  • The number of North Korean refugees residing in the Republic of Korea (South) has reached 17,000, and this number is expected to exceed 20,000 (North Korean Supporter's Association, 2009). Refugees have developed improper dietary habits while hiding and escaping North Korea. They have also developed preferences for exotic food. This thesis attempts determine the changes in Korean food. This study also describes the view on South Korean food by North Korean refugees. According to our survey, women refugees had better dietary habits than men. Moreover, women and those in their 40's showed a tendency to choose food based on quality over quantity. Both men and women refugees responded that they cook food based on North Korean recipes. Those who view their current financial status as average or higher stated that South Korean food is tastier than North Korean food. Those whose financial status among North Koreans was average or higher when they lived in North Korea appreciated the splendor and beauty of South Korean food more. The results of this study are expected to assist in determining the differences in dietary habits between those from the North compared to Koreans living in the Republic of Korea. Therefore, studies between South and North Korean food should continue.

  • Tintinnid species distribution has been monitored in the northern East China Sea (ECS) in the summer of 2006 through 2011. This is used to understand the water mass movements in the northern ECS. The warm oceanic tintinnid species had largely spread in 2007 in the area, indicating that there was greater warm water extension into the northern ECS. However the extension of neritic water within the Changjiang diluted water mass has strengthened in 2008 and 2010 because the neritic species distribution had relatively grown in both years. These annual results based on the biological indicators of tintinnid species are well matched with the salinity change in the area. The warm oceanic species, Dadayiella ganymedes had frequently occurred over the study years and had shown a significant relationship with the salinity change. This is valuable as a key stone species for monitoring the intrusion of the Kuroshio within the northern ECS. Information from tintinnid biological indicators can support physical oceanography data to confirm ambiguous water mass properties.

  • An individual's food-related personal traits play an important role in influencing personal food choice and habits. According to culture, their influence can manifest differently. To ascertain personal traits about food, FNS (food neophobia scale) and FIS (food involvement scale) were employed in recent studies. This study aimed to understand the food culture and food choices of East-South Asians who live or stay in Korea through comparison of FNS and FIS. Eighty Koreans and 233 East-south Asians (Indonesians, Filipinos, Malaysians, Vietnamese, Thai, Singaporeans, and Bangladeshi) completed a questionnaire to measure FNS (10 questions), FIS (12 questions), and sociodemographic conditions (9 questions). ANOVA was conducted to ascertain FNS and FIS between the groups, and regression analysis was carried out to determine which sociodemographic factors had an effect. The items were analyzed to determine the differences according to gender, age, marital status, nationality, religion, occupation, educational background, monthly income, and length of residence in Korea. FNS showed significant differences between the groups with regard to sociodemographic characteristics, except gender, age, and marital status, whereas FIS showed significant differences in gender, nationality, religion, occupation, educational background, monthly income, and length of residence in Korea. The results of the regression analysis suggest that nationality strongly affected FNS and FIS, and FIS was also affected by gender.

  • Monthly distributions of fishing boats at night in the East Sea are described, using defense meteorological satellite program (DMSP)/operational linescan system (OLS) images and common squid (Todarodes pacificus) catches data. We also estimated temperature in 50m, which is main catch depth of the squid, by MCSST (multi-channel sea surface temperature). We examined DMSP/OLS, MCSST and other observation data from 1993 to 2000. We assumed that squid were caught in areas where fishing boats were located. Fishing boats at night appeared only near the Korea/Tsushima Strait from January to March. Fishing boats moved to the northward from April to Jun, distribution of fishing boats in spring appeared greater than those in winter. In summer (July-September), center of fishing grounds was formed near the Uleung Island in the south east coast of Korea. The north-south distribution range of fishing boats in October appeared to be greater than that in other months. In particular, we estimated main season of squid catches based on distribution range reflecting the number of fishing boats of north-south and east-west directions from September to December. Relationship between satellite estimate SST and in situ SST showed high correlation (0.91). The correlation between the SST and 50m depth temperature, estimated based on the satellite SST, was relatively high in February, April and October.

  • Objectives : One of the fundamental premises of medical anthropology is the interconnectedness of medicine and society. Recent ethnographies of medicine demonstrate that the interconnectedness of the social and the medical not just evokes relatedness of the two parties, but also emphasizes the agency of the constituents, mutually shaping and being shaped. Against this backdrop, this study attempts to anthropologically investigate Korean medicine in South Korea and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in China. Methods : The findings are based on anthropological studies of East Asian medicine employing long-term fieldwork about Korean Medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Results : TCM is characterized by standardization, hospitalization, and scientization, by which simplification, collectivization, and biomedicalization prevail in contemporary traditional medicine in China. In contrast, Korean medicine is characterized by diversity, care delivery by individual private clinics, and a considerable distance from biomedicine. To understand the divergence of the two East Asian medicines, one should consider the social contexts intervening into the medical contents, such as the role of the state and dominant discourses in given historical periods. Conclusions : Korean medicine in South Korea and TCM in China demonstrate well the hybridity of the social and the medical, suggesting that, for more comprehensive understanding of the medical, the social should be paid attention to.

