  • The frequency of weak children, derived from constitutional and functional factors, has increased recently, but their symptoms have never been observed and analysed. A survey was conducted to evaluate and understand the characteristics of weak children. 311 children who had visited in the weak child clinic of Kyunghee Oriental Medical Hospital from January, 1999 to August, 1999, were the respondents of the Weak Child Questionnaire. They were divided into 4 groups by age and birth weight, and statistical significances were tested by one way analysis of variances and bivariate correlation analysis among groups. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Distribution of sex : male 191 cases, female 120 cases 2. The distribution of age showed the highest in $2{\sim}6$ years(45.3%), followed by $7{\sim}12$ years(31.8%), $0{\sim}1$ years(18.0%), over 13 years(4.8%) in order. There was a statistical difference of all symptoms' mean, except respiratory symptoms, among groups(p<0.01). 3. The distribution of birth weight showed the highest in $2.5{\sim}3.3kg(43.4%)$, followed by $3.3{\sim}4.1kg(39.5%)$, under 2.5kg(5.1%), over 4.lkg(2.1%) in order. There was a statistical difference of digestive symptoms' and total score mean among groups(p<0.01, p<0.05 respectively). 4. The correlation coefficient between general symptoms' mean and other symptoms´ is the highest(p<0.01). From the above results, it was suggested that general symptoms are representative of weak children's characteristics.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to re-evaluate the importance of questions of obesity syndrome differentiation (OSD) questionnaire based on real-world survey and to explore the possibility of simplifying OSD types. Methods: The OSD frequency was identified, and variance threshold feature selection was performed to filter the questions. Filtered questions were clustered by K-means clustering and hierarchical clustering. After principal component analysis (PCA), the distribution patterns of the subjects were identified and the differences in the syndrome distribution were compared. Results: The frequency of OSD in spleen deficiency, phlegm (PH), and blood stasis (BS) was lower than in food retention (FR), liver qi stagnation (LS), and yang deficiency. We excluded 13 questions with low variance, 7 of which were related to BS. Filtered questions were clustered into 3 groups by K-means clustering; Cluster 1 (17 questions) mainly related to PH, BS syndromes; Cluster 2 (11 questions) related to swelling, and indigestion; Cluster 3 (11 questions) related to overeating or emotional symptoms. After PCA, significant different patterns of subjects were observed in the FR, LS, and other obesity syndromes. The questions that mainly affect the FR distribution were digestive symptoms. And emotional symptoms mainly affect the distribution of LS subjects. And other obesity syndrome was partially affected by both digestive and emotional symptoms, and also affected by symptoms related to poor circulation. Conclusions: In-depth data mining analysis identified relatively low importance questions and the potential to simplify OSD types.

Methods: The subjects were patients who visited Chosun University Dental Hospital with tongue symptoms from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021. We analyzed 491 patients (139 males and 352 females) with tongue-related diagnostic code names in the Korean Standard Classification of Disease (KCD) in the Electronic Medical Record (Dentopinformation Technology Co., Seoul, Korea). Results: On analyzing the diagnoses of tongue diseases using the KCD, glossopyrosis (44.8%) and painful tongue (15.2%) showed high rates. Of the 491 patients, 139 (28.3%) were males and 352 (71.7%) were females, and the average age was 58.1 years. As for systemic diseases, there were many patients with diseases of the circulatory system (27.0%) and endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases (13.7%). Tongue symptoms were discomfort in 58 patients, pain in 329 patients, paresthesia in 10 patients, burning sensations in 222 patients, dysgeusia in 25 patients, dryness in 110 patients, fissures in 57 patients, and other symptoms in 72 patients. Areas with tongue symptoms were the anterior area in 102 patients, the lateral area in 140 patients, the posterior area in 12 patients, the dorsal area in 140 patients, the ventral area in 42 patients, and which area in 126 patients overall. Patients with burning mouth syndrome and oral candidiasis had significantly more tongue symptoms. Conclusions: Patients with tongue symptoms exhibited a variety of tongue diseases. Tongue symptoms were more common in women over 50 years of age and were frequently seen in patients with burning mouth syndrome and oral candidiasis.
