Background: Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) is introduced species that has caused aquatic ecology activity both in vitro and in vivo were investigated for the possibility of application of the bass extract as an alternative feed ingredient. Methods: The bass oil was extracted using a 1-L supercritical extractor, while the protein was extracted from 250 g of bass dry matter, which was dissolved in 1 mL of H2O at 50℃. Both oil and protein extracts were evaluated antioxidant activities and the level of DPPH radical scavenging assay and nitric oxide (NO) production assay with lipopolysaccharide response. Oral administration of 6.6 µL/g bass protein and 5.38 µL/g bass oil conducted for investigating serological and physiological effect. Results: DPPH radical scavenging showed similar radical scavenging ability of 50 µM of ascorbic acid at 200 ㎍ of protein and 10% of oil treatment. NO concentration was diminished by the treatment of bass oil. Oral administration of both bass oil and proteins to mice showed that the body weight increase rate of the bass oil treated group was significantly reduced by 1.55 g compared to the other groups. The number of white blood cells (WBC) was increased by 4.52 k/µL in the bass protein-treated group and 4.44 k/µL in the bass oil-treated group compared to the control group. However, the serum IgG level did not show a significant difference between the bass extract-treated groups and the control group. Conclusions: These studies demonstrate that both bass oil and proteins extracted from the bass not only provide excellent effects of antioxidant and immune activity but can also be used as functional food supplements.
The present study was devised to determine the effects of body weight, organ weight, hematological values and biochemical parameters by vitamin E and selenium (Selevit) in the ovariectomized (OVX) rats. The animals were divided into 4 groups. Intact group (n=10) received no treatment and operation. Sham group (n=10) received only sham operation and no treatment. OVX group received operation and no treatment. OVX+Selevit received operation and Selevit. The body weights of the all group increased, and that of OVX+Selevit group was the lowest rates. There were significant differences (P<0.01, P<0.001) of body weights between OVX+Selevit group and all other groups. Also, organ weights such as heart, liver, spleen and kidney were measured. The heart and liver weight were significantly lower (P<0.01, P<0.001) in the OVX+Selevit group than in the Intact and Sham group. Also, the kidney weight was significantly lower (P<0.05, P<0.01) in the OVX+Selevit group than in the all other group. On the other hand, there was no significantly difference in the organ weight of spleen between the OVX+Selevit group and the other groups. The number of WBC was significantly higher (P<0.05) in the OVX+Selevit group than in the all other groups. The hematological values of RBC, MCV, MCH and MCHC were no significant differences in any groups. The biochemical parameters of serum total protein and alkaline phosphatase increased significantly in the OVX+Selevit group as compared to that in the OVX group. But, there were no significant differences in AST and ALT in any groups. We conclude that vitamin E and selenium were significantly decreased the body weights in the ovariectomized rats. Our findings suggest that vitamin E and selenium may influence the process of lipid packaging and absorption in the ovariectomized rats.

When we carried out an anti-stress study using the extracts of A. senticosus, R. coreanus, F .japonica root, and A. fruticosa fruit grown in Korea, the results showed that blood cell counts returned to normal levels fastest with R. coreanus after stress application. The total WBC count was decreased in mice due to stress, whereas the number of lymphocytes was increased. The serum glucose level was higher in the control group compared with the comparative stress group. The weight of each organ to returning to normal level was significantly faster in those mice treated with the extracts compared with those in control groups. Especially, it even return to that of normal level with R. coreanus extract, suggesting that the administration of the plant extracts in this study would affect hormonal activities in the body to increase immune activities. F. japonica root that showed the highest anti-stress activities maybe effective for lipid and carbohydrate metabolism. These results would provide basic data to examine anti-stress effects of natural plants. Further in-depth studies could contribute in the development of functional plant materials with anti-stress activities.

