  • This research was conducted for major cultivated chestnut (Castanea spp.) in Korea to compare chestnut quality characteristics according to storage temperatures ($4^{\circ}C$ vs. $-1^{\circ}C$) and cultivars. Color, hardness, soluble solids content (SSC), rate of decay and sensory evaluation were investigated during 16 weeks storage. Cultivars 'Tsukuba' and 'Ishizuchi' showed the least pericarp color change while cultivars 'Riheiguri' and 'Daebo' showed the most pericarp color change during storage. Chestnut fruits stored at $-1^{\circ}C$ showed less pericarp color change than those stored at $4^{\circ}C$. Cultivars 'Arima' and 'Tanzawa' exhibited the decrease tendency of hardness with lowest hardness during storage at $-1^{\circ}C$. Chestnut fruits stored at $4^{\circ}C$ showed high hardness than those stored at $-1^{\circ}C$. Cultivars 'Riheiguri' showed the highest increase of SSC, while cultivar 'Arima' showed the lowest increase of SSC after 16 weeks of storage. The SSC increased in nuts from all cultivars at both temperatures, but nuts stored at $-1^{\circ}C$ showed higher increases in SSC than nuts stored at $4^{\circ}C$. Cultivars 'Ishizuchi' and 'Riheiguri' showed high rates of decayed nuts in contrast to cultivars 'Daebo', 'Okkwang' and 'Tanzawa' that showed low rates of decayed nuts during storage. The chestnut fruit stored at $-1^{\circ}C$ showed less decay than fruit stored at $4^{\circ}C$. Texture and sweetness were tested for sensory evaluation. Among the tested cultivars, 'Riheiguri', 'Daebo' and 'Tsukuba' showed hard texture and very sweetness, while 'Tanzawa' showed relatively soft texture. 'Arima' and 'Okkwang' showed weak sweetness during storage. Nuts stored at $4^{\circ}C$ exhibited harder texture than nuts stored at $-1^{\circ}C$ while $-1^{\circ}C$ exhibited more sweetness than nuts stored at $4^{\circ}C$. Chestnuts for hard texture and short-term storage (less than one month), $4^{\circ}C$ will be a proper storage temperature, while in order to store long-term (more than 4 month), $-1^{\circ}C$ will be a proper storage temperature. Result from this study provide base-line data of postharvest management for Korean cultivated chestnut as well as contributing increased product value and income for chestnut producers.

  • Compositional changes of the Korean chestnut (Castanea crenata) including Daebo, Tsukuba, Tanzawa and Okkwang were investigated in order to characterize them from different periods (immature, mature and storage period). Proximate compositions of mature cultivars were higher than that of the immature cultivars. Between minerals, K (263.0-420.6 mg/100 g) and P (45.8-69.6 mg/100 g) of Tanzawa were highest, and they gradually increased during storage. Tsukuba, in mature period, showed the highest contents of total essential amino acids and glutamic acids as savory amino acids. Major fatty acids were palmitic acid and linolenic acid in four cultivars. In addition, linoleic acids, as ${\omega}$-6 fatty acids, were increased during the storage period. Tanzawa, in the mature period, presented the highest levels of sucrose, however, tsukuba, in the storage period, showed relatively higher free sugar content than others. ${\beta}$-Carotene, as a provitamin A, of Tsukuba in the mature period was highly detected among them, and vitamin C of Tsukuba and Tanzawa was more plentiful than others.