  • The distribution and genotypes of the sea nettle Chrysaora pacifica have been reported in the South Sea of Korea; however, little research work has been attempted in the East Sea. Here, we collected similar jellyfishes from the East Sea coasts (Goseong, Yangyang and Sokcho), and identified them to the sea nettle morphologically. In addition, the genotypes of these sea nettle were compared with those from the South Sea (Tongyeong and Geoje). Phylogenetic analysis by using the mitochondrial COI sequences showed that the genus Chrysaora was clearly separated from other taxa to be formed a monophyletic group, with each species distinctly separated. C. pacifica in the East and South Seas was separated geographically by the COI phylogeography, representing potentially different populations. The COI gene of the Korean C. pacifica had approximately 7 times more genetic variation than the nuclear ITS rDNA, and thus it might be considered as a useful marker for genetic analysis of the jellyfish population.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare level of functional independence and its correlates among community-dwelling older adults in rural areas between South Korea and the United Sates. Methods: The study employed a comparative and correlational design. Data were collected from 198 community-dwelling older adults in rural areas (South Korea=100, & US = 98). Functional independence, cognitive function, obesity and general characteristics were measured. Results: From both countries, approximately fifteen percent of older adults living independently had cognitive problems without any treatments. Among Korean older adults functional independence was associated with a number of chronic diseases and aging while in the United States the participants had a negative correlation with obesity and aging. Conclusion: For Korean older adults in rural areas, nurses should focus on monitoring older adults' abilities to manage chronic illness and designing self-management programs while in the United States the focus should be on healthy lifestyle programs about exercise and diet to increase functional independence.

  • The characteristics of the population genetic structure of the Japanese anchovy (Engraulis japonicus Temminck & Schlegel) were collected from the West, South and East Seas of Korea in August, 2006 and were compared using six microsatellite DNA loci. In the West Sea population, the range of allele number against 72 individuals was from 19 to 41, the average allele number was 28.5. In EJ9, the allele number had the highest value of 41, this was 1.4 times higher than the average number of allele. The average allele number of the South Sea population was 24.5 that was less than that of West Sea population. In EJ2, EJ9 and EJ27.1 loci, the allele number was higher than average allele number in the South Sea population. In the East Sea population, the average allele number was estimated at 25.0 that most of loci except for EJ35 were higher than average allele number. Allele frequency in the West, South and East Sea populations was below 0.24. The value of observed heterozosity for six loci was approximately 0.5 higher than that of expected heterozosity (p>0.05), but three populations similar values to these heterozosity. Although the genetic diversity was higher value of above 0.9, three populations had a similar value. Genetic differentiation and distance combined estimate of the six loci were 0.258 and 0.019 (p>0.05), respectively, but showed no significant distance between three populations. These results suggested that it is responsible for no differentiated gene pool between three populations.

  • Natural lighting is directly connected with our mental and physical health. For working or learning effect, the proper natural lighting is required for improving our living conditions. School facilities, especially, are the place where includes students' ordinary activities with learning behaviors during the school years from elementary to high school. This study was carried out for the purpose introducing a basic database in that planning a school by researching on the actual in the natural lighting system of some schools' classroom, estimating, and analyzing through a simulation, which resulted in a method of improving the natural lighting system. As a result of measuring and analyzing Daylight Factor(DF) during the time from 9 am to 3 pm when students are activating in their classroom, generally DF range of the sides near to window and aisle seats zone are not distributed well. Besides, two out of four school which are researched would not reach the standards of the law for school sanitary while rest of the schools meet the standards; Average DF 5% and Minimum DF 2%. And the result of a simulation by RADIANCE program shows the most appropriate DF range when it is applied in variable numbers about an oriehows the- South-east 15, south-east 30, south-east 45, south-west 15, south-west 30, and south-west 45 degrees. When it is applied in the variable numbers about glass transmittance - 60%, 70%, and 80% in condition facing south of a classroom, the result shows that the DF range of 80% transmittance is relatively higher than other glasses in the classroom. Thus, when a school is built, plans for an orientation is necessary for improve of elementary schools' environment with the glass installation which is made for high transmittance and is regarded with the students' activities time.

  • Objectives : This systematic review summarizes the existing evidence on anti-tumor herbal acupuncture in South Korea. Methods : Literature searches were conducted in four databases. All studies of anti-tumor herbal acupuncture which has been published in South Korea until May, 2006 were included. Data were extracted according to pre-defined criteria by two independent reviewers. Results : We found 73 papers related to anti-tumor herbal acupuncture in South Korea. Seventy of seventy-three papers are trial research and only three papers are clinical research. Herb materials which were used in those papers are Bee-venom, Wild-ginseng, Ginseng, Houttuynia cordata Thunb, Lonicerae Flos, Carthami Tinctorii Juglans sinensis, Euphorbiae Radix, Ecliptae Herba, Crotonis Semen, Juglans sinensis, Armeniaceae Amarum, so on. From those papers, Anti-tumor herbal acupunctures are effective to tumor cell line and tumor in vivo. Clinical research papers reported that Anti-tumor herbal acupunctures are useful to improve cancer related symptoms and quality of life(QOL) of cancer patients. Conclusions : From the above results, we make sure of that anti-tumor herbal acupuncture is useful therapeutics for cancer patients. If we conceive complex-herb materials and carry out more advanced research, Anti-tumor Herbal Acupuncture is one of those major therapeutics to improve clinical symptoms and quality of life(QOL) of cancer patients.
