Experiencing High Loneliness Increases Evaluation of Products in Social Media Ads

  • This research investigates how loneliness affects people's preferences for products that appear in social media ads. Four studies examine the impact of loneliness that is both measured in an established scale and situationally induced via a recall task. Individuals who experience higher levels of loneliness evaluate the same products more highly when they are advertised in a social (i.e., Instagram) compared to non-social (i.e., brand website) media platform. This effect occurs because loneliness increases people's attention to others' social evaluation of a product, and social media ads provide this information via social cues such as "likes" embedded in the ads. When the social cues are absent, the advantage of advertising on social compared to non-social media for people with high (vs. low) loneliness disappears. The findings suggest that social media ads have a unique appeal for individuals experiencing loneliness and highlight the role of social cues in shaping product evaluations.

The Relationship between Social Support and Loneliness in Elderly Women Living Alone (여성 독거노인의 사회적 지지와 외로움)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between social support and loneliness in elderly women living alone. Method: Between 1 October 2008 and 30 April 2009, a random sampling method was conducted to recruit 112 elderly women who were living alone. The subjects were at least 65 years of age. Data was collected using the social support questionnaire, and the translated Korean Version of the Revised University of California at Los Angeles Loneliness Scale (R-UCLA Loneliness Scale). Results: In our study, the sources of social support were the children, neighbours, brothers and sisters, in this order. We found that the loneliness of the subjects was related to age, the number of children, and financial difficulty. The level of loneliness negatively correlated with the social support provided by children, brothers and sisters, other relatives, and neighbours. Also, there was a negative correlation with the social support satisfaction. The social support satisfaction and the social support offered by neighbours and relatives were the significant predictors of loneliness. Conclusion: The sources of social support, such as neighbours and relatives, and the social support satisfaction should be considered when planning intervention by nurses or social workers to decrease the level of loneliness in elderly women living alone.

The Relationship Between Social Support and Loneliness in Early and Mid-adolescents : Focused on the Mediation Effect of Life Satisfaction (초기 및 중기 청소년의 사회적 지지와 외로움간 관계 : 생활만족도의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study examined the mediation effect of life satisfaction between social support and loneliness. The subjects were two hundred and eighty fifth grade elementary school and second grade middle school adolescents in Seoul. The instruments used were questionnaires about loneliness and other factors relevant to loneliness. Social support factors existing in an adolescent's external environment include the support of parents, peers, and teachers. And life satisfaction as a psychological characteristic was concerned with the adolescent's sense of self, school life, home environment, and family relations. Data were analyzed by using the t-test, Pearson's correlation and regression. Major findings were as follows: (1) There were significant differences in parent and teacher support, satisfaction with school life, home environment, and family relations between early adolescents and mid adolescents. (2) Parental, peer, and teacher support, contentment with oneself, school life, home environment, and family relations were negatively related to the fifth-grade early adolescent's loneliness. Peer support and contentment with oneself, school life, and home environment were negatively related to the second-grade middle adolescent's loneliness. (3) Life satisfaction had a mediation effect between peer, parental, and teacher support and loneliness in fifth grade early adolescence. Whole life satisfaction had a mediation effect between only peer support and loneliness.

The Relation between Social Support and Loneliness in Migrant Workers (외국인 노동자의 사회적 지지와 외로움과의 관계)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual condition of social support and loneliness and to examine of the relation between social support and loneliness in migrant workers. Methods: One hundred and thirty migrant workers were sampled from two churches located at Seoul and Gyeonggi-do in order to collect basic data onmigrant workers from August to December, 2007 using a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, t-test and ANOVA test. Results: 1) The average scores of social support and loneliness were $3.73{\pm}0.31$ and $2.57{\pm}0.31$, respectively. 2) With respect to the general characteristics of subjects, there was no statistically significant difference in social support, but there was a significant difference in loneliness according to religion (t=2.586, p=.001). 3) The correlation coefficient between social support and loneliness was not significant (r=-.010, p=.929). Conclusion: Social support should be considered in nursing intervention to decrease the level of loneliness in migrant workers. More studies are needed to identify variables influencing social support and loneliness in migrant workers.

Living Arrangement and Psychological Loneliness of Rural Elderly in Korea (농촌노인의 독거 .동거 가구형태가 심리적 고독감에 미치는 영향)

  • Living arrangement is considered an important variable in discussing loneliness and the psychological state of the elderly. From this point of view, this study aimed at Identifying the effects of living arrangements, sociodemographic variables, social activities, and social psychological variables on the psychological loneliness of the rural elderly. Though hierarchical regression analyses. the predictors of loneliness among the rural elderly were identified as single/co-residence living arrangement(r=.49), sense of well-being based on respects for others' perspectives (r: -.22), needs for remarriage (r=.22), and work hours during off- farming season (r: -.19). The effects of living arrangement remained strong and were not influenced by the addition of sociodemographic variables, social activity variable, and social psychological variables. The feeling of loneliness of the elderly who were living alone was higher than among the elderly who were living with someone else. This finding suggests that the loneliness of the rural elderly derives primarily from the lack of family Interaction. Therefore, it is recommended that social welfare policies for the rural elderly be designed to improve their family and social interactions.