  • This study investigated the optimum condition of abrasion peeling machine and pellicle peeling ability of chestnut (Castanea spp.) varieties for the efficient production of peeled chestnuts. The optimum conditions were 50 minutes peeling time and 27 rpm of drum rotation speed and chestnut pellicle peeling ratio was 89.3%. Among 8 Korean chestnut varieties which were peeled under the optimum condition (27 rpm/50 min), 'Tsukuba (89.3%)', 'Tanzawa (72.2%)' and 'Ishizuchi (70.9%)' showed the highest ratio of pellicle peeling ratio. 'Tsukuba' had the most excellent peeled (grade I) chestnuts (77.3%), followed by 'Ishizuchi (46.7%)', and 'Tanzawa (45.0%)'. Regarding the chestnuts quality for commercialization, 'Tsukuba' had the most excellent peeled chestnuts (90.5%), followed by 'Tanzawa (74.8%)', and 'Ishizuchi (74.3%)'. 'Mipung (37.2%)' had the most broken and injured chestnuts and 'Tsukuba (5.9%)' had the least broken and injured chestnuts. Therefore this study concluded that 'Tsukuba' was the superior variety for producing high value-added processed chestnuts.

  • Radial variations in the lengths of wood fibers and vessel elements in the stem of chestnut (Castanea crenata) grown in Korea were investigated to get some fundamental information for efficient use of wood. Seven chestnut cultivars (Tanzawa, Ibuki, Arima, Ginyose, Tsukuba, Riheiguri, and Mansung) were examined in this study. The lengths of wood fibers and vessel elements were measured and analyzed by an optical microscope and an imaging analysis system. In all chestnut cultivars, the wood fiber length of latewood was longer than that of earlywood, and increased with the increase of growth ring number. Similarly, vessel element length of latewood was longer than that of earlywood, and showed increasing tendency with the increase of growth ring number. Consequently, it was considered that the lengths of wood fibers and vessel elements could be used for separating juvenile wood from adult wood in the chestnut stem.

  • Aberrations on the short arm of chromosome 8 (8p) are frequently observed in several human cancers. In this study, 20 squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) specimens from the tongue were examined in order to evaluate the role of 8p in SCC of the tongue. Microsatellite analysis using 14 markers demonstrated two commonly deleted regions (CDRs) on 8p. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) revealed frequent down-regulation of the FEZ1 gene, mapped to 8p22, and frequent over-expression of the cathepsin B gene, mapped to 8p-21-22. These results suggested that genetic aberrations are involved in the development of SCC of the tongue. However, no significant relationship was observed to be established between the genetic alterations and clinicopathological features. Thus, further investigation is necessary in order to clarify the clinical role of 8p in carcinoma of the tongue.

  • The numerical simulation of wind and ozone ($O_3$) transport in mountainous regions was performed with a computational fluid dynamics technique. A dry deposition model for $O_3$ was designed to estimate $O_3$ deposition in complex terrain, and the qualitative validity of the predicted $O_3$ concentration field was confirmed by comparison with observed data collected with passive samplers. The simulation revealed that wind velocity increases around ridge lines and peaks of mountains. The areas with strong wind corresponded well with the sites of tree decline at high altitudes, suggesting that it is an important factor in the localization of tree/forest decline. On the other hand, there is no direct relationship between forest decline and $O_3$ concentration. The $O_3$ concentration, however, tends to increase as wind velocity becomes higher, thus the $O_3$ concentration itself may be a potential secondary factor in the localized decline phenomena. While the diffusion flux of $O_3$ is not related to localized tree decline, the pattern of advection flux is related to those of high wind velocity and localized tree decline. These results suggest that strong wind with large advection flux of $O_3$ may play a key role in the promotion of tree/forest decline at high mountain ridges and peaks.

