Estuarine wetland, where freshwater meets saltwater, is a transitional ecosystem that is valuable ecologically for a variety of reasons, such as feeding and breeding sites for birds, fish, and wildlife. However, research on the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of estuarine wetlands in Korea is rare. As a fundamental basis for wetland conservation, this study quantified the wetlands in three major estuaries, and evaluated the temporal dynamics of the wetlands since the 1910s. In particular, this study classified the wetland types into mud flat, sand, and emergent-plant types, and estimated the change of each wetland type, using topographic maps produced in the 1910s, 1970s, and 2000s. The wetlands in both the Han and Youngsan River estuaries have declined since the 1910s, but the rate of wetland decline was relatively low before the 1970s, compared to that since the 1970s. The impact of human activities, such as the Youngsan Watershed Comprehensive Development Project and the construction of estuary barrages, has disrupted the estuary cycles and destroyed huge amounts of wetland in the Youngsan estuary. By contrast, estuarine wetlands have been preserved in the small Gahwa estuary, and provide a variety of habitats for plants and wildlife. A special management strategy for wetlands should be established as soon as possible.

The impervious surface was frequently employed as a proxy of the total environmental burden in the urban area. The impervious surface was extracted from a satellite image and the GIS (Geographical Information System) database for childhood asthma hospitalizations was generated for a total of 62,136 children using the National Health Insurance database of South Korea. Children living in an impervious environment do result in almost twice as many hospitalizations (26.58%) for asthma, as compared to the sub-urban pervious living (15.82%). Furthermore, the risk zones with persistently high hospitalizations for three years were specifically identified over the impervious sub-district alone. The impervious zone showed a small inter-year variation of hospitalizations (r: 0.937) while the sub-urban pervious fringe was found to display a yearly variation(r: 0.371). The strong temporal autocorrelation means that the impervious areas have frequent long-lived hospitalizations for asthma, thus children living in impervious areas were likely to have had more chronic asthma attacks than those living in pervious areas. These experimental results indicate that an impervious surface as thematic parameter of analysis is a crucial explanatory variable for asthma hospitalizations and its longer persistence among children.

Drones are increasingly being used to investigate disaster damage because they can quickly capture images in the air. It is necessary to extract the damaged area by registering the drones and the existing ortho-images in order to investigate the disaster damage. In this process, we might be faced the problem of registering two images with different time and spatial resolution. In order to solve this problem, we propose a new methodology that performs initial image transformation using line pairs extracted from images and association matrix, and final registration of images using linear features to refine the initial transformed result. The applicability of the newly proposed methodology in this study was evaluated through experiments using artifacts and the natural terrain areas. Experimental results showed that the root mean square error of artifacts and the natural terrain was 1.29 pixels and 4.12 pixels, respectively, and relatively high accuracy was obtained in the region with artifacts extracted a lot of linear information.
A new methodology to detect forest fire burnt scars at near real time using MODIS (Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data is presented here with a goal of introducing a new and improved capability to detect forest fire burnt scars in Thailand. This new technology is expected to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of the forest fire tackling resources distribution and management of the country. Using MODIS data in burnt scars detection has two major advantages - high availability of data and high resolution per performance ratio. Results prove the near real time algorithm suitable and working well in order to monitor the forest fire dynamic movement. The algorithm is based on the threshold separated linear equation of burnt and un-burnt. A ground truth experiment confirms the burnt and un-burnt? areas characteristics (temperature and NDVI). A threshold line on a scatter plot of Band I and Band 2 is determined to separate the burnt from un-burnt pixels. The different threshold values of NDVI and temperature use to identify pixels' anomaly, abnormal low NDVI and high temperature. The overlay (superimpose) method is used to verify burnt pixels. Since forest fire is a dynamic phenomenon, MODIS burnt scars information is suiting well to fill in the missing temporal information of LANDSAT for the forest fire control managing strategy in Thailand. Oil pollution of the ocean is a major environmental problem, especially in its coastal zones. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) flown on satellites, such as ERS-2 and Envisat, has been proved to be a useful tool in oil spill monitoring due to its wide coverage, day and night, and all-weather capability. The total 120 SAR images containing oil spill over the East China Sea were collected and analyzed, ranging in date from July 23, 2002 to November 11, 2005. After preprocessed, SAR images were segmented by adaptive threshold method. The oil spill images were incorporated into GIS after distinguished from look-like phenomena, finally we presented the oil spills distribution map for the East China Sea. The wide-swath and quick-looks SAR imagery for mapping of oil spill distribution over large marine areas were proved to be useful when full resolution data are not available. After the temporal and spatial distribution of the oil spills were analyzed, we found that most of oil spills were distributed along the main ship routes, which means the illegal discharge by ships, and the occurrence of oil spill detected on SAR images acquired during morning and summer is much higher than during evening and winter.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the hydraulic behavior in a stream reach using SMS RMA-2 model with a series of dynamic boundary conditions of main stream and lateral flows simulated by WMS HEC-1 program. For the stream reach (10.5 km) between Gongdo and Pyeongtaek water level gauge stations of Anseongcheon, the model simulated two dimensional flow characteristics by applying dynamic flow conditions of rainfall frequencies of 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 years for the main stream and three tributaries. The temporal flow behavior successfully simulated and the results showed that the distribution of mean velocity and water level within the stream reach increased according to the increase of flow frequency. Especially, the flow velocity sensibly increased at the near downstream of lateral inflow as the width of main stream is narrower.

