The destructive method is reliable and widely used for the estimation of material degradation but it have time-consuming and a great difficulty in preparing specimens from in-service industrial facilities. Therefore, the estimation of degraded structural materials used at high temperature by nondestructive evaluation such as electric resistance method, replica method, Barkhausen noise method, electro-chemical method and ultrasonic method are strongly desired. In this study, various nondestructive evaluation(NDE) parameters of the Barkhausen noise method, such as MPA(Maximum Peak Amplitude), RMS, IABNS(Internal Area of Barkhausen Noise on Signal) and average amplitude of frequency spectrum are investigated and correlated with thermal damage level of 2.25cr-1.0Mo steel using wavelet analysis. Those parameters tend to increase while thermal degradation proceeds. It also turns out that the wavelet technique can help to reduce experimental false call in data analysis.
Today's microprocessor designs are not free from temperature as well as power consumption. As processor technology scales down, an on-chip circuitry increases power density, which incurs excessive temperature (hotspot) problem. To tackle thermal problems cost-effectively, Dynamic Thermal Management (DTM) has been suggested: DTM techniques have benefits of thermal reliability and cooling cost. However, they require trade-off between thermal control and performance loss. This paper proposes a dual integer register file structure to minimize the performance degradation due to DTM invocations. In on-chip thermal control, the most important functional unit is an integer register file. It is the hotspot unit because of frequent read and write data accesses. The proposed dual integer register file migrates read data accesses by adding an extra register file, thus reduces per-unit dynamic power dissipation. As a result, the proposed structure completely eliminates localized hotspots in the integer register file, resulting in much less performance degradation by average 13.35% (maximum 18%) improvement compared to the conventional DTM architecture.
Degradation of polymer additives is enhanced at higher temperature of the test solutions. The degradation of Co-polymer solution was investigated experimentally in a closed loop at the temperature of 6$0^{\circ}C$ and 8$0^{\circ}C$ with various polymer concentrations of 100, 200, 400, 600 ppm in order to see the effect of temperature and polymer concentration with time. The degradation effect were found to be more dependent on temperature than mechanical shear. The friction factor versus Reynolds number curves show that in the range of Reynolds number number 50,000~150,000 the friction was decreased as Reynolds number increased and the friction of solution at low temperature approached to Virk's maximum drag reduction asymptote. For constant flowrates and temperatures the degradation effect was found to be less likely in higher polymer concentration. For constant flowrates and polymer concentrations the degradation rates are affected mainly by temperature. At the temperature of 8$0^{\circ}C$ and polymer concentration of 100 ppm, drag reduction effect was disappeared after 4 hours. However, this thermal degradation could be avoided with additional materials such as surfactants which are supposed to enhance the bonding forces between polymer molecules.
This paper presents hot spot behaviors on the rubbing surface of disk-pad type brake by using coupled thermal-mechanical analysis technique. The height of micro-asperity on the rubbing surface is usually 2∼3 ${\mu}$m in practical disk brakes. Non-uniform micro-contacts between the disk and the rigid friction pads lead to high local temperature distributions, which may cause the material degradation, and develop hot spots, thermal cracks, and brake system failure at the end for a braking period. The friction temperatures on the rubbing surface of disk brakes in which are strongly related to the hot spot and thermal related wears are rapidly concentrated on the micro-contact asperities during braking. The computed FEM results show that the contact stress, friction induced temperature and thermal strain are highly concentrated on the rubbing micro-contact asperities even though the braking speed and force are small during the braking period. This hot spot may directly produce the slippage and various thermal wears on the brake-rubbing surface.

Fretting is a kind of surface degradation mechanism observed in mechanical components and structures. The fretting damage decreases in 50-70% of the plain fatigue strength. This may be observed in the fossil power plant and the nuclear power plant used in special environments and various loading conditions. The thermal degradation of material is observed when the heat resisting steel is exposed for long period time at the high temperature. In the present study, the degraded 1Cr-0.5Mo steel used for long period time at high temperature (about 515$^{\circ}C$) and artificially reheat-treated materials are prepared. These materials are used for evaluating an effect of thermal aging on the fretting fatigue behavior. Through the experiment, it is found that the fretting fatigue endurance limit of the reheat-treated 1Cr-0.5Mo steel decreased about 46% from the non-fretting fatigue endurance limit, while the fretting fatigue endurance limit of the degraded 1Cr-0.5Mo steel decreased about 53% from the non-fretting fatigue endurance limit. The maximum value of fatigue endurance limit difference is observed as 57%(244 MPa) between the fretting fatigue of degraded material and non-fretting fatigue of reheat-treated material. These results can be a basic data to a structural integrity evaluation of heat resisting steel considered to thermal degradation effect.
Thermal stability of aspartame was investigated as affected by the temperature and pH during heating. The thermal stability study of aspartame heated at $60-100^{\circ}C$ showed that aspartame was degraded more rapidly as the heating temperature increased. Activation energy for thermal degradation was 20.77 kcal/mol. The thermal degradation products, a diketopiperazine (DKP) and ${\alpha}$-aspartylphenylalanine (${\alpha}$-AP), were rapidly increased while the aspartame concentration decreased. The pH change of aspartame solution was rapidly decreased during initial three hours of heating and more significant at high temperature. In the pH range ()』 3-7, aspartame was the most unstable at pH 7 and stable at pH 4. The thermal degradation rate contants were 0.827 at pH 7, 0.286 at pH 6, 0.072 at pH 5 and 0.045 at pH 4 during initial heating at $100^{\circ}C$.