In order to prove the antitumor effect of Wekyungtang(WKT) that was originated in Bigeubchunkeumyobang(備急千金要方), Wekyungtang with Houttuyniae Herba(WKT-I) and Wekyungtang with Oldenlandiae diffusae Herba(WKT-II) experimentally, the studies were done, We evaluated the cytotoxic activity against B16- Fo as well as the synergistic effects with anticancer drugs such as cyclophophamide (CPM), cisplatin(CPT) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in vitro and measured body weight, survival time, hematological changes, changes of tissues in G57BL/6 implanted with B16-Fo. The results were obtained as follows: 1. In vitro cytotoxic effect against B16-Fo was shown in all groups as compared with control group, but the concentrations showing inhibitory growth rate below 55% of control was recognized in all concentrations of Wekyungtang(WKT) against B16-Fo and also concentration of $10^4$g/ml above in all group with cyclophophamide (CPM), concentration of $10^3$g/ml in Wekyungtang(WKT-l) with cisplatin(CPT) in synergistic effect, 2. In vivo body and tumor weight were significantly suppressed in all groups as compared with control group 3. The number of platelet, WBC, RBC were significantly increased in all groups, platelet aggregation was significantly increased in WKT-I and WKT-II as compared with control group. 4. In changes of tissues heavy infiltration oh cancer was shown in portal vein, pulmonary tissue, vein, peribronchiole, aveoli, while WKT-I was effective in antihepatic metastasis and WKT-II in pulmonary matastasis. From above results it was concluded that wekyungtang(WKT), wekyungtang with Houttuyniae Herba(WKT-I) and wekyungtang with Oldenlandiae diffusae Herba(WKT -II) had antitumor effect, and also wekyungtang combined with Houttuyniae Herba or Oldenlandiae diffusae Herba were more effective than wekyungtang only and also cyclophophamide (CPM), cisplatin(CPT) showed the more synergistic effect which suggests the necessity of continuous study on the mechanism of antitumor action of Houttuyniae Herba or Oldenlandiae diffusae Herba.
Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the effects of Phaseoli Semen Herbal-acupuncture(PS-HA) at $KI_{10}$ in acute nephritis induced by lipopolysaccharide(LPS) in rat. Methods : The rats were divided into 5 groups, which were control, LPS, PS-HA, NP and saline group. LPS, PS-HA, NP and saline groups were given LPS to induce acute nephritis and control group did not receive LPS. LPS group did not receive any treatment after the onset of acute nephritis. PS-HA, NP and saline group received PS-HA, normal acupuncture, and saline injection at $KI_{10}$ three times per week, respectively. To evaluate the effect of PS-HA at $KI_{10}$, the complete blood count, BUN, creatinine, TNF-${\alpha}$, and CINC-1 in serum were measured. To show its effect on renal function, creatinine, and total protein in urine was measured as well as urine output. The level of myeloperoxidase in renal tissue was quantified and complete histology was done in kidney samples obtained from the rats. Results : PS-HA group showed a significant reduction in the proportion of WBC and neutrophil, serum BUN, TNF-${\alpha}$, and CINC-1 compared to LPS group. Furthermore, a significant increase in urine output and a decrease in urinary creatinine level, MPO in renal tissue, and number of neutrophils at glomerulus was observed in PS-HA group compared to LPS group Conclusions : PS-HA at $KI_{10}$ was shown to have a significantly effect on treating LPS induced acute nephrits. Therefore, future study is needed to further evaluate the clinical usefulness of PS-HA at $KI_{10}$ in treating acute nephritis.
Inflammatory cells may produce active species of oxygen in antimicrobial defense. While such species can directly damage surrounding tissue, their major secondary role may be to mediate important components of the inflammatory response. Superoxide dismutase, antioxidant, have significant anti-inflammatory properties in rheumatoid arthritis, ischemic tissue injury and gastrointestinal disease. Increased oxidative product formation diseases. And superoxide dismutase produced by Porphyromonas Gingivalis is resistant to killing by polymorphonuclear leukocyte. The purpose of this study was to investigate on the effects of superoxide dismutase in 3T3 fibroblast and in experimental gingivitis in the rats. The effect of superoxide dismutase(SOD) to cell morphology and cell activity was measured in cultured mouse 3T3 fibroblast. After experimental gingivitis were induced by lipopolysaccharide(LPb) and bovine serum albumin(BSA), injection of SOD were done. WBC count and histologic findings were observed at 1, 2, 3, and 7 days. The results were as follows; 1. There was a little difference between LPS treated groups and SOD treated groups in 3T3 fibroblast morpholoy. 2. There was no difference between only SOD treated groups (except SOD 150U at 3days) and control in 3T3 fibroblast activity. 3. LPS $0.5{\mu}g/ml$ and SOD treated groups (except 150U) had decreased 3T3 fibroblast activity and no significant difference at 3 days. 4. LPS $5.0{\mu}g/ml$ and SOD treated groups were significantly increased cell activity of 3T3 fibroblast than control group at 1 day(P<0.05). 5. In LPS induced gingivitis, the number of leukocytes in SOD treated was significantly decreased than in saline treated at 1 day(P<0.05). 6. In histopathologic findings of LPS or BSA induced gingivitis, inflammatorycell infiltration in SOD treated groups were less than in saline treated group at 1, 2 and 3 days.
