  • In this paper, we investigated the compensation characteristics of distorted NRZ format and RZ format signal dependence on dispersion variation of each transmission section in 8-channel WDM system. The WDM system have two transmission sections of unequal length with respect to optical phase conjugator(OPC) position. We select highly-nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber(HNL-DSF) as a nonlinear medium of OPC in order to convert wideband signal waves to conjugated waves. First, we confirmed that RZ is better than NRZ as a modulation format for maintenance or stable performance, when total dispersion or both sections in WDM system is different each other. Also, we confirmed that total dispersion of the short length section must be smaller than that of the long length section in order to excellently compensate for NRZ format signal.

  • Optical link techniques compensating chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects, which affect distortion of optical signals, generated in single mode fiber are investigated through computer simulation and design rule of these link techniques is proposed for implementation of wideband and long-haul WDM ($24{\times}40$ Gbps) transmission system. The optical link consist of dispersion management (DM) compensating the cumulated dispersion through total transmission line and optical phase conjugation in middle of total transmission line for compensating distorted signals by frequency inversion. DM schemes considered in this research are lumped DM and inline DM. It is confirmed that eye opening penalty (EOP) of overall WDM channels are more improved than those in WDM transmission systems with only optical phase conjugator (OPC), if DM is additionally applied to these systems. And, design rule in both DM schemes are proposed by using effective residual dispersion range. It is confirmed that inline DM is better than lumped DM in the improving EOP of total WDM channels and in effective residual dispersion range.

  • We investigated the antipodal-symmetric dispersion maps of a dispersion-managed link with a midway optical phase conjugator to compensate for the distorted 960 Gb/s wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal caused by these effects. The proposed antipodal-symmetric dispersion map has various shapes depending on the detailed design scheme. We confirmed that the dispersion-managed link designed with the dispersion map of the antipodal-symmetric structure is more advantageous than the conventional uniform dispersion map for compensating WDM channels. It was also confirmed that among the antipodal-symmetric structures, the dispersion map configured with the S-1-profile, in which S is inverted up and down, was more effective for distortion compensation than the dispersion map configured with the S-profile. In particular, we confirmed that the S-1-profile can broaden the optical pulse width intensively at a short transmission distance, more effectively compensating for the distorted WDM channel. Because this structure makes the intensity of the optical pulse relatively weak, it can decrease the nonlinear Kerr effect.

  • The effect of the deviations of single mode fiber lengths and residual dispersion per span (RDPS) on the compensation for the distorted WDM signals in the dispersion-managed optical links with the specially artificial distributions of the lengths of SMFs and RDPSs. The considered artificial distribution is following; the lengths of SMF and RDPSs between the adjacent fiber span are more descended in the half transmission section from transmitter to optical phase conjugator (OPC), and those are more ascended in the rest half transmission section from OPC to the receiver, as number of fiber spans are more increased.

  • In this paper the numerical methods of finding the optimal position of optical phase conjugator (OPC) and the optimal fiber dispersion are proposed, which are able to effectively compensate overall channels in $16{\times}40$ Gbps WDM system. And the compensation characteristics in the system with two induced optimal parameters are compared with those in the system with the currently used mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) in order to confirm the availability of the proposed methods. It is confirmed that the reception performances are largely improved in the system with the induced optimal parameters than in the system with MSSI through the analyzing the eye opening penalty (EOP) and bit error rate (BER) characteristics. It is also confirmed that two optimal parameters depend on each other, but are less related with the procedural problem about the first optimal value among these.

  • In this paper, the new method alternating with the method for forming the symmetrical distribution of power and local dispersion in high bit-rate WDM system with optical phase conjugator (OPC) is proposed. The proposed method is carried by finding out the optimal values of OPC position offset and fiber dispersion offset. It is assumed to be that NRZ-formatted 24-channels of 40 Gbps are simultaneously propagated in WDM system with non zero - dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) of 1,000 km. It is confirmed that the compensation extents of overall WDM channels are more improved by applying the induced optimal values into WDM system than those in WDM system with the conventional mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI) technique, and the searching procedure of the optimal values makes little difference of performance if the optimal value of one parameter related with another parameter. And, it is confirmed that the flexible design of WDM system with OPC is possible by effectiviely using by these optimal values. Thus, it is expected that the proposed method alternate with the forming method of the symmetrical distributions of power and local dispersion.

  • The implementation possibility of the flexible optical network configuration using the non-midway optical phase conjugator (OPC) in the dispersion-managed (DM) optical link for wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) transmission is demonstrated in this paper. It is confirmed that the implementation possibility of flexible link configuration is more increased, as number of fiber spans is more bigger and the residual dispersion per span (RDPS) is more large. It is also confirmed that the non-midway OPC link, in which RDPS of the latter half transmission section (after OPC) is decided by the averaged RDPS of the former half transmission section (before OPC), has more advantage for the flexible network configuration.

  • In this paper, it is investigated that the limitation due to the asymmetry of optical power and chromatic dispersion with respect to optical phase conjugator (OPC) for compensating optical signal distortion in WDM system is overcomed by using OPC position offset and optimal dispersion coefficients of fiber sections, which depend on OPC position offset. It is confirmed that overall WDM channels are efficiently compensated by applying the optimal parameter values obtained from the proposed method into 24 channels ${\times}40$ Gbps WDM system with non zero - dispersion shifted fiber (NZ-DSF) of 1, 000 km, such as power penalties of inter-channel are reduce to almost 3.5 dB from the infinite value. It is also confirmed that the flexible design of WDM system with OPC is possible by using the optimal parameters, in which OPC is placed at ${\pm}15km$ from 500 km for efficiently compensating overall channels. Thus, the methods proposed in this research will be expected to alternate with the method of making a symmetrical distribution of power and local dispersion in real optical link which generates a serious problem if it was not made but it is the condition in the case of applying the OPC into multi-channels WDM system.

  • The compensation characteristics are investigated as a function of the position an optical phase conjugation (OPC) in the optical transmission links with a randomly distributed residual dispersion per span (RDPS). The simulation results show that the optimal net residual dispersion (NRD) is decided to be 10 ps/nm and -10 ps/nm by precompensation and postcompensation, respectively, which are independence of the OPC positions.

  • An investigation has been carried out, by computer simulation, to evaluate the impact of dispersion compensation configurations on 960 Gbps wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) system with optical phase conjugator (OPC). The considered dispersion compensation configurations in this research are conventional one-end type and bi-end type. One-end and bi-end type are made by using one dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) and two DCFs to decrease dispersion accumulated in one single mode fiber (SMF) span, respectively. It is found that bi-end compensation configuration offers the equal performance with that of one-end configuration in WDM system with residual dispersion per span (RDPS) of 400 ps/nm if net residual dispersion (NRD) had to be optimized in each cases.
