Fouling has continued to be a problem that hinders the effectiveness of membrane properties. To solve this problem of reducing fouling effects on membrane surface properties, different and innovative types of membrane patterning has been proposed. This article reviews on the progress of patterned membranes and their separation process concerning the fouling effects of membranes. The types of separation processes that utilize the maximum effectiveness of the patterned membranes include nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO), microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), and pervaporation (PV). Using these separation processes have shown and prove to have a major effect on reducing fouling effects, and in addition, they also add beneficial properties to the patterned membranes. Each patterned membrane and their separation processes gave notable results in threshold towards flux, salt rejections, hydrophilicity and much more, but there are also some unsolved cases to be pointed out. In this review, the effects of patterned membrane for separation processes will be discussed.
Luminescent polynorbornene (PNB)/quantum dot (CdSe@ZnS; QD) composite nanorods and nanotubes were successfully prepared using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes of various pore sizes as templates. To protect QDs with high quantum yield from quenching during the phosphoric acid treatment used to remove the AAO templates, chemically stable and optically clear norbornene-maleic anhydride copolymers (P(NB-r-MA)) were employed as a capping agent for QDs. The amine-terminated QDs reacted with maleic anhydride moieties in P(NB-r-MA) to form PNB-grafted QDs. The chemical- and photo-stability of QDs encapsulated with PNB copolymers were investigated by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. By varying the pore size of the AAO templates from 40 to 380 urn, PNB/QD composite nanorods or nanotubes were obtained with a good dispersion of QDs in the PNB matrix.

Chitin, which is obtained mainly from the cuticle of a marine crustacean, has recently aroused great interest in its industrial and biomedical applications. Chitosan, deacetylated form of chitin, appears to be more useful for biomedical application and dehydration of aqueous solutions than chitin, since it has both hydroxyl and amino groups that can be modified easily. Amino groups on chitosan reacts with dialdehyde to form a Schiff base and then crosslinked, and can be easily neutralized with sulfuric acid and metal ions. Polyfunctional metal ions can form a metal-polyelectrolyte complexes with chitosan. Membranes used in modules so far working in industrial pervaporation plants are generally of composite type. This composite membrane was prepared by coating a porous polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane support of definite structure with a thin, dense layer of permselective chitosan. To apply industrial scale pervaporation process for dehydration of aqueous ethanol and isopropanol, chitosan composite membranes were prepared and tested at various conditions.
Membrane disruption by an antimicrobial peptide, protegrin-1 (PG-1), was investigated by measuring the $^2H$ solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectra of 1-palmitoyl-$d_{31}$-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (POPC_$d_{31}$) in the mixture of PG-1 and POPC_$d_{31}$ lipids deposited on thin cover-glass plates. The experimental line shapes of anisotropic $^2H$ SSNMR spectra measured at various peptide-to-lipid (P/L) ratios were simulated reasonably by assuming the mosaic spread of bilayers containing pore structures or the coexistence of the mosaic spread of bilayers and a fast-tumbling isotropic phase. Within a few days of incubation in the hydration chamber, the pores were formed by the peptide in the POPC_$d_{31}$ and POPC_$d_{31}$/cholesterol membranes. However, the formation of the pores was not clear in the POPC_$d_{31}$/1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylglycerol (POPG) membrane. Over a hundred days after hydration, a rapidly rotating isotropic phase increased in the POPC_$d_{31}$ and the POPC_$d_{31}$/cholesterol membranes with the higher P/L ratios, but no isotropic phase appeared in the POPC_$d_{31}$/POPG membrane. Cholesterol added in the POPC bilayer acted as a stabilizer of the pore structure and suppressed the formation of a fast-tumbling isotropic phase.

In this paper, the wrinkling behavior of vertically creased corner-loaded square membranes was studied using geometrically nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The membranes were modeled using shell elements, and the meshes were seeded with semi-random geometrical imperfection to instigate the buckling deformation. A pristine and creased membranes with various initial deployment angles were considered in the analyses and the results were compared. Results showed that local wrinkles initiated near the corner where the higher load was applied, which grew to form a single diagonal global wrinkle as the load ratio increased. It was also found that the local wrinkle initiation and the global wrinkle formation were significantly dependent on the initial deployment angles.

Mechanical properties, including Young's modulus, residual stress and rupture strength, of a thermally evaporated gold film have been measured form a blister test. In a theoretical study, the priniple of minimum potential energy and that of virtual work have been applied to the pressurized circular membrane problem, and load-deflection relations have been derived for typical membrane deflection mode of spheroidal shape. In an experimental study, circular gold membranes of 4800 A-thickness and 3.5mm diameter were fabricated by the silicon electropolishing technique. Mecahnical properties of the thin gold films were deduced from the load-deflection curves obtained by the blister test, Young's moduli, obtianed from blister test, have been in the range of 45-70 GPa, while those of bulk gold have been in the range of 78-80 GPa. Residual stresses in the evaporated gold films have been measured as 28-110MPa in tension, The rupture strength of the gold film has turned out to be almost equal to that of dental gold alloy (310-380MPa). It has been demonstrated that the present specimen fabrication method and blister test apparatus have been effective for simultaneous measurement of Young's modulus, residual stress and repture strength of thin solid films. Especially, the electropolishing technique employed here has provided a simple and practical way to fabricate thin membranes in a circular or an arbitrary shape, which could not be obtained by the conventional anisotropic silicon mecromachining technique.
In this study, acetylated methyl cellulose (AMC) was successfully used as a support layer of thin film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membrane. A selective polyamide active layer, interfacially polymerized, was coated on top of various substrate layers. The structure and performance of the TFC FO membrane based on the AMC substrate were compared with those of TFC FO membranes with different polymeric support layers. The experimental results showed that the AMC FO membrane performance was better than other FO membranes due to its characteristic morphology and lower back diffusion rate of salts.
Carbon membrane materials have received considerable attention for the gas separation including hydrocarbon mixture of ingredients of the volatile organic compounds(VOCs) because they possess their higher selectivity, permeability, and thermal stability than the polymeric membranes. The use of activated carbon membranes makes it possible to separate continuously the VOCs mixture by the selective adsorption-diffusion mechanism which the condensable components are preferentially adsorbed in to the micropores of the membrane. The activated carbon hollow fiber membranes with uniform adsorptive micropores on the wall of open pores and the surface of the membranes have been fabricated by the carbonization of a thin film of phenolic resin deposited on porous alumina hollow fiber membrane. Oxidation, carbonization, and activation processing variables were controlled under different conditions in order to improve the separation characteristics of the activated carbon membrane. Properties of activated carbon hollow fiber membranes and the characterization of a gas permeation by pyrolysis conditions were studied. As the result, the activated carbon hollow fiber membranes with good separation capabilities by the molecular size mechanism as well as selective adsorption on the pores surface followed by surface diffusion effective in the recovery hydrocarbons have been obtained. Therefore, these activated carbon membranes prepared in this study are shown as promising candidate membrane for separation of VOCs.
