  • This research examined the technical feasibility of composite that had two layers of fiberglass reinforcement to enhance the load carrying capacity of lumber. Specimens were prepared from standard lumber made of thinning crop trees such as Larix kaempferi, Pinus koraiensis, and P. rigida. Results indicated that bending properties, hardness, and wood screw withdrawal load of low density lumber from the P. koraiensis increased as the number of layers of fiberglass reinforcement increased. Composite produced by VARTM method showed the MOE increased in all specimens, while the MOR differed on the location, whether the 2-layers of FRP is put on tensile zone or compressive zone. The MOR of high density lumber from Larix kaempferi and P. rigida decreased when they placed into tensile zone, but low density lumber from P. koraiensis increased in same location. The bending toughness only increased high density lumber of Larix kaempferi as the number of layers of fiberglass reinforcement increased. The technique developed by this study may increase an opportunity to use small diameter log with low density for commercial purposes.

  • The effect of five commercial gums (carboxylmethylcellulose, CMC; guar gum, GG; hydroxypropylmethyl-cellulose, HPMC; locust bean gum, LBG; and xanthan gum) at a concentration of 0.25% on the rheological properties of rice flour (RF) dispersions was investigated in steady and dynamic shear. The steady shear rheological properties showed that RF gum mixture dispersions (5%, w/w) at $25^{\circ}C$ had high shear-thinning flow behavior (n=0.20-0.31) exhibiting a yield stress. Magnitudes of consistency index (K), apparent viscosity (${\eta}_{a,100}$), and Casson yield stress (${\sigma}_{oc}$) of RF-gum mixtures were much higher than those of RF dispersion with no added gum (control). Activation energy values (6.67-10.8 kJ/mole) of RF-gum mixtures within the temperature range of $25-70^{\circ}C$ were lower than that (11.9 kJ/mole) of the control. Dynamic rheological data of log (G', G") versus log frequency (${\omega}$) of RF-gum mixtures had positive slopes (0.15-0.37) with G' greater than G" over most of the frequency range (0.63-63 rad/sec), demonstrating a frequency dependency. Tan ${\delta}$ (G"/G') values of RF-gum mixtures, except for xanthan gum, were much higher than that of the control.

  • This article concerns the forecasting in binomial AR(p) models which is proposed by Wei$\ss$ (2009b) for time series of binomial counts. Our method extends to binomial AR(p) models a recent result by Jung and Tremayne (2006) for integer-valued autoregressive model of second order, INAR(2), with simple Poisson innovations. Forecasts are produced by conditional median which gives 'coherent' forecasts, and we estimate the forecast distributions of future values of binomial AR(p) models by means of a Monte Carlo method allowing for parameter uncertainty. Model parameters are estimated by the method of moments and estimated standard errors are calculated by means of block of block bootstrap. The method is fitted to log data set used in Wei$\ss$ (2009b).

  • Research was conducted in a minirotation plantation with four different planting densities at Tatae-ri, Chongwoon-myon, Yangpyong-gun, Kyonggi-do, to investigate the relation between volume and biomass production. Nine-year-old Alnus hirsuta var. sibirica analyzed to determine volume yield and weight equations for aboveground parts. The results suggest that the most suitable harvesting or thinning period at highly dense plots, more than 6,000 trees per hectare, is five years after planting, and the most fitted regression equation model for estimating aboveground biomass or total tree biomass is $logY=b_0+b_1logd^2h$.

  • The polymer blends of waste poly(vinyl chloride) (RPVC) and waste polyethylene (RPE) were prepared by melt mixing. Their morphologies and rheological properties were investigated and torque changes were also measured. Comparing the torques calculated by the log additivity rule with measured torque changes, the polymer blends showed the large negative deviation behavior (NDB) due to their incompatibility. The shear viscosities of the blends decreased with increasing shear rates, showing shear thinning behavior. The shear viscosity of the blends with compatibilizer was larger than that of the blends without compatibilizer. SEM micrographs of the strands after measurement showed that the domain size of the blends was slightly enlarged with increasing the shear rate. Also, RPVC domain size was larger in the core-sections of the strands from capillary viscometer than in the surface region.

  • The main purpose of this research is to provide scientific informations about standard wage and performance tariffs in forest management with special reference to working time for thinning. To identify relationships between net working time and tree characteristics, three geographically different sample plots were established at Yangsan, Bongpyung and Jinan and 460 oaks, 372 Japanese larches, 232 red pine and 240 pitch pine mere selected at each sample plots. The results of statistical analysis using multiple regression are as follows ; 1. Five independent variables of breast height diameter(DBH), mid-diameter(MD) large end diameter(LD), log-length(L), No. of branches(NOB) were stable independent of worker and tree species. 2. Comparing correlation coefficient of five independent variables, the best predictive variables, breast height diameter and No. of branches, were selected. Breast height diameter and No. of branches were identified as the most important independent variables in terms of effect on the dependent variable of the working time. 3. Comparing coefficient of determination (Rp) and residual mean square (MSEp), the best Linear regression equation for each tree species was selected as follower : $WT=a+b1{\times}NOB+b2{\times}DBF$ 4. Proportion of hang-up time to total working time in thinning were 66% in oak stand, 74%, in Japanese larch stand, 55%, in red pine stand and 52% in pitch pine stand, respectively. 5. Based on the best regression equation, a table of working time was made by strata of number of branches and breast height diameter. 6. Total working time using the best regression equation in Table 5 can be predicted in terms of felling time, limbing time, hang-up time, i.e., total working time increases by 11 to 13 seconds with every 1 centimeter increase in breast height diameter from 7 to 16 centimeter.

  • This study was conducted to identify the effect of kerfing and incising pretreatments on high-temperature drying characteristics of cedar and larch boxed-heart timbers with a cross section of less than 150 mm. The result showed that the pretreatments have made a significant difference regarding surface check and shrinkage. Although the kerfing was suitable as a pretreatment to reduce the occurrence of surface check, the incising was not suitable as a pretreatment since the knives of timber joined together, causing the conversion to the surface checks. The shrinkage showed a significant result that the final moisture content was reduced in the order of incising, kerfing, and kerfing-incising after the drying process based on the pretreatment condition. Twist was more affected by the grain angle than the anisotropy of the juvenile wood, and there was no effect of pretreatments.

  • A melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resin, based on 5 percent melamine addition of the resin solids weight, was synthesized in the laboratory for particleboard (PB) manufacture. Laboratory PBs were made with the MUF resin at three press times (3, 4, 5 min) and two resin application rates (6, 8 percent). Enclosed caul system was used for collecting the exhaust gases materials generated during the hot-pressing of PBs. Exhaust gases materials generated inside the enclosed caul during the hot-pressing of PBs were collected in a controlled air stream. Formaldehyde from the exhaust gases collected was determined per a chromotropic method of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Method 3500. The measurement results showed that formaldehyde emissions during the hot-pressing of PB significantly increased with increasing press time, and MUF resin application rates. PB' performance test results showed that internal bond (IB) of PB made with 3-minute press time exceeded the minimum requirement for KS F 3104 PB type 8.0.
