Heavy rainfall events are occurred exceedingly various forms by a complex interaction between synoptic, dynamic and atmospheric stability. As the results, quantitative precipitation forecast is extraordinary difficult because it happens locally in a short time and has a strong spatial and temporal variations. GOES-9 imagery data provides continuous observations of the clouds in time and space at the right resolution. In this study, an power-law type algorithm(KAE: Korea auto estimator) for estimating rainfall based on the rainfall type was developed using geostationary meteorological satellite data. GOES-9 imagery and automatic weather station(AWS) measurements data were used for the classification of rainfall types and the development of estimation algorithm. Subjective and objective classification of rainfall types using GOES-9 imagery data and AWS measurements data showed that most of heavy rainfalls are occurred by the convective and mired type. Statistical analysis between AWS rainfall and GOES-IR data according to the rainfall types showed that estimation of rainfall amount using satellite data could be possible only for the convective and mixed type rainfall. The quality of KAE in estimating the rainfall amount and rainfall area is similar or slightly superior to the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service's auto-estimator(NESDIS AE), especially for the multi cell convective and mixed type heavy rainfalls. Also the high estimated level is denoted on the mature stage as well as decaying stages of rainfall system.
This paper describes the fabrication and characteristics of CrN thin-film type pessure sensors, in which the sensing elements were deposited on SUS. 630 diaphragm by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitride atmosphere(Ar-(10%) $N_2$). The optimized condition of CrN thin-film sensing elements was thickness range of 3500$\AA$ and annealing condition($300^{\circ}C$, 3 hr) in Ar-10 %$N_2$ deposition atmosphere. Under optimum conditions, the CrN thin-films for strain gauges is obtained a high resistivity, $\rho$=1147.65 ${\mu}{\Omega}$cm, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR=-186 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal, 11.17. The output sensitivity of fabricated CrN thin-film type pressure sensors is 2.36 mV/V, 4$\sim$20 mA and the maximum non-linearity is 0.4 %FS and hysteresis is less than 0.2 %FS..
This paper presents characteristics of CrOx thin-film Strain gauge pressure sensors, which were deposited on SUS630 diaphragm by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-Oxide atmosphere(Ar-(10%)$O_2$). The optimized condition of CrOx thin-film strain gauges were thicknessrange of 2500$\AA$ and annealing condition ($350^{\circ}C$, 3 hr) in Ar-10 %$O_2$deposition atmosphere. Under optimum conditions, the CrOx thin-films for strain gauge is obtained a high resistivity, $\rho$=156.7$\mu$$\Omega$cm, a low temperature coefficiect of resistance, TCR=-86 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal, 15. The output sensitivity of pressure sensor obtained is 2.46㎷/V and the maximum non-linearity is 0.3%FS and hysteresis is less than 0.2%FS. The output characteristics of pressure transmitter obtained is 4~20㎃ and total accuracy is less than $\pm$0.5%FS. In those conclusions, CrOx thin film pressure sensors is quite satisfactory for many applications in industrial electronics.
Spatial distributions of phytoplankton biomass and nutrients were examined to investigate the magnitude of phytoplankton blooms along the marginal ice zone (MIZ) in the northwestern Weddell Sea during austral summer of 1995. High phytoplankton biomass was associated with the MIZ in the study area. Vertical stability induced by meltwater appears to be the most important factor controlling phytoplankton biomass distribution. Nitrate concentrations are significantly depleted within the upper water column at the phytoplankton biomass maximum. The time required to attain the observed nutrient depletion was calculated from phytoplankton biomass and nitrate depletion, which ranges from 27 to 68 days in transect 4 and from 33 to 145 days in transect 3. Phytoplankton production was also calculated from nitrate depletion and time-scales of nitrate depletion, which varies from 272 to 1752 mg C m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ in transect 4 and from 327 to 2648 mg C m$^{-2}$ day$^{-1}$ in transect 3. In the Southern Ocean where primary productivity shows large temporal and spatial variations, the productivity measurement from nutrient depletion can provide an average rate of primary production during phytoplankton bloom.
This paper presents the characteristics of Ta-N thin-film strain gauges as high-temperature strain gauges, which were deposited on Si substrate by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere(Ar-(4~16%)$N_2$). These films were annealed for 1 hour in $2{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr vaccum furnace range $500\sim1000^{\circ}C$. The optimized conditions of Ta-N thin-film strain gauges were annealing condition($900^{\circ}C$, 1 hr.) in 8% $N_2$ gas flow ratio deposition atmosphere. Under optimum conditions, the Ta-N thin-films for strain gauges is obtained a high resistivity, $\rho=768.93$${\mu}{\Omega}cm$, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR=-84 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal gauge factor, GF=4.12.
