Technostress Creators and Its Influence on Employees in Organizations (조직구성원들의 테크노스트레스 형성과 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Despite the growing interest in technostress phenomenon of employees in organizations, few guidelines exist about how mangers can effectively control their technostress. Accordingly, scholars should pay greater attention to how firms can successfully manage employees' technostress. This study conceptually developed and tested a research model for understanding the influence of technostress on psychological and behavioral strains. In addition, we tested technical support provision as a moderator. We obtained 107 samples through a survey questionnaire, and data were analyzed based on structural equation modeling (SEM). As a result, it was empirically demonstrated technostress decreases job satisfaction and individual productivity. We also found that technical support provision have moderating effects on the relationship of technostress and job satisfaction/individual productivity.

The Effect of Technostress on Counterproductive Work Behavior (테크노스트레스가 반생산적 과업행동에 미치는 영향)

  • Due to advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs) and the advent of the Smartphone, people have access to the internet and can work at any time and any where. These are however likely to cause negative effects such as the personal information leakage and invasion of privacy. Caused by negative aspects of ICTs, the stress is so-called technostress. Recently, it is reported that managers tend to task order to their subordinates using an SNS or mobile messenger on a real-time basis after office hours or even on holiday, leading to a sharp increase in technostress. While previous studies of stress indicate that it is associated with the counter-productive work behavior (CWB), no empirical evidence has shown about the relationship between technostress and CWB. This study aims to explore the effect of technostress on CWB. In addition, it seeks to clarify the moderating effect of leader-member exchange(LMX) in this relationship. Drawing on literature regarding technostress and CWB, hypotheses are developed and tested with the sample of 101 using regression analyses. Results show that technostress has a significantly positive effect on CWB, but LMX has an insignificant moderating effect in the relationship between technostress and CWB. Implications and limitations with suggestions for future studies are presented.

The Effects of Technostress and Work Connectivity after Work Hours on Job Satisfaction : Focusing on a Mediating Role of Work-Life Conflicts (테크노스트레스와 일과 후 업무연속성이 직무만족에 미치는 영향 연구 : 일-삶의 갈등의 매개역할을 중심으로)

  • Due to the rapid development of information communication technology, employees have conducted their tasks with smart devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs in the midst of after work hours. In line with this phenomenon, we have examined the relationships among technostress, work connectivity behavior after hours (WCBA) and technostress inhibitors and job satisfaction. Based on the results of prior research, we developed and tested our research model which posits the certain factors such as technostress, WCBA and technostress inhibitors affect work-life conflicts which, in turn influence employees' job satisfaction. Survey data collected from 345 users who have experiences on using smart devices was used to test the model using PLS (partial least squares). In this study, we found that technostress and WCBA were positively related to the work-life conflicts. We also found that the relationship between technostress inhibitors and job satisfaction was significant. The implications of these findings for both research and practice are discussed.

An Investigation of Causes and Effects of Technostress Creators (테크노스트레스 유발 요인의 원인과 영향에 대한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among causes and effect of technostress creators and technostress creators. Rooted in the person-technology fit model, this research suggests cause of technostress creators such as system quality and system vulnerability. Furthermore, the research suggests outcome of technostress such as organizational commitment. The research found that system vulnerability has significant effects on the technostress creators. In addition, technostress creators influence significantly an organizational commitment. The conclusions and implications are discussed.

Analyzing the Structural Relationship among Childcare Center Innovativeness, Digital Literacy of Early Childhood Teachers, Technostress and Teacher Efficacy (어린이집 조직혁신성, 영유아교사의 디지털 리터러시, 테크노스트레스와 교사효능감 간의 구조적 관계 분석)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the structural relationship among child care center innovativeness, the early childhood(EC) teacher's digital literacy(DL), technostress and teacher efficacy. Methods: The participants were 454 EC teachers and were selected only if they had worked for more than one year. The innovativeness of childcare centers, the teacher's DL, technostress, and teacher efficacy were assessed through online self-report questionaries. Data were analyzed through ANOVA, t-test, and SEM. Results: First, DL and technostress of EC teachers differed in some ways depending on the teacher's demographic background, the characteristics of their working institution, and their educational level of digital skills. Second, the childcare center innovativeness directly had a significant positive effect on DL, technostress, and efficacy of the teachers. In addition, the effect of the innovativeness on teacher efficacy was mediated by DL and technostress of the teachers. Conclusion/Implications: The more efforts made of childcare centers for recognizing the rapid development of DL and trying to change, the better the teacher's scores of DL and the appropriate technostress were, which increases teacher efficacy. So, continuous training and education for teachers with consideration of age and teaching experience, as well as public aid to improve teachers' DL skills are required.

