A second-moment closure is applied to the prediction of a homogeneous turbulent shear flow laden with mono-size particles. The closure is curried out based on a 'two-fluid' methodology in which both carrier and dispersed phases are considered in the Eulerian frame. To reduce the number of coupled differential equations to be solved, Reynolds stress transport equations and algebraic stress models are judiciously combined to obtain the Reynolds stress of carrier and dispersed phases in the mean momentum equation. That is, the Reynolds stress components for carrier and dispersed phases are solved by modelled transport equations, but the fluid-particle velocity covariance tensors are treated by the algebraic models. The present predictions for all the components of Reynolds stresses are compared to the DNS data. Reasonable agreements are observed in all the components, and the effects of the coupling of carrier and dispersed phases are properly captured in every aspects.
The predictive utility of a damage model depends heavily on its particular choice of a damage variable, which serves as a macroscopic approximation in describing the underlying micromechanical processes of microdefects. In the case of spatially perfectly randomly distributed microcracks or microvoids in all directions, isotropic damage model is an appropriate choice, and scalar damage variables were widely used for isotropic or one-dimensional phenomenological damage models. The simplicity of a scalar damage representation is indeed very attractive. However, a scalar damage model is of somewhat limited use in practice. In order to entirely characterize the isotropic damage behaviors of damaged materials in multidimensional space, a system theory of isotropic double scalar damage variables, including the expressions of specific damage energy release rate, the coupled constitutive equations corresponding to damage, the conditions of admissibility for two scalar damage effective tensors within the framework of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes, was provided and analyzed in this study. Compared with the former studies, the theoretical formulations of double scalar damage variables in this study are given in the form of matrix, which has many features such as simpleness, directness, convenience and programmable characteristics. It is worth mentioning that the above-mentioned theoretical formulations are only logically reasonable. Owing to the limitations of time, conditions, funds, etc. they should be subject to multifaceted experiments before their innovative significance can be fully verified. The current level of research can be regarded as an exploratory attempt in this field.
An anisotropic version of Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is proposed in order to provide a strength criterion for transversely isotropic rock. The concept of fabric tensor introduced by Pietruszczak & Mroz (2001) is employed to define the friction angle and cohesion as scalar functions of the fabric tensors. The anisotroy in these two strength parameters are calculated in association with the consideration of the relative rotation between the principal stress coordinate and the principal material triad. The critical plane on which the anisotropic function maximized is found by an optimization technique based on the Lagrange multiplier method. To demonstrate the performance of the anisotropic failure criterion, conventional triaxial tests on the samples having various inclinations of weakness plane are simulated and the resulting triaxial strength and dip angle of failure plane are discussed.
The paper reports a multiple source modeling of low-Reynolds-number dissipation rate equation with aids of DNS data. The key features of the model are to satisfy the wall limiting conditions of the individual source terms in the exact dissipation rate equation using the wall damping functions. The wall damping functions are formulated in term of dimensionless dissipation length scale ι(sup)+(sub)D(≡ι(sub)D($\upsilon$$\xi$)(sup)1/4/$\upsilon$) and the invariants of small and large scale turbulence anisotropy tensors. $\alpha$(sub)ij(=$\mu$(sub)i$\mu$(sub)j/$\kappa$-2$\delta$(sub)ij/3) and e(sub)ij(=$\xi$(sub)ij/$\xi$-2$\delta$(sub)ij/3). The model constants are optimized with aids of DNS data in a plane channel flow. Adopting the dissipation length scale as a parameter of damping function, the applicabilities of $\kappa$-$\xi$ model are extended to the turbulent flow calculation of complex flow passages.
We analyze the halo and galaxy catalogs from the Millennium simulations at redshifts z=0, 0.5, 1 to determine the alignment profiles of cluster galaxies in terms of the matter density correlation coefficient and discuss a cosmological implication our result has for breaking parameter degeneracies. For each selected cluster, we measure the alignment between the major axes of the pseudo inertia tensors from all satellites within cluster's virial radius and from only those satellites within some smaller radius. Then we average the measured values over the similar-mass sample to determine the cluster galaxy alignment profile as a function of top-hat scale difference at each redshift. It is shown that the alignment profile of cluster galaxies is well approximated by a power-law of the nonlinear density correlation coefficient that is independent of the power spectrum normalization and bias factor. The alignment profile of cluster galaxies is found to have higher amplitude and lower power-law index when averaged over the larger-mass sample and to have rather weak redshift-dependence. This result is consistent with the picture that the satellite galaxies retain the memory of the external tidal fields right after merging and infalling into the clusters but they gradually lose the initial alignment tendency as the cluster's relaxation proceeds. Demonstrating that the nonlinear density correlation coefficient varies sensitively with the density parameter and neutrino mass fraction, we discuss a potential power of the cluster galaxy alignment profile as an independent probe of cosmology.