  • Anatomical and physical characteristics of seven cultivars of chestnut wood (Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc.), Tanzawa, Ibuki, Mansung, Arima, Ginyose, Tsukuba, and Riheiguri, were investigated to obtain some valuable information for their possibilities to be used for high quality furnitures and woodcrafts. Solitary pore and figured-porous or ring-porous wood types were observed in wide growth rings, and ring-porous in narrow growth rings. Procumbent type was prevalent in ray cells although upright and square types were scarcely existed. Uniseriate, biseriate, and multiseriate rays were observed in tangential section. Uniseriate ray was abundant near the pith, and biseriate and multiseriate rays were frequently existed near the bark. The occurrence rate of biseriate and multiseriate rays was significantly high in Tanzawa, Ibuki, Mansung and Tsukuba, but was somewhat low in Arima, Ginyose and Riheiguri. The inner region showed larger vessel diameter, more vessel number, fewer ray number and higher ray height than the outer region. Growth-ring width in inner region was larger than that in outer region. Growth-rings in inner region of Mansung and Arima were wide while that of Ibuki was narrow. Outer region in all cultivars showed higher latewood percentage than inner region. Especially, Mansung and Tsukuba showed significantly high latewood percentage in their outer region. Green moisture content and density of heartwood were higher than those of sapwood. Tsukuba and Riheiguri had higher green moisture content, and Ibuki and Riheiguri had higher green density than the other chestnut cultivars.

  • Three piston cores. obtained from the northwestern Ulleung Basin of the East Sea, are analyzed to study the tephrostratigraphy of the late Quaternary core sediments and to reveal the comparative characteristics of the tephra layers. The cores consist mainly of the muddy sediments that are partly interbedded with lapilli tephra and ash layers. The muds are further divided into hemipelagic and turbiditic mud facies. The hemipelagic facies is dominated by bioturbated mud and crudely laminated mud, whereas the turbiditic facies includes mainly thinly laminated mud and homogeneous mud, and often alternates with non-turbiditic muds. According to microscopic observation and EDX analysis, three tephra layers of the Ulleung-Oki (U-Oki; ca. 9.3 ka), Aira-Tanzawa (AT: ca. 22~24.7 ka) and Ulleung-Yamato (U-Ym; ca. 25~33 ka) are identified in the study cores. Among these, the U-Oki and U-Ym layers, originating from the Ulleung Island, consist mainly of massive-type glass shards with alkali feldspar. Both of the tephra layers contain a lower content of SiO$_2$ (57~66.5 wt.%) and a higher content of Na$_2$O+K$_2$O (11~16 wt.%) than the AT layer (SiO$_2$=75~78.5 wt.%, Na$_2$O+K$_2$O=6.5~9 wt.%) that consists of typical plane-type and/or bubble-wall glass grains. Compared with that of the U-Ym layer, a sedimentary facies of the U-Oki layer is very thick and contains three stratigraphic units, probably due to relatively large and different supplies of pyroclastic sediments. Thus, the eruption of Ulleung Volcano (ca. 7,300 B.C.) is thought to have had a more powerful effect on depositional environment than the U-Ym eruption.

  • Resistance to chestnut gall wasp (Dryocosmus kuriphilus) of Korean prevailing chestnut cultivars, new cultivars released by Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI), and local cultivars by growers was investigated to select optimal cultivars suitable for main chestnut producing areas. During three years investigated from 2004 to 2006, we could find no damage by chestnut gall wasp in any cultivars of test sites located in Gongju and Chungju of the central area. However, most cultivars of Gwangyang, Sancheong and Hapcheon sites located in the southern area showed a lot of damage by chestnut gall wasp. Hapcheon was most severe in comparison with regional damage by chestnut gall wasp. From comparison among cultivars, Kwangeun, Sandae, Eunsan and Idae released by KFRI showed no damage suggesting the highest resistant cultivars. On the contrary, over 20% in total damage by chestnut gall wasp was investigated in Tanzawa, Riheiguri, Kurakata-amaguri, Pyeonggi, Gwangdeok, Seil, Sinipyeong and Yumabyuni suggesting susceptible cultivars. In damage by chestnut gall wasp according to investigated position within tree, weak shoot was more severe than bearing shoot. Damage by chestnut gall wasp of major cultivars in Gwangyang, Sancheong and Hapcheon sites was remarkably decreased in 2006, and it seems to be caused by biological control by natural enemies such as Torymus sinensis.
