  • The flame image processing and it's analysis system has been developed for optimal coal firing of thermal power plant, especially for reducing NOx and safe operations. We aimed at gaining the relationship between burner flame image, emissions of NOx and LOI(Loss on ignition) in furnace by utilizing the flame image processing methods. And the relationship determines quantitatively the conditions of combustion on the individual burners. The test was conducted on Samchonpo thermal power plant #4 unit(560MW) of KOSEP which has 24 burners. The system simplified the burner adjustment works in accordance with the real time trending of flame behavior like NOx profiles and unburned carbon profiles for individual burners. But, This kind of conventional method increases the cost as the number of burner are increased. Also there is a difficulty to measure exhausted gas of each burner because of measurement errors. This paper intends to propose the useful "Flame Monitoring System" that can find Low NOX and LOI at the upper furnace and to compare with the conventional System.

  • A Superconducting High Gradient Magnetic Separation (HGMS) system is proposed for treatment of feed-water in thermal power plant [1]. This is a method to remove the iron scale from feed-water utilizing magnetic force. One of the issues for practical use of HGMS system is to extend continuous operation period. In this study, we designed the magnetic filters by particle trajectory simulation and HGMS experiments in order to solve this problem. As a result, the quantity of magnetite captured by each filter was equalized and filter blockage was prevented. A design method of the magnetic filter was proposed which is suitable for the long-term continuous scale removal in the feed-water system of the thermal power plant.

  • Loop thermosyphon(LTS) has many good characteristics such as low thermal resistance, no power consumption, noiseless operation and small size. To investigate the overall performance of LTS, we have performed various experiments varying three parameters: input power of the heater, working fluid(water, ethanol, FC3283) and filling ratio of the working fluid. At a combination of these parameters, temperature measurements are made at many locations of the LTS. The temperature difference between the evaporator and the condenser is used to obtain the thermal resistance. In addition, flow visualization using a high speed camera is carried out. The thermal resistance is not constant. It is lower at higher input power, which is one of the distinct merits of LTS. Flow instabilities are frequently observed when changing the working fluid, the input power and the filling ratio. The results show that the LTS can be readily put into practical use. Future practical application in electronic cooling is recommended.

  • Scroll compressor has been used extensively for refrigeration since the early 1980's for its improved efficiency, greater reliability, smoother operation, lower noise and vibration. And also, nowadays, the scroll mechanism is used for expander even though in niche market yet. But scroll expander has not been used for high-temperature and high-pressure gas, because the continuous expansion of the gas causes a wide range of temperature distribution over the whole scroll wrap that leads to differential thermal expansion of scroll elements, which results in system vibrations, noise and efficiency losses. For the scroll expander to produce power more efficiently, all of radial and radial clearances between scroll wrap must be the same. In order to reduce differential thermal expansion in addition to improvements in thermal efficiency and specific power, we propose a scroll expander with heating structure. Heat-pipe heating structure is considered as the most effective method to heat the scroll expander at a uniform temperature. This paper includes some results of preliminary study of the scroll expander with heating structure and proposals of their systems for power generation and refrigeration.

  • In order to enhance the dynamic and interactive simulation capability of a system thermal hydraulic code for nuclear power plant, applicability of flow network models in SINDA/FLUIN $T^{™}$ has been tested by modeling feedwater system and coupling to DSNP which is one of a system thermal hydraulic simulation code for a pressurized heavy water reactor. The feedwater system is selected since it is one of the most important balance of plant systems with a potential to greatly affect the behavior of nuclear steam supply system. The flow network model of this feedwater system consists of condenser, condensate pumps, low and high pressure heaters, deaerator, feedwater pumps, and control valves. This complicated flow network is modeled and coupled to DSNP and it is tested for several normal and abnormal transient conditions such turbine load maneuvering, turbine trip, and loss of class IV power. The results show reasonable behavior of the coupled code and also gives a good dynamic and interactive simulation capabilities for the several mild transient conditions. It has been found that coupling system thermal hydraulic code with a flow network code is a proper way of upgrading simulation capability of DSNP to mature nuclear plant analyzer (NPA).