In SMA(shape memory alloy), the degradation by fatigue is one of the most important problems to be overcome, when SMA is used for robot-actuator material. The actuator is operated repeatitively for long time and its repeating operation develops the fatigue degradation of SMA. The fatigue degradation changes the transformation temperature and deformation behavior and results in inaccurate operation control of robot. Accordingly, the changing behavior of transformation temperature and deformation which results from repeating operation is to be investigated in advance and the scheme to resolve those problems have to be made for the design of actuator. In this study, the fatigue tests were carried out on SMA specimens prepared to have different condition of aging time and pre-strain with the direct-current heating-cooling method, which was a general method of operation in robot actuators. The behavior of transformation temperature and deformation were examined and analyzed in each specimen and the study was performed to establish the optimistic manufacturing condition of SMA against the fatigue degradation.

In this paper, we investigated impurities content, absorption properties, and thermal properties showing by changing the content of carbon black which is semiconductive materials for underground power transmission. Specimens were made of sheet form with the three of existing resins and the nine of specimens for measurement. Impurities content of specimens and absorption properties were measured by ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer) and Karl Fisher. And high temperature, heat degradation initiation temperature, and heat weight loss were measured by TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis). The dimension of measurement temperature was 0$[^{\circ}]$ to 800$[^{\circ}]$, and rising temperature was 10$[^{\circ}/min]$. Impurities content was highly measured according to increasing the content of carbon black from this experimental result also absorption amount was increased according to these properties. Specially, impurities content values of the A1 and A2 of existing resins were measured more than 4000[ppm]. Heat degradation initiation temperature from the TGA results was decreased according to increasing the content of carbon black. All over, heat stabilities were EEA>EBA>pEVA. That is, heat stabilities of EVA containing the weak VA(vinyl acetate) against heat was measured the lowest.
The first stage blade of a gas turbine was operated under a severe environment which included both $1300^{\circ}C$ hot gas and thermal stress. To obtain high efficiency, a thermal barrier coating (TBC) and an internal cooling system were used to increase the firing temperature. The TBC consists of multi-layer coatings of a ceramic outer layer (top coating) and a metallic inner layer (bond coat) between the ceramic and the substrate. The top and bond coating layer respectively act as a thermal barrier against hot gas and a buffer against the thermal stress caused by the difference in the thermal expansion coefficient between the ceramic and the substrate. Particularly, the bondcoating layer improves the resistance against oxidation and corrosion. An inter-diffusion layer is generated between the bond coat and the substrate due to the exposure at a high temperature and the diffusion phenomenon. A thickness measurement result showed that the bond coat of the suction side was thicker than that of the pressure side. The thickest inter-diffusion zone was noted at SS1 (Suction Side point 1). A chemical composition analysis of the bond coat showed aluminum depletion around the inter-diffusion layer. In this study, we evaluated the properties of the bond coat and the degradation of the coating layer used on a $1300^{\circ}C$-class gas turbine blade. Moreover, the operation temperature of the blade was estimated using the Arrhenius equation and this was compared with the result of a thermal analysis.
In this study, the curing kinetics and thermal degradation of underfill were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermo gravimetry analysis (TGA). The mechanical and thermal properties of underfill were characterized using dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA). Also, we presented on underfill dispensing process using Prostar tool. The non-isothermal DSC scans at various heating rates, the exothermic reaction peak became narrower with increasing the heating rate. The thermal degradation of underfill was composed of two processes, which involved chemical reactions between the degrading polymer and oxygen from the air atmosphere. The results of fluidity phenomena were simulated using Star CD program, the fluidity of the underfills with lower viscosity was faster.
