Delphi Survey to Develop an Analysis Framework for Mathematics Textbooks from a Critical Mathematics Education Perspective (비판적 수학교육 관점에 따른 수학교과서 분석준거 개발: 전문가 델파이 조사를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of the research was to develop an analysis framework for Korean mathematics textbooks from a critical mathematics education perspective. For this, we conducted a comprehensive literature review regarding critical theory, critical education, and critical mathematics education. Based on the literature review, we derived a preliminary framework for textbook analysis. To validate the preliminary framework delphi survey was carried out twice with 21 expert panelists in the field of mathematics education and multicultural education. The first delphi survey was conducted with open-ended questions to investigate diverse opinions regarding educational goals, contents, and teaching methods of critical mathematics education. The second delphi survey was conducted with Likert-type scale and it was analyzed using Mean, Contents Validity Ratio, Degree of Consensus. As the result of the whole research procedures, the final analysis framework was developed consisting of four categories: classical knowledge, community knowledge, communicative knowledge, and political knowledge. A development of the analysis framework from a critical mathematics education perspective could give a significant impact on the mathematics curriculum or mathematic teacher education in the Korea and a meaningful initial step for the effort of practicing critical mathematics education. It is expected that this study could not only incite consideration for the better mathematics education but also expand the prospect of research and practice in mathematics education. This study would provide a new paradigm of future mathematics education with which to teach and guide students to become members of world civil society with mathematical power and critical competency.

Analysis of 'Basic Information Technology' Textbooks in Technical High Schools (공업계 고등학교 '정보 기술 기초' 교과서의 분석)

  • In this paper, both content analysis and Romey analysis were employed to analyze 'Basic Information Technology' textbooks in technical high schools. Not only was the content analysis employed to study the organization and contents of the textbooks, but also the Romey analysis was applied so as to determine inquisitive tendency on four factors - text, data, activity and evaluation. The results from content analysis showed that the total number of pages, reading material, the number of concepts introduced in each section, and the use of application software demonstrated a discrepancy among textbooks. Also, Romey analysis showed that while the section 'text' was written with relatively low inquiry tendency for its authoritative tone, two textbooks showed high inquisitive tendency for section 'activity'. Finally, based on the obtained results, the ways to improve 'Basic Information Technology' textbooks were proposed.

Teachers' Recognition of the Problems in Mathematics Education and Development of Math Textbooks from the Perspective of Learner-Centered Education (학습자 중심 교육의 관점에서 교사들의 수학교육의 문제점 인식과 수학 모델 교과서 개발)

  • As people get to aware that the traditional teacher-centered education can not develop individual students' diversity and creativity and cope with the rapidly changing future society, Korean government has emphasized the learner-centered education since the 7th curriculum. Under this background, we have analyzed the problems of mathematics education that teachers recognized and the features of mathematics textbooks that they developed within the framework of leaner-centered education on the basis of the resources developed from 'Student-centered mathematics textbook improvement teacher research group in 2015.' As a result of using the framework of 'Learner-centered psychological principles (APA, 1997)' for analysis, teachers pointed out the problems related to the principles of Motivational and emotional influences on learning, Individual differences in learning, Developmental influences on learning, Nature of the learning process, and Construction of knowledge, in order. The features of textbook teachers developed reflected the principles of Nature of the learning process, Construction of knowledge, and Motivational and emotional influences on learning, in order. Finally, as we have compared teachers' recognition of the problems with the features of the textbooks developed, most of the problems teachers recognized are reflected in the textbooks; however, the Cognitive and metacognitive factor takes higher possession on the textbooks compared with the problems being recognized, and the Motivational and affective factor takes lower possession on the textbooks compared with the problems being recognized. Accordingly, we have been able to search for the solution to realize the learner-centered education through math textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an scientific inquiry learning module by applying ESD and to verify its effect so that students could understand sustainable development and geology concepts by reconstructing the contents of the geology related unit. For this purpose, the "Volcanoes and Earthquakes" unit in the 3-4 grade group of the Korea national curriculum was selected and the scientific inquiry learning module was developed. The developed inquiry learning module consisted of one textbook and one teacher 's guidebook, and it was put into one class of elementary school to verify the effect. As a result, the teacher said that it was good to be taught contents of ESD and it was useful because of the concreteness of inquiry activities. The students responded that they were interesting because developed textbook is more often the interesting picture and activity than traditional textbook. And the students responded that 'ESD' has been an opportunity to be interested in science.