  • In this paper, we Investigated effects on impurities and water of semiconductive shield through a thermal, mechanical, and absorption experiment to estimate performance of insulating materials in power cable. Specimens had been prepared 22[kV], 154[kV] XLPE power cables and then were made of sheet form with XLPE and semiconductive shield with dimension of 0.4[mm] ~1.2[mm] of thickness from power cable. Heat capacity $({\Delta}H)$ and glass trasition temperature (Tg) of XLPE sheet were measured by DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry). We could know that thermal stabilities of 154[kV] are more excellent than 22[kV] from this experimental result. The strain of mechanical properties in 22[kV] and 154[kV] XLPE was 486[%], 507[%] and stress was 1.74$[kgf/mm^2]$, 1.80$[kgf/mm^2]$. The absorption contents of existing semiconductive shield were measured 710[ppm] to 1,090[ppm], and semiconductive shield of 22[kV] cable was measured 14,750[ppm] to 24,780[ppm]. We thermal and mechanical properties of 154[kV] could know more excellent than 22[kV] from this experimental result.

  • Comprehensive condition monitoring of large industry systems such as nuclear power plants (NPPs) is essential for safety and maintenance. In this study, we developed novel system-scale diagnostic technology based on deep-learning and IR thermography that can efficiently and cost-effectively classify system conditions using compact Raspberry Pi and IR sensors. This diagnostic technology can identify the presence of an abnormality or accident in whole system, and when an accident occurs, the type of accident and the location of the abnormality can be identified in real-time. For technology development, the experiment for the thermal image measurement and performance validation of major components at each accident condition of NPPs was conducted using a thermal-hydraulic integral effect test facility with compact infrared sensor modules. These thermal images were used for training of deep-learning model, convolutional neural networks (CNN), which is effective for image processing. As a result, a proposed novel diagnostic was developed that can perform diagnosis of components, whole system and accident classification using thermal images. The optimal model was derived based on the modern CNN model and performed prompt and accurate condition monitoring of component and whole system diagnosis, and accident classification. This diagnostic technology is expected to be applied to comprehensive condition monitoring of nuclear power plants for safety.

  • Thermal performance of a heat sink for an inverter power stack was analyzed in terms of array and installation location of an Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT). Thermal flow around the heat sink was calculated with a numerical model that could simulate forced convection. Thermal performance was calculated depending on the array and location of high- and low-power IGBTs considering the maximum temperature of IGBT. The optimum array and installation location were found and causes were analyzed based on results of numerical analysis. For the numerical analysis, experiment design considered the installation location of IGBT, ratio of heat generation rates of high- and low-power IGBTs, and velocity of the inlet air as design variables. Based on numerical results, a correlation that could calculate thermal performance of the heat sink was suggested and the maximum temperature of the IGBT could be predicted depending on the installation method.

  • Because of the novel characteristics such as chemical stability, hardness, electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity, diamond-like carbon (DLC) film is a suitable material for the passivation layers. For this purpose, using the PECVD, DLC films were synthesized at room temperature. The adhesion and the hardness of the DLC films deposited on Si an SiO2 substrate were measured. The resistivity of 5.3$\times$$10^8$$\Omega$.cm was measured by automatic spreading resistance probe analysis method. The thermal conductivities of different DLC films were measured and compared with that of phospho silicate glass (PSG) film which is commonly used as passivation layers. The thermal conductivity of DLC film was improved by increasing hydrogen flow rate up to 90 sccm and was better than that of PSG film. The patterning techniques of the DLC film developed using the RIE and the lift-off method to form 5$\mu\textrm{m}$ line. Finally, the thermal characteristics of the power transistor with the DLC film as passiviation layer was analyzed.
