  • Various types of panels can be designed using acrylic rods, which are materials that allow light to pass through existing concrete. After designing using people, animals and objects, a prototype was produced by mixing ultra-high-strength concrete, and taking care not to damage the fixed acrylic rod during pouring and demolding. Yun Dong-ju's free design of a figure and a researcher were inserted into the wall inside the interior space, and then the installation was completed on-site. For installation, a metal frame was installed on the temporary wall, which is a non-structural wall, and then a relatively heavy concrete panel was fixed using a structural sealant and then applied to the field.

  • In conventional method of supporting soil shuttering wall during excavation a system of struts and wales to provide cross-lot bracing is common in trench excavations and other excavations of limited width. This method, however, becomes difficult and costly to be adopted for large excavations since heavily braced structural systems are required. Another expensive and unsafe situations are expected when temporary struts must be removed for the construction of underground structures. This paper introduces innovative strut systems which can be used as permanent underground structures after its role as brace system to resist earth pressure during excavation phase. Underground structural system suggested from architect is checked against the soil lated pressures before the analysis of stresses developed from gravity loads. In this technology, named SPS(Struts as Permanent System), retaining wall is installed first and excavation proceeds until the first level of bracing is reached. Braces used as struts during excavation will serve as permanent girders when buildings are in operation. Simultaneous construction of underground and superstructure can proceeds when excavation ends with the last level of braces being installed. In this paper, construction sequence and the calculation concept are explained in detail with some photo illustrations. SPS technology was applied to three selected buildings. One of them was completed and two others are being constructed Many sensors were installed to monitor the behavior of retaining wall, braces as column in terms of stress change and displacement. Adjacent ground movement was also obtained. These projects demonstrate that SPS technology contributes to the speed as well as the economy involved in construction.

  • Classical earth pressure theories normally assume that ground condition remains uniform for considerable distance from the wall, and that the movement of the wall is enough to result in the development of an active pressure distribution. In the case of many low gravity walls in cut, constructed, for example, by using gabions or cribs, this is not commonly the case. In strong ground a steep temporary face will be excavated for reasons of economy, and a thin wedge of backfill will be placed behind the wall following its construetion. A designer then has the difficulty of selecting appropriate soil parameters and a reasonable method of calculating the earth pressure on the w리1. This paper starts by reviewing the existing solutions applicable to such geometry. A new silo and a wedge methods are developed for static and dynamic cases, and the results obtained from these are compared with two experimental results which more correctly mod el the geometry and strength of the wall, the fill, and the soil condition. Conclusions are drawn concerning both the magnitute and distribution of earth pressures to be supported by such walls.

  • A down construction method is frequently used in these days to reduce popular discontent and to assure sufficient working space at early stage in downtown area. There are two main problems in the existing down construction method. One is a confliction between frame works and excavation works, and the other is a cold joint in retaining wall which is unavoidable due to a sequence of concrete placement and induces a water leakage. Therefore, a new method is needed to overcome these problems. The CWS (buried wale Continuous Wall System) method was developed by authors. By replacing RC perimeter beam with embedded steel wale, the steel frame works of substructure can be simplified and the water leakage can be prevented using continuous retaining wall. Consequently, the improved duality and reduction of construction period can be obtained from CWS method.

  • The purpose of this research is to introduce the new temporary earth retaining wall system using landslide stabilizing piles. This system is a self-supported retaining wall(SSR) without installing supports such as tiebacks, struts and rakers. The SSR is a kind of gravity structures consisting of twin parallel lines of piles driven below dredge level, tied together at head of soldier piles and landslide stabilizing piles by beams. There are three types of excavation wall structures: standard method for medium retained heights(<8.0m), internal excavation method and slope excavation method for deep-excavation applications(>8.0m). In the present study, the measured data from seven different sites which the SSR was used for excavation were collected and analyzed to investigate the characteristic behavior lateral wall movements associated with urban excavations in Korea.

  • In Korea, many buildings are built with underground spaces and cast-in-place pile method is mostly applied in the temporary retaining walls for the underground space construction. A H-shaped steel section is generally embedded in the soldier pile in the C.I.P method. In this study, a new and economical section with high strength steel replacing the H-shaped section was proposed and its flexural capacity was evaluated experimentally. The new section is the concrete-filled composite section with pentagonal thin plate and thick flange plate. Test results showed that the proposed section has an excellent flexural strength and ductility.

  • Recently, a cylindrical cut-off wall was proposed as a new technology for temporary offshore works. The cut-off wall has a cylindrical shape, so seepage analyses are necessary to analyze the effect of wall shape. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed to investigate the seepage discharge inside cut-off walls. The numerical modeling was verified by comparing with the theoretical solution for the cofferdam with double sheet piles. Two different flow conditions were compared between 2-dimensional flow and axisymmetric flow. The results showed that the discharge of the axisymmetric flow was about 1.55 times larger than that of 2-dimensional plain flow. A parametric study was carried out by varying wall radius, penetration depth of the wall, and total head difference between in and outside of the wall. The discharge decreased with the increase of the penetration depth and the wall radius. Finally, the design equations were suggested to determine the discharge for the preliminary design of the cylindrical cut-off wall.

  • The average height of buildings in most cities is increasing in an effort to more effectively use land. In addition, as construction technology develops, rapid construction methods have been pursued. However, while there have been great strides in construction technology, the development of a temporary structure that can support the high-rise building under construction and the rapid construction methods has been relatively limited. If the temporary structure is not built on an outer wall of a building being constructed, a worker may be injured or killed in a fall and building materials such as blocks and other objects may fall to the ground, causing the build-up of trash around the building and possible injuries to persons in proximity to the building. This paper proposes a Self Climbing Safety Fence for construction building(SCfence). SCfence was developed to solve the above problems, a tent has been setup to cover the outer wall of the building, or a falling preventing net has been pitched in a direction perpendicular to the outer wall of the building. A case study was performed to verify the validity of SCfence through comparing the safety and cost experience between SCfence and the existing method.

  • This study was intended to suggest a new-concept construction method of permanent basement wall combined with earth retaining wall by using PHC piles to overcome the disadvantages of conventional CIP methods or the like which have been used just for earth retaining walls during field construction, and to determine its applicability. PHC piles are characterized by the reliable quality attributed to prefabrication (shop fabrication) as well as superior concrete strength and prestressing steel strength to that of CIP in the aspect of materials, and also higher bending moment than that of CIP in the aspect of structure.

  • In general steel sheet pile use the containment system, vertical barrier systems for waste disposal and landfill purposes, roads in excavation which have a more permanent character or temporary structure. The sheet pile joints between section of the wall are sealed with a filter material arid the resistance to seepage is a function of the type of material employed. The aim of this paper is to review a characteristic of permeability for Z type sheet pile by field test in various condition.
