This paper describes stress analysis and fatigue limit evaluation of plate with V-notch and hole-notch by lock-in infrared thermography. Temperature variation of a specimen under cyclic loading is negatively proportional to the sum of principle stress change and the surface temperature measured by infrared camera is calculated to the stress of notch specimens, based on thermoelastic equation. And also, fatigue limitation can be evaluated by the change of intrinsic energy dissipation. Fatigue limitation of two notch specimens is evaluated as 164 MPa and 185 MPa, respectively and the stress measured by Lock-in infrared Thermography show good agreement within 10% error.

In this paper, an efficient higher-order shear deformation theory is presented to analyze thermomechanical bending of temperature-dependent functionally graded (FG) plates resting on an elastic foundation. Further simplifying supposition are made to the conventional HSDT so that the number of unknowns is reduced, significantly facilitating engineering analysis. These theory account for hyperbolic distributions of the transverse shear strains and satisfy the zero traction boundary conditions on the surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factors. Power law material properties and linear steady-state thermal loads are assumed to be graded along the thickness. Nonlinear thermal conditions are imposed at the upper and lower surface for simply supported FG plates. Equations of motion are derived from the principle of virtual displacements. Analytical solutions for the thermomechanical bending analysis are obtained based on Fourier series that satisfy the boundary conditions (Navier's method). Non-dimensional results are compared for temperature-dependent FG plates and validated with those of other shear deformation theories. Numerical investigation is conducted to show the effect of material composition, plate geometry, and temperature field on the thermomechanical bending characteristics. It can be concluded that the present theory is not only accurate but also simple in predicting the thermomechanical bending responses of temperature-dependent FG plates.

Thermal energy generated because of the friction between the disc and pad is transferred to both sides and causes thermal expansion of the material, which affects the contact pressure distribution. This phenomenon, which is called thermoelastic instability (TEI), is affected by the natural mode of a disc. TEI results in the formation of a hot spot and causes hot judder vibrations. In this study, three-dimensional analysis of the hot judder of a ventilated disc for automotives was performed by using the commercial finite element analysis program, SAMCEF. The intermediate processor based on a staggered approach was used to exchange the result data of the mechanical and thermal model. The hot spot was formed on the surface of the disc, and the number of hot spots was compared with the natural mode of the disc.

This paper is for the first essential study on the development of unified finite element formulations for solving problems related to the dynamics/thermoelastics behavior of solids. In the first part of formulations, the finite element method is based on the introduction of a new quantity defined as heat displacement, which allows the heat conduction equations to be written in a form equivalent to the equation of motion, and the equations of coupled thermoelasticity to be written in a unified form. The equations obtained are used to express a variational formulation which, together with the concept of generalized coordinates, yields a set of differential equations with the time as an independent variable. Using the Laplace transform, the resulting finite element equations are described in the transform domain. In the second, the Laplace transform is applied to both the equation of heat conduction derived in the first part and the equations of motions and their corresponding boundary conditions, which is referred to the transformed equation. Selections of interpolation functions dependent on only the space variable and an application of the weighted residual method to the coupled equation result in the necessary finite element matrices in the transformed domain. Finally, to prove the validity of two approaches, a comparison with one finite element equation and the other is made term by term.
A theory developed in Part I has been applied to calculate effective elastic and thermoelastic moduli of particle-strengthened, unidirectionally fiber-reinforced, and layered composites. For the unidirectional fiber composites the effect of fiber aspect ratio is taken into account. The analytical solutions obtained to the effective elastic moduli are compared with some of existing expressions and the following results are found. The effective bulk and shear moduli of the particle strengthened composites coincide with Korner's expressions, which correspond with the lower bounds of Hanshin and Shtrikman. The same expressions as the lower bounds of Hill and Hanshin are obtained for five independent moduli of the aligned continuous fiber composites, four of which coincide with Hanshin and Rosen's exact solutions for 'composite cylinder assemblage'.
In this paper, a new application of a four variable refined plate theory to analyze the nonlinear bending of functionally graded plates exposed to thermo-mechanical loadings, is presented. This recent theory is based on the assumption that the transverse displacements consist of bending and shear components in which the bending components do not contribute toward shear forces, and similarly, the shear components do not contribute toward bending moments. The derived transverse shear strains has a quadratic variation across the thickness that satisfies the zero traction boundary conditions on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using shear correction factors. The material properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the plate according to a power-law distribution of the volume fraction of the constituents. The solutions are achieved by minimizing the total potential energy. The non-linear strain-displacement relations in the von Karman sense are used to derive the effect of geometric non-linearity. It is concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the nonlinear bending behavior of functionally graded plates.

The GMT-Consortium Large Earth Finder (G-CLEF) is the first instrument for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). G-CLEF is a fiber feed, optical band echelle spectrograph that is capable of extremely precise radial velocity measurement. G-CLEF Flexure Control Camera (FCC) is included as a part in G-CLEF Front End Assembly (GCFEA), which monitors the field images focused on a fiber mirror to control the flexure and the focus errors within GCFEA. FCC consists of an optical bench on which five optical components are installed. The order of the optical train is: a collimator, neutral density filters, a focus analyzer, a reimager and a detector (Andor iKon-L 936 CCD camera). The collimator consists of a triplet lens and receives the beam reflected by a fiber mirror. The neutral density filters make it possible a broad range star brightness as a target or a guide. The focus analyzer is used to measure a focus offset. The reimager focuses the beam from the collimator onto the CCD detector focal plane. The detector module includes a linear translator and a field de-rotator. We performed thermoelastic stress analysis for lenses and their mounts to confirm the physical safety of the lens materials. We also conducted the global structure analysis for various gravitational orientations to verify the image stability requirement during the operation of the telescope and the instrument. In this article, we present the opto-mechanical detailed design of G-CLEF FCC and describe the consequence of the numerical finite element analyses for the design.
The five-story and seven-story stone pagodas at Cheongnyangsaji temple site in Gongju are located under the Sambulbong peak of Gyeryongsan mountain, and are known to have been built of the middle in Goryeo dynasty. As the two pagodas in which two types of Baekje stone pagoda coexist in one era, their historical and academic value are recognized. The seven-story pagoda was overturned by robbery in 1944, and as a result, the five-story pagoda was tilted. Although the two pagodas were restored in 1961, structural instability was continuously raised. In this study, measurement data accumulated from May 2021 to March 2022, and seasonal characteristics were reviewed, and the micro behavior of pagodas were analyzed according to temperature and precipitation during the same period. As a result, the micro thermoelastic behavior was repeated according to the daily temperature change in all sensors, and both the slope and the displacement showed microscale behavior. In the inclinometer, moisture containing the surface and inside of the stones repeated expansion and contraction due to temperature change, showing the micro movements. In particular, the upper part of the five-story pagoda moved up to 3.89° to the northwest, and the seven-story pagoda tilted up to 0.078° to the northeast. The maximum displacements were recorded as 0.127 and 0.149 mm in the five-story and the seven-story pagoda, respectively. These values tended to return to the original position at the end of the measurement, but did not recover completely, indicating a state requiring precise monitoring. The result obtained through the study can be used as basic data for the stable conservation of the two stone pagodas. Based on the behavioral characteristics considering various environmental factors should be analyzed, and the preventive conservation through the maintenance of measurement system built this time should be continued.
