  • In this paper, an efficient and simple refined theory is presented for buckling analysis of functionally graded plates. The theory, which has strong similarity with classical plate theory in many aspects, accounts for a quadratic variation of the transverse shear strains across the thickness and satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factors. The mechanical properties of functionally graded material are assumed to vary according to a power law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. Governing equations are derived from the principle of minimum total potential energy. The closed-form solutions of rectangular plates are obtained. Comparison studies are performed to verify the validity of present results. The effects of loading conditions and variations of power of functionally graded material, modulus ratio, aspect ratio, and thickness ratio on the critical buckling load of functionally graded plates are investigated and discussed.

  • Asymmetrical rolling was performed with different working roll speeds of upper and lower rolls. In order to promote the shear deformation during asymmetrical rolling, various deformation parameters of initial sheet thickness, rolling reduction, roll speed ratio and roll radius are considered. The evolution of texture during asymmetrical rolling was shown by the calculation of orientation distribution function (ODF). The effect of deformation parameters on shea. deformation were investigated by simulations with the finite element method (FEM). Asymmetrical rolling gave rise to the development of pronounced strain gradients throughout the thickness layers which resulted in the formation of strong texture gradients in the sheet.

  • Joining of AIN ceramics to W and Cu by active-metal brazing method was tried with use of (Ag-Cu)-Ti alloy as insert-metal. Joints were produced under various conditions of temperature, holding time and Ti-content in (Ag-Cu) alloy Reaction and microstructural development in bonded interface were investigated through observation and analysis by SEM/EDS, EPMA and XRD. Joint strengths were measured by shear test. Bonded interface consists of two layers: an insert-metal layer of eutectic Ag- and Cu-rich phases and a reaction layer of TiN. Thickness of reaction layer increases with bonding temperature, holding time and Ti-content of insert-metal. It was confirmed that the growth of reaction layer is a diffusion-controlled process. Activation energy for this process was 260 KJ/mol which is lower than that for N diffusion in TiN. Maximum shear strength of 108 MPa and 72 MPa were obtained for AIN/W and AIN/Cu joints, respectively. Relationship between processing variables, joint strength and thickness of reaction layer was also explained.

  • Particle displacement distributions of the fundamental thickness shear vibration mode and overtone modes in an energy-trapped single resonator and an energy-trapped double acoustically coupled filter were calculated. The effects of the width of a pair of partial eletrodes and the magnitude of the plate back of the resonator on the particle displacement distributions of its symmetric vibration mode and anti-symmetric vibration mode were investigated. • The influence of rolling draughts on the formation of through-thickness textures in aluminum 5000X sheet was investigated by X-ray texture measurements and microstructure observations. In order to intensify the deformation inhomogeneities, cold rolling was performed without lubrication. Applying a large draught gave rise to the formation of the shear texture at the surface, whereas a normal plane strain testure formed at the surface after deformation with a small draught. The orientation density along the $\beta$-fiber orientations which developed in the center layer of the rolled specimen was also dependent on the strain gradients in a roll gap. Upon annealing, the deformed substructure of sample surfaces was transformed into a fine grained recrystallized microsturcture through extended recovery reaction. However, coarse grains developed after the discontinuous recrystallization which gave rise to the development of the Cube-texture.

  • The ultimate bearing capacity and failure mechanism of square footings resting on a sand layer over clay soil have been investigated numerically by performing a series of three-dimensional non-linear finite element analyses. The parameters investigated are the thickness of upper sand layer, strength of sand, undrained shear strength of lower clay and surcharge effect. The results obtained from finite element analyses were compared with those from previous design methods based on limit equilibrium approach. The results proved that the parameters investigated had considerable effect on the ultimate bearing capacity and failure mechanism occurring. It was also shown that the thickness of upper sand layer, the undrained shear strength of lower clay and the strength of sand are the most important parameters affecting the type of failure will occur. The value of the ultimate bearing capacity could be significantly different depending on the limit equilibrium method used.

  • Flow visualization technique incorporating photochromic dye is used to study the flow characteristics of the gravity driven laminar wavy film. The film thickness and wave speed are successfully measured by flow visualization. As the inclination angle increases, the waves have higher peaks and lower substrate thickness. The measured cross stream velocity at the free surface is up to 10% of stream wise velocity, which shows enhanced mixing in the lump of the film. The measured stream wise velocity profiles are close to parabolic profile near the substrate and the peak but show significant velocity defect near the rear side of the wave. The measured wall shear rate distributions show good agreement with the previous workers' numerical results.

  • In the FE analysis of sheet metal forming, efficient results can be obtained by using shell elements rather than using solid elements. However, shell elements have some limitations to describe three-dimensional material laws. In the recent years, solid-shell element, which has only translational degree of freedom like solid element, has been presented. The assumed nature strain (ANS) and enhanced assumed strain (EAS) methods can be used to remove several solid-shell locking problems. In this paper, ANS method was used for diminish transverse shear locking and EAS method for thickness locking. Using the element, the steel pipe making process from flat plate analyzed effectively, which is including bending and welding.

  • The dynamic propagation of an interface crack between two dissimilar functionally graded layers under anti-plane shear is analyzed using the integral transform method. The properties of the functionally graded layers vary continuously along the thickness. A constant velocity Yoffe-type moving crack is considered. Fourier transform is used to reduce the problem to a dual integral equation, which is then expressed to a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind. Numerical values on the dynamic energy release rate (DERR) are presented. Followings are helpful to increase of the resistance of the interface crack propagation of FGM: a) increase of the gradient of material properties; b) increase of the material properties from the interface to the upper and lower free surface; c) increase of the thickness of FGM layer. The DERR increases or decreases with increase of the crack moving velocity.

  • In this paper, an asymptotic method is employed to formulate nano- or micro-beams based on strain gradient elasticity. Although a basic theory for the strain gradient elasticity has been well established in literature, a systematic approach is relatively rare because of its complexity and ambiguity of higher-order elasticity coefficients. In order to systematically identify the strain gradient effect, an asymptotic approach is adopted by introducing the small parameter which represents the beam geometric slenderness and/or the internal atomistic characteristic. The approach allows us to systematically split the two-dimensional strain gradient elasticity into the microscopic one-dimensional through-the-thickness analysis and the macroscopic one-dimensional beam analysis. The first-order beam problem turns out to be different from the classical elasticity in terms of the bending stiffness, which comes from the through-the-thickness strain gradient effect. This subsequently affects the second-order transverse shear stress in which the surface shear stress exists. It is demonstrated that a careful derivation of a first strain gradient elasticity embraces "Gurtin-Murdoch traction" as the surface effect of a one-dimensional Euler-Bernoulli-like beam model.
