proposed at the small harbor with a parallel beach in the east coast of Korea. As the development plan needs to reclaim the noticeable amount of coastal water area together with the applied shore facilities, it is necessary to analyze their impacts. Here, it was intended to analyze the coastal environment change such as water circulation and bottom change because of the development plan. A horizontal two-dimensional numerical model was applied to represent the combined impact of wind waves and tidal currents to sediment transport in that coastal region. Based on the result of 30 days tidal current simulations considering major four tidal components of $M_2$,$S_2$,$K_1$ and $O_1$ for the upper and lower boundaries and wind field data, bottom change was discussed. Flow velocities were not changed much at outer breakwater of Yangpo harbor. Bottom was eroded by maximum 1.7m after construction but some locations such as lee side of outer breakwater and some islets near the entrance shows isolated accretions. Although it needs more field observations for bottom change in the period of construction, the numerical calculation shows that there exist small impacts near the entrance area and coastal boundaries because of the development.
Tidal and wind-driven currents in Chinhae Bay are investigated using a three-dimensional numerical model developed by Kim et al. (1993). The simulations indicate that the flow patterns in the bay are predominated by the bathymetry, wind and river inflow, and the effects of wind on the flow pattern in the inner bay are much stronger than those in the entrance channel. Computed tidal currents coincide with the field measurements. The horizontal and vertical velocities of tidal and residual currents are strong in the entrance channel of the bay, whereas the velocities are relatively weak in the western and northern parts of the bay. Computed velocity fields show the expected phase difference between the velocities in the surface and those in the bottom layer, and these characteristics are more remarkable during the spring tide than the neap tide. The surface currents in the bay depend strongly on the wind and river inflow, and such phenomena are more remarkable during the neap tide than the spring tide.