An Effect of Technostress After-Work Hours on Turnover Intention

  • Based on the technostress theory, this study aims to explore the effect of technostress caused by the use of social media during or after work hours on job turnover intention. This study conducted an online survey targeting 341 Chinese WeChat users. According to the results of the structural model analysis, role overload, role conflict, and work invasion that occur during work affect technostress, and social interaction overload, invasion of private life, and Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) that occur after work have a effect on technostress as well. Technostress occurring during work did not appear to have an effect on turnover intention, but technostress occurring after work was found to have a positive effect on turnover intention. It is expected that this study will be used as a basic data for the correct use of social media within an organization.

The Major Factors Influencing Technostress and the Effects of Technostress on Usage Intention of Mobile Devices in the Organization Context (조직 내에서 테크노스트레스에 영향을 미치는 요인 및 테크노스트레스가 조직 내 스마트 기기 활용에 미치는 영향)

  • The development of smart devices has affected employees' working environments and their lives. However, using smart devices is causing employees to experience technostress. This study aims to investigate the effects of technostress in using smart devices on usage intention in an organization. Moreover, the study investigates the effect of employees' stress-coping methods on the intention to use smart devices. This study posits familiarity, use innovativeness, role ambiguity, system vulnerability, technological limitation, and ubiquity as the antecedents of technostress. Data collected from 317 users who have experience in using smart devices in organizations are empirically tested against a research model using the PLS graph. Analysis results show that role ambiguity, system vulnerability, and technological limitation significantly influence technostress. Moreover, users take up emotion-focused coping behaviors because of technostress. Emotion-focused coping behaviors affect usage intention in organizations. However, technostress and problem-focused coping behaviors do not directly affect usage intention in organizations.

Mediating Effects of Workplace Learning and Self-efficacy on the Relationship between Technostress and Job Satisfaction of Convalescent Hospital Nurses

  • This study was tried to explore the mediating effect of workplace learning and self-efficacy on the relationship between technostress and job satisfaction in convalescent hospital nurses. Data were collected from 149 nurses working at one of 10 convalescent hospitals located in Korea's D region and between July 20 and August 12, 2019 and analyzed using SPSS 24.0. The mediating effects of workplace learning and self-efficacy in the relationship between technostress and job satisfaction were investigated by conducting hierarchical regression analysis and testing for significance based on bootstrapping p values. We found that workplace learning had a complete mediating effect, and self-efficacy a partial mediating effect, in the relationship between technostress and job satisfaction in convalescent hospital nurses. Exploring diverse factors and environmental features affecting job satisfaction in convalescent hospital nurses is highly relevant to clinicians, especially given the gradually increasing number of convalescent hospitals, changes during the era of technology fusion, and the strategic demands arising from an aging society.

A Study on the Effects of Home-based Telecommuting Environments and Technostress to Work Productivity (재택근무 제도강화와 테크노스트레스가 업무생산성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 : 행동통제와 기술준비도의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • Corna Virus is being widely spreaded across the world and accelerating working environments to home-based telecommuting environments rapidly. Many companies, however, are afraid of decrease in productivities due to insufficient technology readiness by new technology environments. Therefore, finding out the influencing factors which improve the productivities in home-based telecommuting environments is a very important research issue. This study suggests several influencing factors such as technology readiness, technostress, and control behavior and a research model by literature review. To verify the model a total of 204 questionnaires are collected from office workers who are currently utilizing home-based telecommuting. The statistical analysis show that technostress influences negatively to productivities. In addition, moderating effect analysis show that control behavior affects negatively and technostress positively to alleviate the technostress. The result is expected to provide a theocratical framework for further related research and practical guidelines for improving productivities in home-based telecommuting environments.

How Does Technostress Influence Employees' Role and Performance in An Organization?: The Moderating Effect of Innovation Support (조직 내 기술스트레스가 역할과 성과에 미치는 영향: 혁신지원의 조절효과)

  • This study applies the concepts of sociotechnical theory and role theory in order to verify the effects of stress (that is, technostress) created from information and computer technology (ICT) concerning role stress and performance. We suggest diverse perspectives concerning the elements leading to technostress along with the stress-creating process of ICT among organizational members. The following four major hypotheses are proposed: (1) Technostress is positively related to role stress (e.g., conflict and overload of roles), adverse psychological outcomes, and adverse IS use related outcomes, (2) Role conflict is positively related to adverse psychological outcomes and adverse IS use related outcomes, (3) Role overload is positively related to adverse psychological outcomes and adverse IS use related outcomes, and (4) Innovation support will play as a moderator between technostress, roles tress, adverse psychological outcomes and adverse IS use related outcomes. A partial least square (PLS) with data gathered data from ICT users of organizations was used to verify the proposed hypotheses. The results supported our claims excluding the hypothesis associated to the relationship between technostress and role stress. We suggest a theoretical implication based on the verification of technostress related to the current concept of stress experienced by individuals within organizations. We also propose that a practical implication concerning the opposite effect of technostress, can be utilized as a method of reducing role stress, and suggests a diagnostic tool for assessing the degree of technostress within organizations.
