  • Dictyostelid cellular slime molds isolated quantitatibly from the oils of evergreen broad-leaved forest and moist grassland of mt. halla in korea. nineteen species were found, including four undescribed species. species underscribed in korea are dictyostelium aureum var. aureum, d. crassicaule, d. monochasioides, and polysphondylium tenuissimum. Among these isolates, d. crassicaule and d. monochasioides were found only in evergreen broad-leaved forest, and p.tenuissimum was commonly found in moist grassland and meadow. in warn temperate regions investigated, d. mucoroides occurred rarely. It was noticeadle that d. sphaerocephalum, d. aureum var. aureum and d. purpureum were much more commonly found in warm temperate region. Species diversity in evergreen broad-leaved forest was the highest among the forests investigated until now in korea. Many isolates in mt. halla distributed differently in relation to the vegetations and altitudes. distritution patterns of isolates from mt. halla were discussed.

  • Many studies have suggested the positive effects of grazing by large herbivorous mammals on seed dispersal, but little is known about how herbivores could affect the fate of ingested seeds. This study examined the effects of seed ingestion by sika deer (Cervus nippon) on seed fate in a temperate grassland established in an urban park long resided by high densities of sika deer. I compared species composition and seasonal traits of seed abundance and maturity in the grassland community with those in deer fecal pellets. In total, 27 herbaceous species were observed, including the predominant Zoysia japonica. Seed phenology and production differed among the three dominant species (Z. japonica, Digitaria violascens, and Hydrocotyle maritima). Pellets contained at least 26 species of herbaceous seeds, and their abundance differed among species. Of the 26 species, 15 were observed in the vegetation at the study site. The peak of seed abundance in pellets for the dominant species appeared 1 month after the peak of inflorescence production (but most of the inflorescences were immature and susceptible to digestion) and consequently corresponded to the peak of mature inflorescence. Because sika deer are likely to ingest seeds at any maturity stage in the grassland and immature seeds are less hardened, ingested immature seeds can suffer great losses. The results suggested that the survival of germable seeds with great losses of immature seeds may be a factor determining which plant species can be successfully dispersed by herbivores.

  • To develop accurate and predictive global carbon cycle models, it is important to understand the change of accumulated carbon for many ecosystems according to successional stage. In this study, I measured total biomass, litter and soil organic matter contents through an aerial photo and field observation. As a result, accumulated organic matter contents per unit area (kg $m^{-2})$ of three communities composed at grassland were 7.00 kg $m^{-2}$, in Solidago altissima community, 9.18 kg $m^{-2}$, in Imperata cylindrica community, and 12.68 kg $m^{-2}$, in Miscanthus sinensis community, respectively. Accumulated total organic matter contents was high in Miscanthus sinensis community at later succession stage but soil carbon was low. In Miscanthus sinensis community, highly accumulated organic matter contents was resulted from increasing of biomass comparison with that of the other two communities. The pattern of accumulated organic matter contents was changed by changing of the dominant community due to progressing in succession. The accumulated carbon in temperate grassland will be increased with progressing in succession.

  • The production of traditional cool season grasses in temperate regions is becoming hampered during summer seasons due to water deficit. Thus, incorporating water use efficient warm season annual grasses are generally considered to fill the gap of summer season forage reduction that would offer considerable flexibility and adaptability to respond to forage demand. Teff (Eragrostis teff Zuccagni) Trotter) is, a C4 drought tolerant warm season annual grass primarily grown for grain production, recently gaining interest for forage production particularly during summer season. Previous reports have showed that teff is palatable and has comparable forage biomass and feed quality as compared to other warm season annual grasses which would make it an alternative forage. However, the available data are not comprehensive to explore the potential of teff as forage, hence further assessment of genotype variability and performance along with compatibility study of teff with forage production system of specific environment is key for future utilization.

  • To find out the effect of different patterns of nitrogen and potassium distribution on dry matter yield and botanical composition of temperate pastures, a field experiment was conducted with 6 treatments replicated 3 times in a randomized complete block design. It was lasted from September, 1986 to October, 1989 at the Livestock Experiment Station in Suweon. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. In early spring, winter hardiness, growth vigour, cold damage and coverage of grasses with 30% dressing of the total amount of N and K20 fertilizer in spring and at the 4th cutting time respectively were better than those of the other treatments. 2. Average dry matter yield for 3 years with heavy dressing in spring and at the 1st cutting time(l1, 187 kg DM/ha) was much more increased by 9% than that of the equally fertilized treatment(l0,24lkg DM/ha). 3. Changes in the botanical composition showed, in general, the same tendency for all treatments except equal N and K20 distribution. However, grassland vegetation with heavy dressing in spring and at the 1st cutting time was changed into relatively good botanical composition with 76.7% grasses, 22.3% legumes and 1.0% herbs at the end of the experiment. 4. By DM yield and botanical composition treatment 3(40-30-15-0-1570) seemed to be an optimal nitrogen and potassium distribution pattern in a temperate pasture.