A three-dimensional discrete fracture network model was developed in order to simulate the hydraulic characteristics of a granitic rock mass at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) Underground Research Tunnel (KURT). The model used a three-dimensional discrete fracture network (DFN), assuming a correlation between the length and aperture of the fractures, and a trapezoid flow path in the fractures. These assumptions that previous studies have not considered could make the developed model more practical and reasonable. The geologic and hydraulic data of the fractures were obtained in the rock mass at the KURT. Then, these data were applied to the developed fracture discrete network model. The model was applied in estimating the representative elementary volume (REV), the equivalent hydraulic conductivity tensors, and the amount of groundwater inflow into the tunnel. The developed discrete fracture network model can determine the REV size for the rock mass with respect to the hydraulic behavior and estimate the groundwater flow into the tunnel at the KURT. Therefore, the assumptions that the fracture length is correlated to the fracture aperture and the flow in a fracture occurs in a trapezoid shape appear to be effective in the DFN analysis used to estimate the hydraulic behavior of the fractured rock mass.
We describe the concept of the singularity in the integral equation of electromagnetic (EM) modeling in comparison with that in the integral representation of electric fields in EM theory, which would clarify the singular integral problems of the Green's tensor. We have also derived and classified the singular integrals of the Green's tensors in 3-D, 2.5-D and 2-D as well as in the thin sheet integral equations of the EM scattering problem, which have the most important effect on the accuracy of the numerical solution of the problems.
The evaluation of pressure fields acting on slender structures under wind loads is currently performed in experimental aerodynamic tests. For wind-sensitive structures, in fact, the knowledge of global and local wind actions is crucial for design purpose. This paper considers a particular slender structure under wind excitation, representative of most common high-rise buildings, whose experimental wind field on in-scale model was measured in the CRIACIV boundary-layer wind tunnel (University of Florence) for several angles of attack of the wind. It is shown that an efficient reduced model to represent structural response can be obtained by coupling the classical structural modal projection with the so called blowing modes projection, obtained by decomposing the covariance or power spectral density (PSD) wind tensors. In particular, the elaboration of experimental data shows that the first few blowing modes can effectively represent the wind-field when eigenvectors of the PSD tensor are used, while a significantly larger number of blowing modes is required when the covariance wind tensor is used to decompose the wind field.

This paper analyzes the non-stationary vibration and super-harmonic resonances in nonlinear dynamic motion of viscoelastic nano-resonators. For this purpose, a new coupled size-dependent model is developed for a plate-shape nano-resonator made of nonlinear viscoelastic material based on modified coupled stress theory. The virtual work induced by viscous forces obtained in the framework of the Leaderman integral for the size-independent and size-dependent stress tensors. With incorporating the size-dependent potential energy, kinetic energy, and an external excitation force work based on Hamilton's principle, the viscous work equation is balanced. The resulting size-dependent viscoelastically coupled equations are solved using the expansion theory, Galerkin method and the fourth-order Runge-Kutta technique. The Hilbert-Huang transform is performed to examine the effects of the viscoelastic parameter and initial excitation values on the nanosystem free vibration. Furthermore, the secondary resonance due to the super-harmonic motions are examined in the form of frequency response, force response, Poincare map, phase portrait and fast Fourier transforms. The results show that the vibration of viscoelastic nanosystem is non-stationary at higher excitation values unlike the elastic ones. In addition, ignoring the small-size effects shifts the secondary resonance, significantly.
A hierarchical iterative algorithm for the canonical polyadic decomposition (CPD) of tensors is proposed by improving the traditional conjugate gradient least squares (CGLS) method. Methods based on algebraic operations are investigated with the objective of estimating the direction of arrival (DoA) and polarization parameters of signals impinging on an array with electromagnetic (EM) vector-sensors. The proposed algorithm adopts a hierarchical iterative strategy, which enables the algorithm to obtain a fast recovery for the highly collinear factor matrix. Moreover, considering the same accuracy threshold, the proposed algorithm can achieve faster convergence compared with the alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm wherein the highly collinear factor matrix is absent. The results reveal that the proposed algorithm can achieve better performance under the condition of fewer snapshots, compared with the ALS-based algorithm and the algorithm based on generalized eigenvalue decomposition (GEVD). Furthermore, with regard to an array with a small number of sensors, the observed advantage in estimating the DoA and polarization parameters of the signal is notable.