In order to determine temporal changes of the urban landscape, interdependence and interaction among geo-spatial objects can be analyzed using GIS analytic methods. In this study, to investigate changes in the landscape structure of the Namyangju area, the size and shape of landscape patches, and the distance between the patches were analyzed with the Spatial Autocorrelation Method. In addition, both global and local spatial autocorrelation analyses were conducted. The results of global Moran's I revealed that both patch size and shape index transformed to a more dispersed pattern over time. Next, the local Moran's I of patch size in all time series determined that almost all patches were of a high-low pattern. Meanwhile, the local Moran's I of the shape index was found to have changed from a high-high pattern to a high-low pattern in time series. Finally, as time passes, the number of hot spot patches about size and shape index had been decreased according to the results of hot spot analysis. These changes appeared around the development projects in the study area. From the results of this study, degradation of landscape patches in Namyangju were ascertained and their specific areas were delineated. Such results can be used as useful data in selecting areas for conservation and for preparing plans and strategies in environmental restoration.

This paper analyzes the characteristics of trip chaining activities of elderly and explores temporal and spatial distribution. The research also estimates ordered probit model and binary logistic model to investigate various factors affecting trip chaining and mode choice patterns. We utilized household survey data for elderly conducted in 2006 and 2010 in Seoul metropolitan area. Research results indicate that trip chaining showed an increasing trend and simple trip chaining counts for more than 85%. GIS mapping expressed spatial distribution of trip departure and arrival areas, particularly showing regional changes in job-related trips. We also found that more factors influence trip chaining in 2010, compared with 2006, and travel cost is more sensitive than travel time in determining travel mode. The research contributes to establish transportation policies based on travel behavior of elderly in a upcoming super-aged society.
The converge of location-aware devices, GIS functionalities and the increasing accuracy and availability of positioning technologies pave the way to a range of new types of location-based services. The field of spatiotemporal data mining where relationships are defined by spatial and temporal aspect of data is encountering big challenges since the increased search space of knowledge. Therefore, we aim to propose algorithms for mining spatiotemporal patterns in mobile environment in this paper. Moving patterns are generated utilizing two algorithms called All_MOP and Max_MOP. The first one mines all frequent patterns and the other discovers only maximal frequent patterns. Our proposed approach is able to reduce consuming time through comparison with DFS_MINE algorithm. In addition, our approach is applicable to location-based services such as tourist service, traffic service, and so on.
The purpose of this research were to find ways to detect ecotone between the Mt. Pukhansan National Park and adjacent urban residential areas, to measure the width and size of ecotone around the park, and to investigate temporal change of ecotone around the Park. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) derived from TM data (May of 1985, 1987, and 1993) and the analytical capabilities of GIS were used to investigate the impacts of human activities inside of and outside of the boundary of the park. Major findings of the study can be summarized as follows: First, ecotone around the boundary of the national park could be identified from NDVI-distance curves derived by a series of buffering operations with a GIS. Second, average width of ecotone around the park was nealy doubled during 1985-1993 period. Third, NDVI vaules of the park were about 14 percent higher than those of surrounding areas. Finally, it seems that the expansion of the ecotone of the park is related to heavy trampling of visitors and various types of environmental pollution of the adjacent urban areas.