  • Objective: The observation that temperate C3 and tropical C4 forage silages easily produce large amounts of ethanol or acetic acid has puzzled researchers for many years. Hence, this study aimed to assess the effects of epiphytic microbiota from C3 forages (Italian ryegrass and oat) on fermentative products and bacterial community structure in C4 forage (sorghum) silage. Methods: Through microbiota transplantation and γ-ray irradiation sterilization, the irradiated sorghum was treated: i) sterile distilled water (STSG); ii) epiphytic microbiota from sorghum (SGSG); iii) epiphytic microbiota from Italian ryegrass (SGIR); iv) epiphytic microbiota from oat (SGOT). Results: After 60 days, all the treated groups had high lactic acid (>63.0 g/kg dry matter [DM]) contents and low pH values (<3.70), acetic acid (<14.0 g/kg DM) and ammonia nitrogen (<80.0 g/kg total nitrogen) contents. Notably, SGIR (59.8 g/kg DM) and SGOT (77.6 g/kg DM) had significantly (p<0.05) higher ethanol concentrations than SGSG (14.2 g/kg DM) on day 60. After 60 days, Lactobacillus were predominant genus in three treated groups. Higher proportions of Chishuiella (12.9%) and Chryseobacterium (7.33%) were first found in silages. The ethanol contents had a positive correlation (p<0.05) with the abundances of Chishuiella, Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Chryseobacterium, and Sphingobacterium. Conclusion: The epiphytic bacteria on raw materials played important roles in influencing the silage fermentation products between temperate C3 and tropical C4 forages. The quantity and activity of hetero-fermentative Lactobacillus, Chishuiella, Acinetobacter, Stenotrophomonas, Chryseobacterium, and Sphingobacterium may be the key factors for the higher ethanol contents and DM loss in silages.

  • The present study elucidates the effect of drught by polyethylene glycol solution on germination of five temperate and two tropical grasses. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The germination percentage of seven grasses decreased with increasing concentration of polythylene glycol. 2. The germination pattern hi higher concentration of polyethylene glycol showed similar trends to the emergence pattern under drought stress in soil condition. 3. The treatment of 30g is most useful at this study. Therefore, polythlene glycol was the appropriate to creat the drought condition of soil.

  • To study management practices suitable for the least production loss of temperate pasture under summer stress, two different cutting dates (late June and mid July) under summer stress and five different nitrogen treatment application levels (0, 100. 200, 300 and 400 kg/ha) were tried during the trial period between Oct. of 1986 and Oct. of 1989. The late June cutting showed a statistically significant increase of dry matter yield of pasture in comparison with the mid-July cutting(P<0.05). Nitrogen application also gave significant increase in dry matter yield. Botanical composition at the 4th cuttings in 1988 and 1989 was dominated by weeds to the level of 50%, Application ofnitrogen at 200 kgs per ha was found to be the best with production of grasses at 70%, legumes at 10 % and weeds at 20% in botanical composition comparison of pastures at the 4th cutting time the last year, showing a great decrease of weeds. K contents of pasture in June cuttings showed to be more than them in July cutting, and N and Na contents increased with increases of the nitrogen application level. It was concluded that treatment with June cutting and nitrogen application of 200 kg per ha was a way to keep temperate pasture from summer stress in the Cheju area.

  • To find out the nutrient contents of temperate grasses on the south and north slope, a field experiment was conducted with five forage species of Dactylis glomerata, Festuca arundinacea, Phleum pratense, Agrostis gigantea and Trifolium repens. It was treated by randomized block design with 4 replications and lasted from September, 1983 to October, 1986 in Suweon. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Mean chemical compositions except NFE and crude fiber of the forage species on the south slope were a little more contented than that of north. But all crude components were significant difference among the species on the south and north exposure. 2. Production of TDN (total digestible nutrient), StE (starch equivalent) ME (metabolizable energy) and NEL (net energy lactation) of different grass species on the north slope were much more increased by 5-30% per ha (Dactylis glomerata by 5-876, Festuca arundinacea by 5%, Phleum pratense by 24-26% and Agrostis gigantea by 25-30%) than that of same grasses on the south, however, those of Trifolium repens were much more increased by 4 1-42% per ha in the south. 3. Mineral contents, Ca/P ratio and K/ (Ca + Mg) equivalent ratio of the species were slightly different between the exposures. But considering the factors of occuring grass tetany, those of the forage species on the north slope were better than that of same species on the south.