Analysis of Earth Science Content of Elementary School Science Textbooks in Five Asian Countries : For the Children of Foreign Workers (아시아 5개 국가의 초등 과학 교과서 지구과학 내용 비교: 외국인 근로자 가정 초등 학생들을 위해)

  • As the rate of foreign workers increasing, the rates of their children are rising, as well. The children's native countries vary from Japan, China to Indonesia, and difficulty of learning is expected in their entering the regular education due to the differences in the contents and curriculum they had learnt. This study analyzed the science textbooks of five Asian elementary schools including Korea, China, Indonesia, Thailand, and Iran-in diversified sides focusing on the content of earth science, for the children of foreign workers. The characteristics of the elementary science textbooks of the subject countries were compared in seven criteria-the rate of earth science in the textbooks, how units are arranged, whether the earth science contents are included, the contents highly related to their socio-cultural traits, photographs, scientific inquiries, and test items. The textbooks showed numerous differences with their own characteristics, and it is expected that the children of foreign workers would face difficulties in studies taking parts in the Korean formal education. Hereupon, this study proposes the needs of development of sub-materials for the children of foreign workers adapting to schools, and reinforcement of educating teachers for understanding children, with a national plan for the children excluded from education due to problems such as an illegal residence.

A Study on Analyzing and Developing the Syllabus for Library and Information Science Core Courses (국내 문헌정보학 주요 교과목 강의계획서 분석 및 개발 연구)

  • This study purposed to develop and propose the curriculum content of te LIS core courses for raising professional librarians in the information society. To this end, we investigated and analyzed syllabi of LIS core courses which opened in 39 Department of Library & Information Science in Korea, and also analyzed the job analysis data which is developed by library types. As a result, syllabi of the core course for Introduction to Library and Information Science, Information Organization, Information Services, Library Management, Information Retrieval, and Library Field Studies has been developed. The syllabi included teaching methods, evaluation methods, the main textbook, and 15-week or 16-week lecture schedule and content and so on.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze comparatively and improve the preparation of chlorine gas in the high school chemistry II textbooks on the basis of the revised curriculum. From the results of the preparation experiment of chlorine gas which is commonly dealing with 9 kinds of textbook in the nation, we have found some problems and have suggested the solution of these problems. The problem is the students may inhale the chlorine gas that is to be injurious on the human body, so the research is focused on safe experimental method without inhalation of chlorine gas. The simple conviction method of character in laboratory is to propose at 5 kinds.

High School Textbook Definition and Students' Understanding of Continuity of Functions (연속함수에 대한 고등학교 교과서의 정의와 고등학생들의 이해)

  • In this paper, we first analysis definition of continuity of functions in high school textbooks, the mathematics high school curriculum and university mathematics textbooks. We surveyed what was causing the students to struggle in their concept image of continuity of functions. We arrived at that students' concept for errors in images of continuity of function were caused by definition of continuity of functions in high school textbooks.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the sixth curriculum textbooks of high school science courses in relation to the greenhouse effect concept and find the incorrect descriptions of that concept and then suggest some improved schemes. Some incorrect descriptions, pictures and tables on the greenhouse effect concept were found in texts. They might contribute to forming and/or reinforcing misconceptions about that concept: the important greenhouse gases, the changes caused by the greenhouse effect, global warming, energy sources, greenhouse experiments and physical processes.   • This study was practiced in order to develop a textbook to improve early childhood teachers' ability to use multimedia required by kindergartens and to examine its effects. First, investigation of the status of multimedia application of early childhood teachers in kindergartens was done along with looking through their attitude and anxiety. The expertise and the multimedia education was required in early childhood education and curriculum. As a result, 15 categories and 50 subcategories under 4 themes were drawn through the procedures of qualitative analysis. The conclusions obtained through this study were the following: First, the education for multimedia application related to the tasks required in kindergartens is needed instead of the common education for multimedia application, to improve the ability to use multimedia for early childhood teachers. Second, multimedia education based on visual theory for the purpose of early childhood education, rather than common features-centered multimedia education, is helpful for the improvement of early childhood teachers' ability to use multimedia. Finally, the improvement of early childhood teachers' ability to use multimedia will be a chance to provide children with a better educational environment.
