  • In the proportional hazard model with the beta process prior, the posterior computation with the discrete approximation is considered. The time period of interest is partitioned by small intervals. On each partitioning interval, the likelihood is approximated by that of a binomial experiment and the beta process prior is by a beta distribution. Consequently, the posterior is approximated by that of many independent binomial model with beta priors. The analysis of the leukemia remission data is given as an example. It is illustrated that the length of the partitioning interval affects the posterior and one needs to be careful in choosing it.

  • Yates' continuity correction of the chi-squared test for testing the homogeneity of two binomial proportions in $2{\times}2$ contingency tables is developed to lower the value of the test statistic slightly. The effect of continuity correction is expected to decrease as the sample size increases. However, in extremely unbalanced $2{\times}2$ contingency tables, we find some cases where the effect of continuity correction is eccentric and is larger than expected. In such cases, we conclude that the chi-squared test with continuity correction should not be employed as a test statistic in both asymptotic tests and exact tests.

  • In this paper, we consider the first-order integer valued autoregressive(INAR(1)) model where correlation structure is similar to that of the continuous valued AR(1) process. Several methods for estimating the parameters of the INAR(1) process with negative binomial marginal are discussed. We derive asymptotic distributions of these estimators. The results of a simulation study for these estimators methods show that the estimator which we present in this paper is better than the estimator which Klimko and Nelson(1978) presented. As an application we considered the estimator of M/M/1 queue length.

  • Samples are often found to be too heterogeneous to be explained by a one-parameter family of models in the sense that the implicit mean-variance relationship in such a family is violated by the data. This phenomenon is often called over-dispersion. The most frequently used method in dealing with over-dispersion is to mix a one-parameter family creating a two parameter marginal mixture family for the data. In this paper, we investigate performance of estimators such as maximum likelihood estimator, method of moment estimator, and maximum quasi-likelihood estimator in negative binomial and beta-binomial distribution. Simulations are done for various mean parameter and dispersion parameter in both distributions, and we conclude that the moment estimators are very superior in the sense of bias and asymptotic relative efficiency.

  • In this paper we study numerical behavior of the adjustments for the variances of the pearson and deviance type dispersion statistics in two overdispersed mixture models; negative binomial and beta-binomial distribution. They are important families of an extended quasi-likelihood model which is very useful for the joint modelling of mean and dispersion. Comparisons are done for two types of dispersion statistics for various mean and dispersion parameters by simulation studies.

  • Binomial trees are used to price barrier options. Since barrier options are path dependent, option values of each node are calculated from binomial trees using backward induction. We use generalized Catalan numbers to determine the number of cases not reaching a barrier. We will generalize Catalan numbers by imposing upper and lower bounds. Reaching a barrier in binomial trees is determined by the difference between the number of up states and down states. If we count the cases that the differences between the up states and down states remain in a specific range, the probability of not reaching a barrier is obtained at a final node of the tree. With probabilities and option values at the final nodes of the tree, option prices are computable by discounting the expected option value at expiry. Without calculating option values in the middle nodes of binomial trees, option prices are computable only with final option values. We can obtain a probability distribution of exercising an option at expiry. Generalized Catalan numbers are expected to be applicable in many other areas.

  • In this paper, the negative Polya-Eggenberger distribution has been introduced by compounding negative binomial distribution with beta distribution of I-kind which generates a number of univariate contagious or compound (or mixture of) distributions as its particular cases. The distribution is unimode, over dispersed and all of its positive and negative integer moments exist. The difference equation of the proposed model shows that it is a member of the Ord's family of distribution. Some of its interesting properties have been explored besides different methods of estimation been discussed. Finally, the parameters of the proposed model have been estimated by using a computer programme in R-software. Application of the proposed model to some data, available in the literature, has been given and its goodness of fit demonstrated.

  • This study investigates the determinants of output of a manufacturing firm's innovative activity (the number of patent applications) and spillover effects using a count data model. This paper attempted a negative binomial distribution In order to take into account unobserved heterogeneity. The results of our study suggested that Firm size, R&D intensity, technical network activity, and online business performance have significantly positive effects in the Korean manufacturing industry. Moreover, there are significantly positive spillover effects in the same industry sector.

  • In this study, the Korean traditional board game Yut, is considered. We clarify the definition of yut, object being cast, from investigating shapes of various types of yut. We survey some previous researches on probabilities for the board game Yut. To define goodness of yut, we define probabilistic order for Sawi and determine order of Sawi according to the probability of each yut. For the probability distribution of Sawi, Yut binomial distribution is defined and its mean and variance are calculated. We calculate the expected advancing distance of horse or mal for a player in each of her or his turn. Two indices are suggested for the goodness of yut and probabilities are found for good yut according to these indices and probabilistic order of Sawi. Here it is assumed that four yuts do not need to be all the same. Also some suggestions are given for the standardization of yut in terms of shape and probability.
