For empirical research, 627 married working women living in Seoul, aged between 40-55 answered the structured questionnaire. The subjects consisted of 301 professional working women and 326 non-professional working women. The data were analysed by the frequencies, mean, oneway ANOVA, and multiple regression. The major findings were as follows 1) Two sub areas of midlife working women's psychological well-being-self esteem and life satisfaction-were higher than an average level. 2) The more midlife working women performed family role and work role, they perceived reward more than cost. 3) For the professional working women, the more they perceived the reward of family role and work role, the higher their psychological well-being was. The more they perceived the cost of family role and work role, the lower their psychological well-being was. These consequencies applied to not only general reward/cost of family role and work role but also interrole reward/cost between family role and work role. For the non-professional working women, general and interrole reward of family role and work role had the positive effects on psychological well-being. Their general cost of spouse role, general and interrole cost of mother role, general cost of work role had the negative erects on psychological well-being. However interrole cost between spouse role and work role did not have a significant effect on psychological well-being. Finally, the result of multiple regression analysis showed that general reward of work role had the largest positive effect on midwife working women's self-esteem. General reward/cost of spouse role had the largest effect on their life satisfaction.

  • This study concerns the role of costume in Shakespeare\`s history plays from the viewpoint of the role theory. The term “role” has been used to represent the behavior expected of the occupant of a given position or status. A specific role can not be successfully performed without the aid of the costumes. Costumes are adopted in relation with a specific role. The term ‘role’ had been borrowed from the drama. The similarity between the role on the stage and the role of the social man had been recognized. The similarity between the role on the stage and the role of the social man had been recognized. The typical examples in which the costume help to make access to a specific role and can be effectively exploited for the performance of the role are manifested in the history plays of Shakespeare. Thus, our goal in this study is to analyze the role of costume which appears in Shakespeare\`s history plays from the viewpoint of the role theory. The role of social status and position reflects sex, age, occupation, class, economic position of the characters. In his works, the crown and the mace represented not only the throne but also a previllege and supreme position. The situation role of costume could be widely used for visualizing the psychological situation and external environments of the characters on the stage. The disguise role hided one\`s status, thereby makes possible acting other\`s position. The costume also could symbolize the social status, position, rank, occupation, and the situation, and functioned as a media fo delivering messages to others. The costume performed the role of the physical and psychic protection, and provided its wearer with consolation and peaceful mind. The costume reflected the custom of a society through its wearing configuration. The costume (or a uniform) adopted by a group notified the characteristics and the expectation of action of the group to others. The results obtained from this study can provide useful cues for understanding the role action in the social structure. This kind of understanding reveals the costume phenomena in real life, allows one to perform roles properly and efficiently, and opens our insight on the overall aspects of the costume culture.

  • The purpose of this exploratory study was to analyze nursing role conceptions and test the relationships between nursing role conceptions and professional commitment among selected Korean nurses. Data were obtained from a convenience sample of 262 practising nurses of varying positions, education, and experience. The total sample represents a response rate of 93 percent. Subscales of Nursing Role Conceptions (Pieta, 1976) were used to measure professional, service, and bureaucratic role conceptions 1 the tool to measure professional commitment was developed by the investigator. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Professional role conception and service role conception were positively related(normative r= .61 : categorical r= .64). Bureaucratic role conception scores(32.6$\pm$4.97) were higher than professional and service role conception scores. 2. Experience was positively related to bureaucratic professional categorical role conception(r= .17, p< .01), and negatively related to bureaucratic professional role discrepancy(r=- .12, p< .01). There was no relationship between experience and service role conception. This study also showed that nurses who had longer experience tended to have higher role conceptions on all three subscales. 3. Nurses with a master's degree had significantly higher professional and bureaucratic role conceptions scores. Bacealaureates graduates had the lowest bureaucratic categorical role conception scores ; associate nurses had the lowest professional categorical role conception scores. 4. Nursing supervisors and head nurses had significantly higher bureaucratic categorical role coneption scores, whereas they had lower bureaucratic normative and professional role conception scores. 5. Age and experience were positively related to professional commitment (r= .24, r= .28). Hierarchical multiple regression analyses showed that the combination of nursing role conceptions explained greater variance in professional commitment pair of the variables alone. Further research employing dynamic designs is needed to execute rigorous tests of causal models of nursing role conceptions and professional commitment. The findings of this study suggest that antecedents and moderating variables of nursing role conception and professional commitment need to be explored for further theoretical. specification and empirical evaluation.