The Relations of Personality Characteristics and Victimization by Peers to Loneliness in Adolescents (인성특성 및 또래에 의한 괴롭힘과 청소년의 외로움간의 관계)

  • The relations of personality characteristics, such as shyness, sociability and self-disclosure and victimization by peers to loneliness in adolescents were examined with a sample of 485 second-grade highschool students(256 boys and 229 girls). They answered the questionnaires on loneliness as well as shyness, sociability, self-disclosure, and victimization by peers. All variables were significantly related to loneliness. The more shy they were and the more victimization by peers they experienced, the more lonely they were. The more sociable they were and the more self-disclosure they showed, the less lonely they were. All variables significantly predicted loneliness and the most influential predictor of loneliness was victimization by peers, indicating that the influence of victimization by peers on loneliness is so powerful for the adolescents.

A study on the loneliness of childhood and related variables (아동기 외로움 관련변인 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is investigated on the loneliness of childhood and related variables. 400 boys and girls were sampled far this study that they are elementary school 5th 6th located in IK-San, Kim-Je city. Survey was conducted by self-reported questionnaires and 380 questionnaires were finally used for the data analysis. The data analysis with SPSS Computer program were frequency, percentage, mean, 7- 1est, one-way ANOVA with Duncan's Multiple Range test and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows : 1. Significant difference was founded in children's loneliness according to father's education, father's job mother's education, school grade, name satisfaction, body satisfaction, siblings, close relation friend number, family harmony, parent's love- acceptable. 2. Significant difference was founded in children's loneliness according to peer status degree (popular isolation aggression). Higher popular children was perceived lower in loneliness than lower popular children. Higher isolation children was perceived higher in loneliness than lower isolation. Higher aggression children was perceived higher in loneliness than lower aggressive in loneliness. 3. In the result of multiple regression analysis the influence on the loneliness be presented as follows in order of importance , peer status of isolation degree popular degree mother's job of self business, parent's love-acceptable, friends number. The result the above study indicates that peer status family harmony, parent's love- acceptable, child's psychological environmental variables influences on the loneliness but essential variables are influences peer status on the loneliness.

The Relations between Family Functioning and Self-Esteem and Loneliness in Adolescents (가족기능 및 자아존중감과 청소년의 외로움간의 관계)

  • The relations between family functioning (cohesion, conflicts, family sociability, and democratic family style) and self-esteem and loneliness in adolescents were examined in a sample of 485 2nd-grade high school students (256 boys and 229 girls). Data were collected using three questionnaires on the loneliness, family functioning, and self-esteem of adolescents. Family functioning and self-esteem were significantly related to loneliness both in adolescent boys and girls. Adolescents experienced less loneliness when family cohesion and sociability were higher, conflicts were lower, the family style was more democratic, and self-esteem was higher. Family functioning was also related to self-esteem. The more functional the family, the higher the self-esteem of adolescents. Self-esteem played a partly mediating role in the relation between family functioning and loneliness only for boys. This emphasizes the influential role of self-esteem on loneliness.

The Relations of Children's Peer Victimization, Self-esteem, and Loneliness (아동의 또래 괴롭힘 및 자아존중감과 외로움간의 관계)

  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the relations between Children's peer victimization, self-esteem, and loneliness with a sample of 494 elementary school students (293 boys and 231 girls) living in Pusan. Data was analyzed by correlations and regressions. Children's direct/indirect peer victimization were positively related to loneliness. Expecially, indirect peer victimization was more positively related to loneness than direct peer victimization was. Children's self-esteem was negatively related to loneliness. Children's direct/indirect peer victimization were negatively related to self-esteem. Expecially, direct peer victimization was more negatively related to self-esteem than indirect peer victimization was. In boys, self-esteem tended to play a perfectly mediating role between indirect peer victimization and loneliness. In girls, self-esteem tended to play a partially mediating role between direct peer victimization and loneliness.

  • Loneliness in adolescence was examined in relation to peer aggression /victimization and to parental attachment with sample of 426 eighth graders in a suburban city. The subjects rated themselves on questionnaires regarding attachment to parents, peer experiences, and loneliness. Peer aggression and victimization was also rated by peers. In both boys and girls, the more they were attached to parents, the less loneliness they experienced. The more aggression and victimization they experienced from peers, the more loneliness they experienced. Lonely adolescent girls had lower attachment to parents and higher self-rated victimization by peers.