This manuscript will discuss a numerical method where the six equations of two-phase flow, the solid heat conduction equations, and the two equations that describe neutron diffusion and precursor concentration are solved together in a tightly coupled, nonlinear fashion for a simplified model of a nuclear reactor core. This approach has two important advantages. The first advantage is a higher level of accuracy. Because the equations are solved together in a single nonlinear system, the solution is more accurate than the traditional "operator split" approach where the two-phase flow equations are solved first, the heat conduction is solved second and the neutron diffusion is solved third, limiting the temporal accuracy to $1^{st}$ order because the nonlinear coupling between the physics is handled explicitly. The second advantage of the method described in this manuscript is that the time step control in the fully implicit system can be based on the timescale of the solution rather than a stability-based time step restriction like the material Courant limit required of operator-split methods. In this work, a pilot code was used which employs this tightly coupled, fully implicit method to simulate a reactor core. Results are presented from a simulated control rod movement which show $2^{nd}$ order accuracy in time. Also described in this paper is a simulated rod ejection demonstrating how the fastest timescale of the problem can change between the state variables of neutronics, conduction and two-phase flow during the course of a transient.
There is still large uncertainty in estimating aerosol indirect effect despite ever-escalating efforts and virtually exponential increase in published studies concerning aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions (CAPI). Probably most uncertainty comes from a wide range of observational scales and different platforms inappropriately used, and inherent complex chains of CAPI. Therefore, well-designed field campaigns and data analysis are required to address how to attribute aerosol signals along with clouds and precipitation to the microphysical effects of aerosols. Basically, aerosol influences cloud properties at the microphysical scales, "process scale", but observations are generally made of bulk properties over a various range of temporal and spatial resolutions, "analysis scale" (McComiskey & Feingold, 2012). In the most studies, measures made within the wide range of scales are erroneously treated as equivalent, probably resulting in a large uncertainty in associated with CAPI. Therefore, issues associated with the disparities of the observational resolution particular to CAPI are briefly discussed. In addition, the dependence of CAPI on the cloud environment such as stability and adiabaticity, and observation characteristics with varying situations of CAPI are also addressed together with observation framework optimally designed for the Korean situation. Properly designed and observation-based CAPI studies will likely continue to accumulate new evidences of CAPI, to further help understand its fundamental mechanism, and finally to develop improved parameterization for cloud-resolving models and large scale models.
The physical, electrical and piezoresitive characteristics of CrN(chromium nitride) thin-films on silicon substrates have been investigated for use as strain gauges. The thin-film depositions have been carried out by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere(Ar-(5∼25 %)Na$_2$). The deposited CrN thin-films with thickness of 3577${\AA}$ and annealing conditions(300$^{\circ}C$, 48 hr) in Ar-10 % N$_2$deposition atmosphere have been selected as the ideal piezoresistive material for the strain gauges. Under optimum conditions, the CrN thin-films for the strain gauges is obtained a high electrical resistivity, $\rho$=1147.65 ${\mu}$$\Omega$cm, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR=-186 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal gauge factor, GF=11.17.
This paper presents the characteristics of Ta-N thin film strain gauges that are suitable for harsh environemts, which were deposited on thermally oxidized Si substrates by DC reactive magnetronsputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere (Ar-$N_2$ (4 ~ 16 %)). These films were annealed for 1 hr in $2{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr in a vacuum furnace with temperatures that ranged from 500 - $1000^{\circ}C$. The optimized deposition and annealing conditions of the Ta-N thin film strain gauges were determined using 8 % $N_2$ gas flow ratio and annealing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr. Under optimum formation conditions, the Ta-N thin film strain gauges obtained a high electrical resistivity, ${\rho}\;=\;768.93\;{\mu}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm$, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, $TCR\;=\;-84\;ppm/^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal gauge factor, GF=4.12. The fabricated Ta-N thin film strain gauges are expected to be used inmicromachined pressure sensors and load cells that are operable under harsh environments.
We have developed a locally variable time-step scheme matching with discontinuous grids in the flute-difference method for the efficient simulation of seismic wave propagation. The first-order velocity-stress formulations are used to obtain the spatial derivatives using finite-difference operators on a staggered grid. A three-times coarser grid in the high-velocity region compared with the grid in the low-velocity region is used to avoid spatial oversampling. Temporal steps corresponding to the spatial sampling ratio between both regions are determined based on proper stability criteria. The wavefield in the margin of the region with smaller time-step are linearly interpolated in time using the values calculated in the region with larger one. The accuracy of the proposed scheme is tested through comparisons with analytic solutions and conventional finite-difference scheme with constant grid spacing and time step. The use of the locally variable time-step scheme with discontinuous grids results in remarkable saving of the computation time and memory requirement with dependency of the efficiency on the simulation model. This implies that ground motion for a realistic velocity structures including near-surface sediments can be modeled to high frequency (several Hz) without requiring severe computer memory
