In order to research the effects of Shipjundaebotang(SDT) and Orostachys Herba(OH) on anti-tumor and immune response, the author performed this experimental study. Experimental groups are divided into five groups, which are solid extract of Orostachys Herba by water(OHW), solid extract of Orostachys Herba by ethanol(OHE), solid extract of Shipjundaebotang (SDT), solid extract of Shipjundaebotang added by solid extract of Orostachys Herba by water(SDT+OHW) and solid extract of Shipjundaebotang added by solid extract of Orostachys Herba by ethanol (SDT+OHE). In these experimental studies, extension of survival days for anti-tumor effect was observed, and de layed type hypersensitivity and rosette forming cell for cell-mediated immune response, hemagglutinin titers and hemolysin titers for humeral immune response, spleenic natural killer cell activity and carbon clearance (K-index) in vitro were measured with mice. The result were summerized as follows: I. SDT, SDT+OHW and SDT+OHE treated groups were significantly recognized to extend the survival days of tumor bearing mice as compared with the control group. 2. Delayed type hypersensitivity was significantly increased in SDT, SDT+OHW and SDT+OHE treated groups as compared with control group. 3. Hemagglutinin titer was increasred in all sample groups as compared with control group, but not significantly. 4. Hemolysin titers was significantly increased in SDT, SDT+OHW and SDT+OHE treated groups as compared with control group, and SDT+OHE treated group showed the increasing effect with significance as compared with the other sample groups. 5. For the effect of roselle forming cell quantitation, SDT, SDT+OHW and SDT+OHE treated groups showed the increasing effect with significance as compared with control group. 6. Natural killer cell activity was significantly increased in SDT+OHW as compared with comrol group, but the other groups, except OHW and SDT+OHW treated groups, revealed the increasing effect as compared with control group, but the significance was not admitted. 7. For the effect of K-index(Carbon clearance), SDT, SDT+OHW and SDT+OHE treated groups showed the increas ing effect with significance as compared with control group. 8. The study didn't show that Orostachys herba had any significance with survival days, anti-tumor effect and immune re sponse.
Purpose :To evaluate protective mechanism of melatonin against radiation damage and its relationship with apoptosis in mouse jejunum. Materials and Methods: 168 mice were divided into 28 groups according to radiation dose and matatonin treatment. To analysis crypt survival, microcolony survival assay was done according to Withers and Elkind's method. To analysis apoptosis, TUNEL assay was done according to Labet-Moleur's method. Results : Radiation protection effect of melatonin was demonstrated by crypt survival assay and its effect was stronger in high radiation dose area. Apoptosis index with 8 Gy irradiation was 18.4$\%$ in control group and 16.5$\%$ in melatonin treated group. After 18 Gy, apoptosis index was 17.2$\%$ in control group and 15.4$\%$ in melatonin treated group. Apoptosis index did not show statistically significant difference between melatonin treated group and control group. Conclusion : Melatonin shows clear protective effect in mouse jejunum against radiation damage but its protective effect seems not to be related with apoptosis protection effect.
The survival and growth of Glossaulax didyma didyma ($R{\ddot{o}}ding$) were measured in the laboratory under controlled conditions, such as water temperature, salinity and diet. The effect of temperature on G. didyma didyma was examined at four different levels (15, 20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$) with 30 psu for 30 days. The results show that the growth and survival rates of G. didyma didyma were significantly higher at $15^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ than at other temperatures. The effect of salinity on G. didyma didyma was also examined at six different levels (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 psu) in $20^{\circ}C$ for 40 days. The results showed that the growth and survival rates of G. didyma didyma were significantly higher at 30 psu and 35 psu than at other salinities. Finally, the effect of diets on G. didyma didyma was examined with three single-component diets (prawn, shellfish and fish) at $20^{\circ}C$ and 30 psu for 60 days. The results showed that the growth and survival rates of G. didyma didyma fed on shellfish were significantly higher than those fed on prawn and fish.

Purpose: The flap delay is a widely used technique to increase the flap survival. Dexamethasone is a well-known drug to have a positive impact on the flap survival. The objective of this study is to investigate the dual synergic effect of epinephrine as a chemical delay agent plus dexamethasone on the TRAM flap survival in rat model. Methods: Forty Sparague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups evenly and a right inferior epigastic vessel pedicled TRAM flap, sized $5.0{\times}3.0cm$, was elevated on each upper abdomen. In the control group(N=10), 2 ml saline was injected on transverse abdominis muscle for a week before the flap elevation. In surgical delay group(N=10) all superior pedicles and left inferior pedicle were ligated a week before the flap elevation. In epinephrine group (N=10), 1 : 50000 epinephrine mixed saline was injected to transverse abdominis muscle every day for a week before flap elevation. In epinephrine plus dexamethasone group (N=10), the same procedure as that of epinephrine group was conducted for a week and 2.5 ml/kg dexamethasone was injected transverse abdominis muscle 2 hours before the flap elevation. On the seventh day after flap elevation, the survival area of flaps were measured and the vessel numbers in upper dermis of flap were counted through histologic slides. Results: The results were as follows: the mean percentage of the flap survival area of surgical delay group ($60.5{\pm}2.44%$), epinephrine group ($75{\pm}4.43%$), and epinephrine plus dexamethasone group ($87{\pm}1.94%$) were higher than that of the control group ($35{\pm}6.06%$) significantly(p<0.05). In case of the vessel number though histologic slides, epinephrine group ($79.3{\pm}5.57$) and epinephrine plus dexamethasone group ($96.3{\pm}14.05$) were higher than that of the control group ($44.8{\pm}8.82$) significantly(p<0.05), but the surgical delay group ($54{\pm}4.23$) showed no significant difference (p>0.05) compared to that of the control group. Conclusion: The results indicated that epinephrine plus dexamethasone injection before the flap elevation could be used to increase the TRAM flap survival area in rat model.

