  • The purpose of this study was to determine the strategies that middle school students used in solving problems concerning density and solubility. These were compared in the aspects of problem contexts for 42 students of varying logical reasoning ability, spatial ability, and learning approach. A coding scheme used consists of five categories: reading & organization, production, errors, evaluation, and strategy. Students' protocols were analyzed after intercoder agreement had been established to be .95. The results were as follows: 1. Students had more difficulties in reading and organizing the problems in everyday contexts than in scientific contexts. Students at the concrete-operational stage and / or surface approach were more likely to have difficulties in reading and organizing the problems than those at the formal-operational stage and / or deep approach. 2. Students tended to split up the solubility problems into sub-problems and to solve the density problem in everyday contexts in random manner. These were significantly correlated with the test scores concerning logical reasoning ability, spatial ability, and learning approach at the .1 level of significance. 3. Major errors in solving the density problems were to disregard the given information or generated and to use inappropriate information. Many errors in solving the solubility problems were found to be executive errors. The strategy to use the information given appropriately was positively related to students' logical reasoning ability, spatial ability, and learning approach. 4. More evaluation strategies were found in everyday contexts. Their strategies to grasp the meaning of answers and to check the math were significantly related to students' logical reasoning ability. 5. Students used the random trial-and-error strategy more than the systematic strategy and the systematic trial-and-error strategy, especially in everyday contexts. The strategies used by the students were significantly related to students' logical reasoning ability, spatial ability, and learning approach.

  • This paper proposes the Systematic Design Methodology of the Korean High Speed Train. High Speed Train do not operate in isolation and are part of a rail system which is influenced through input and output effects from the environment and from the neighbouring system. To fulfil its overall desired function, such input and output relationships between the systems must be considered in the system boundary conditions. Therefore, the overall interrelationship of all these effects has to be carefully considered during the design process. Here proposed methodology may provide a guide line and criteria for the systematic problem solving method of that highly complex High Speed Train System.

  • It is not easy to find out well organized teaching and learning methodology as the adverse effects of the internet have made a lot of problems because we realize the importance of the information/cyber ethic education. In this paper, I suggest the teaching and learning process of the information/cyber ethic education as applying the creative problem solving process of the six-step model proposed by A. Osborn and S. Parnes. We divided fifth grade 54 elementary school students into two groups, a experimental group and a control group, and conducted the the teaching and learning experimental methods. The experimental group, conducted educational teaching and learning methods for information ethics education using creative problem solving process, got a better result compared to the other group. It must be one of the systematic approach to lead changes of learners'; recognition, focusing on the ethics problem-solving process.

  • It is reported that programming education contributes to improving problem solving skills by developing higher thinking skills. As many researches mention the need of programming education, they point to the fundamental difference by gender. This study aims to find out the cause of low interest and achievement levels in programming education in female students. To achieve our goals, we chose 133 specialized high school students in which programming class is being carried out as subjects of our study. The results of this study showed that female students had the tendency to prefer individual projects to a more systematic method of problem solving. Moreover, according to correlation analysis, higher programming skills in female students showed various problem solving processes. This study shows significance in proposing different study methods according to gender to obtain effective programming study.

  • The purpose of this study is to look at the use of heuristics when a sixth grader solves a problem. Two research questions have been formulated: The similarities and differences in the use of heuristics when a student solves two problems that are science-knowledge-based and not science-knowledge-based, and the different types of prompts. A male sixth grade student participated in this study. All of the information for the study was collected in three interviews. The interviews began with observing the student's solving problems. The student was asked how and why he solved problem that way. There were some interactions between the researcher and the student during the interview procedures. As results of this study, eight general heuristics were used in both solutions: Check examples for support of an idea: check examples for exceptions to an idea: restate the problem: compare to known examples or patterns: make a hypothesis; check the relevance of other information present; use analogy: and recognize patterns/similarity. There seemed to be more similarities than differences in the type of general heuristic that were used in the two problem solutions. The student was systematic and consistent in his use of the general use of heuristics. Five types of interviewer prompts were detected in the two problem solutions, directional cues, modeling, clarity, problem posing, metacognition and validation.

  • Computer programming in computer education draws much attention recently. Encouraged by the increased tendency of acquiring logical ability and creativity through learning, various attempts have been made to develop them through learning computer programming in the area of computer education as well. The fact that a computer program is the representation of a computer algorithm expressed in a computer language makes us realize that the devise of a logical method for a solution - i.e., the design of an algorithm - is the key to the solution of a problem. Recognizing the importance of computer algorithm would lead us to such a point that systematic investigations for directional establishment for algorithm education are necessary. We observe that researches on teaching computer algorithm have concentrated mostly on specific problems such as sorting and searching, which can be characterized as problem-dependent and individual. In this paper, the idea of conceptual algorithm is stated from the standpoint of conceptual types of problem-solving methods which are considered as problem-independent and collective. A novice approach to algorithm education based on the characteristics of types of conceptual algorithms is proposed for the purpose of developing systematic, problem-independent, algorithmic problem-solving capabilities of learners, which is widely different from the current methods of individual and problem-dependent algorithm education.
