The purpose of this study was to describe professional quality of life among emergency nurses. Methods: A total of 15 emergency rooms were selected in three cities. Among 263 nurses working at these emergency rooms, 178 nurses consented to participate in this cross-sectional survey. Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) Scale version 5 was used to measure compassion satisfaction, burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Cluster analysis was used to classify nurses according to professional quality of life. Results: The mean scores (SD) for compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress were 32.12 (5.45), 28.27 (4.28), and 28.20 (5.07), respectively. The result of cluster analysis according to standardized score of compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress yielded three clusters. Over 50% of participants showed low professional quality of life. Nurses who were included in a cluster representing low professional quality of life were younger, had shorter periods of nursing experience, and perceivedlower social support than other cluster. Conclusion: Education or support programs for emergency nurses are needed to enhance their professional quality of life.

  • This study was designed and undertaken to identify the degree of burden and quality of life in family caregivers of patients with stroke and to determine whether burden was directly related to quality of life. The data were collected from October 3rd, 1997 to March 20th, 1998. The subjects in this study were 126 caregivers as a family member and 126 patients with stroke who were hospitalized in two oriental medicine hospitals, three general hospitals located in Taegue City and Pusan City. The questionnaires consisted of questions regarding burden(25 items) and quality of life (18 items) of caregivers. Data were analyzed using percentages, mean, 1-test, ANOVA and Pearson-correlation coefficients done with the SPSS program. The results of thi study are as follows : 1. The score for family caregiver's burden was higher than the middle score. 2. The score for family caregiver's quality of life was relatively low. 3. The relationship between burden and quality of life was showed a significant inverse correlation. 4. The family caregivers' age had statistically significant differences in the degree of burden. 5. The education and monthly income of caregivers had statistically significant differences in the quality of life. That is, the higher the level of education and the higher the monthly income, the higher the degree of quality of life. 6. The age and sex of patients had affected the qualiry of life of caregivers sigmificantly. That is, caregivers felt more burden when caring for the patient group in sexties than any other age group and female patients than for male patients. 7. In the relationships between quality of life and general characteristics of the stroke patients, only the patients' sex was showed a statistically significant difference. That is, caregivers felt more quality of life when taring for male patients than female patients.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the health promotion, stress and the quality of life and relationship between those factors in patients with genital neoplasms. Method: Data of 151 subjects with genital neoplasms were collected from August 15 to October 12, 2009 at out-patient clinic in one general hospital in Daegu. Results: The mean score of health promotion of the subjects was 1.49 (${\pm}0.53$), stress of gynecologic cancer was 1.36 (${\pm}0.76$) and the quality of life of the subjects was 2.38 (${\pm}0.59$). There was a negative correlation between the quality of life and stress (r=-.482, p<.001), and positive correlation between the quality of life and health promotion (r=.442, p<.001) in the subjects. Conclusion: This study showed correlations between the health promotion, stress and the quality of life of patients with genital neoplasms. The quality of life of the patients with genital neoplasms was low when their stress was high. In contrast, their quality of life was high when the score of health promotion was high. Considering the research findings, it is necessary to develop a health promotion program for patients with genital neoplasms to strengthen their health promotion behaviors.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to find the levels of distress and quality of life of breast cancer survivors in Korea and to identify relationship between distress and quality of life. Methods: The data were collected from 122 breast cancer survivors in 2009. To measure the distress and quality of life, the 'Distress Thermometer and Problem List' and the 'Functional Assessment Cancer Therapy-Breast' were used respectively. Results: The mean score of distress was 4.77 (${\pm}2.35$) and 63.1% of the subjects reported a distress score of 4 or more, indicating a clinically significant level of distress. Among these, the most frequently reported problem area was emotion, followed by family. The mean score of the quality of life was 88.22 (${\pm}18.41$), signifying 6.13 out of 10. The levels of distress and the quality of life were negatively correlated (r=-.38, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that distress is prevalent in Korean breast cancer survivors and the distress is related negatively with their quality of life. Thus oncology professionals continuously need to assess distress of breast cancer survivors and to provide appropriate psychosocial interventions to improve their quality of life.

  • There is a growing awareness that physical barriers affect the level of independence of people with disabilities. Many researchers insist that barrier free design could influence independence living and quality of life of the disabled. The purpose of this study is to find out the effects of accessible design features of house and public facilities on quality of life of disabled people. A total of 189 questionnaires from the disabled who visited public welfare facilities was analyzed. In order to find out what variables among accessible features in housing and public spaces impact quality of life, multiple regression analysis was carried using SPSS 14. The results showed that accessible designs significantly influence quality of life of the disable. The main reason in which the disabled have difficulties when they move outside is a lack of accessible amenities and facilities. Particularly in house design, accessible main entrance route and accessible main entrance door, and removal of floor level significantly affects quality of life of the disabled. For public spaces, accessible main entrance and installation of ramp or removal of floor levels of main entrance and corridor increase quality of life people with disabilities. This paper suggested that the improvement in housing and public space, in which regulation or bylaws do not specify, should be made to increase accessibility for life quality of the disabled.

  • One of the largest and fastest growing segments of the tourism industry, sport tourism refers to travel to play sports, watch sports, or to visit a sport attraction including both competitive and non-competitive activities. In this respect, cycling can be considered as not only a form of physical exercise but also a form of tourism in which cycling is a usual tourism-related activity, heading to a particular destination. The purpose of this study is to examine how demographical differences of cycle tourists are related to the quality of their life. An online survey was conducted and data was analyzed using frequency, reliability, and one - way ANOVA using SPSS 22.0. First, we found that there was no significant difference on the quality of physical life based on demographical characteristics. Second, the analysis of the relationship between demographical characteristics and the quality of mental life showed that income level affects their quality of mental life. Third, the analysis of the relationship between socio demographic characteristics and the quality of social life showed that marital status affects the quality of social life. Fourth, no statistically significant difference was found between the demographical characteristics and the quality of environmental life. Further implications were discussed.

  • This study aimed to determine the effect of depression between the health-related quality of life and pain in elderly persons with physical disabilities. A total of 111 patients who were treated at hospital B (Seoul, Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju, and Busan) participated in the Survey. The SF-36 Health Assessment was used to determine the quality of life of subjects, the Korean version of the Geriatric Depression Scale-Short form to assess the level of depression, and Numeric Rating Scale to determine the level of pain. To determine the moderating effect of depression on the relationship between quality of life and pain, simple regression analysis, and the Sobel test were performed. There was a significant negative correlation between health-related quality of life and pain (r<-.3, p<.05), and a significant positive correlation between depression and pain (r=.251, p<.05). Thus, health-related quality of life had a simple regression relationship with depression and pain. Depression also showed a mediating effect between health-related quality of life and pain. The results of this study suggest that depression mediates between pain and quality of life.
