  • An impetus for reviving research in mathematical problem solving is the recent advance in methodological thinking, namely, the design experiment ([Gorard, S. (2004). Combining methods in educational research. Maidenhead, England: Open University Press.]; [Schoenfeld, A. H. (2009). Bridging the cultures of educational research and design. Educational Designer. 1(2). http://www.educationaldesigner.orgied/volume1/issue21]). This methodological approach supports a "re-design" of contextual elements to fulfil the overarching objective of making mathematical problem solving available to all students of mathematics. In problem solving, components critical to successful design in one setting that may be adapted to suit another setting include curriculum design, assessment strategy, teacher capacity, and instructional resources. In this paper, we describe the implementation, over three years, of a problem solving module into the main mathematics curriculum of an Integrated Programme school in Singapore which had sufficient autonomy to tailor-fit curriculum to their students.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the teacher training programs focusing on reflect qualities of teachers in gifted education. A total of 20 teacher training programs were collected from the office of education, the teacher training center of university and the remote training center. These teacher training programs were analyzed using a semantic network analysis. The analysis showed that 'curriculum', 'teaching and learning' and 'development of curriculum' were emphasized in teacher training programs. Therefore, teacher training programs are operated with an emphasis on teacher's professional qualities. The analysis also revealed that many of the teacher training programs were dealt with professional and teaching faculty's qualities more than affective qualities. Therefore, it is necessary to reorganize the teacher training programs to be diversified and balanced. Furthermore, in order to improve teacher's quality equally, we suggest a systematic training program should be pot in place.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine implications of pre-service science teacher training by analyzing science field integration and connection between learning content presented in 'Integrated Science' for high school students based on the 2015 revised science curriculum, and in pre-service science learning materials (textbooks) of the college of education. For this study, the 2015 revised 'Integrated Science' curriculum and 11 types of pre-service science teachers' learning materials related to physics, chemistry, biological science, and earth science were selected. The results were as follows. Most of the learning content presented in the 2015 revised 'Integrated Science' curriculum had integrated two or more science fields. Also, almost all learning content presented in the 2015 revised 'Integrated Science' curriculum were included in pre-service science teachers' education content, with educational content for chemistry introduced at the highest rate. The textbooks for pre-service science teachers had the most learning contents of 'Energy and Environment' domain of 'Integrated Science' for high school students. Accordingly, these results suggest that 'integrated science materials' should be developed for proper the curriculum implementation. Also, training courses for science teachers responsible for 'Integrated Science' are required. Furthermore, a revised curriculum for the college of education and a method to link with certification examinations for secondary school teachers are needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze elementary school teachers' understanding, certainty, and familiarity with 13 key concepts of wave physics that are presented in textbook and teacher's guidebook. 123 elementary school teachers answered concept tests and questionnaires. In the results to these tests and questionnaires, teachers demonstrated a high level of understanding and high certainty in understanding with regard to the concepts of sound generation, effect of medium on wave, timbre, wavelength, and trough and crest of wave. For the topics of sound velocity, wave reflection and wave transmission, teachers demonstrated a high level of understanding but low certainty in understanding. With regard to sound propagation, teachers demonstrated a low level of understanding and an improperly high certainty in that low understanding. Teachers lacked knowledge, i.e., displayed a low level of understanding and low certainty in sound strength, sound frequency, constructive interference and destructive interference. In constructive and destructive interference, the teachers also displayed a low level of familiarity. We analyzed the differences in teacher's understanding, certainty, and familiarity according to teacher demographics defined by the teacher's gender, teaching experience with concepts of sound, career, curriculum track while in high school, and major in university. There were no significant differences in understanding, certainty, or familiarity as defined by gender, teaching experience, and career. However, these displays of knowledge were affected by the teacher's curriculum track in high school and their major. These results suggest that the teacher's understanding of, familiarity with, and certainty in wave physics concepts are more influenced by their learning experience than by their teaching experience. Therefore, we suggest additional learning opportunities for teachers (such as teacher training programs) in order to improve teacher knowledge and correct teacher misconceptions in wave physics.

  • The purpose of this study is to get implications on teacher education curriculum according by analyzing pre-service secondary teachers' difficulties during student-teacher practice. Fifty-six pre-service secondary teachers were requested to write anecdotes about their student-teacher practice. Pre-service secondary teachers revealed that they had experienced the most difficulties relating to instruction teaching. They answered that they had especially comprehended inducing interest in diffcult learners, attention, appropriate composition of questions, and learners' understanding levels. Pre-service secondary teachers showed that they had tried to control students in experiment instruction. Also, they demonstrated that time for guidance counseling had been insufficient. They were dissatisfied with the content and level of counseling. Therefore, we need to improve teachers' college curriculum by performing student-teacher practice and feedback. We especially need to systematize teachers' college curriculum on the basis of developing standards of science teachers' expertise.