Purpose: Multidisciplinary approaches of surgical resection and chemotherapy have been widely used for the treatment of non-metastatic osteosarcomas. We aimed to assess the effect of neoadjuvant chemotherapy for metastasis and disease-specific survival. Materials and Methods: Authors retrospectively reviewed 225 young (<30 years old) and non-metastatic osteosarcoma patients who underwent surgical resection and postoperative chemotherapy between February 1984 and July 2010. Mean age was 14.4 years old (ranged: 4-29 years old) and average follow-up period was 9.1 years (2-28 years). The patients were divided into two groups according to the application of preoperative chemotherapy. Both groups were compared with clinical characteristics, metastasis-free survival and disease-specific survival. Results: All of 225 patients, 32 patients were treated with postoperative chemotherapy and 193 patients were performed preoperative and postoperative chemotherapy. Postoperative chemotherapy group showed significantly high rate of amputation (p<0.001). Metastasis was occurred in 101 patients. Postoperative chemotherapy group indicated significant higher rate of metastasis (69% vs 41%, p=0.004) and early development of metastasis (mean: 11.5 vs 20.3 months, p=0.045) than pre-and postoperative chemotherapy group. Fifty-seven patients were died of osteosarcoma. Postoperative chemotherapy group revealed significant lower rate of 5-year disease-specific survival than pre-and postoperative chemotherapy group (51% vs 84%, p=0.001). Adult (>15 years) and large sized tumor (>8 cm) were meaningful risk factors of metastasis and disease-specific survival. Although, local recurrences were occurred in 13 patients, there was no significant difference. Conclusion: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy offers better disease-specific survival and metastasis-free survival.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of salinity on the early embryonic development stage of boreal digging frogs (Kaloula borealis). An experiment was carried out with the eggs of K. borealis mating couples laid along the coastal zone of Jeju Island in June 2013. The salinity was set to 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 ‰, respectively. The survival and growth of the larvae at various stages from the egg phase to the closing of their external gills phase were observed. In another experiment, tadpoles in internal gill stage were placed in solutions with salinity of 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 ‰, respectively, and their survival rate and growth rate were observed, and then the results of the two experiments above were compared. The results showed that in egg and external gill stage, there was no significant difference in survival rate in 3 ‰ solution, though there was low survival rate in 5 ‰ solution. Further, all the eggs were dead in 7 ‰ solution, so it appeared that solutions with salinity of 5 ‰ or higher affect the survival of K. borealis in the early embryonic development. Larvae in the internal gill stage showed no significant difference in survival rate from the control group up to a salinity of 5 ‰, but when placed in a solution of over 7 ‰ salinity, the survival rate decreased. The growth rate also slowed down with the higher salinity. It appeared that in both the external gill stage and the internal gill stage in 5 ‰ solution, the growth rate decreased significantly compared to the control group. From this study it is concluded that higher salinity values have a significant impact on the survival and growth of the K. borealis larvae and this finding can be used to conserve K. borealis species that are decreasing in number due to the side effects of development in coastal areas.

The cytocidal effect of hyperthermia on subcutaneous SCK tumor cells growing in vivo was significantly greater than that on the SCK tumor cells cultured in vitro. When the tumors were left in situ after heating, the cell survival progressively decreased, and the functional intratumor vascular volume also decreased. The radiation survival curves of tumor cells heated either 30 min before or after X-irradiation in vivo were steeper than the radiation survival curves of unheated control tumors. It is concluded that the cytocidal effect of hyperthermia on tumor cells in vivo is greater than that in vitro due possibly to the intratumor environment.
Aims: To evaluate the adverse effect and survival outcome of weekly and triweekly cisplatin with radiotherapy in treatment of cervical cancer. Methods: After an extensive literature search between 1995-2011, we analyzed 7 studies to compare weekly cisplatin and triweekly cisplatin combined radiotherapy. Results: Our analysis established that weekly cisplatin has a lower risk of hematologic toxicity than triweekly cisplatin with concurrent radiotherapy in the treatment of cervical cancer. However, there were no differences in progression free survival and overall survival between weekly cisplatin and triweekly cisplatin (p>0.05). Conclusions: Weekly cisplatin combined with concurrent radiation has lower risk in hematologic toxicity than triweekly cisplatin, but does not improve survival. Triweekly cisplatin treatment has longer intervals and is therefore more convenient. Clinicians and patients can choose either weekly cisplatin or triweekly cisplatin combined radiotherapy for cervical cancer.
Survival and thermal inactivation after heat treatment at $143^{\circ}F$ were observed among 27 strains of coliform bacteria isolated from dairy cattle. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The obvious differences in heat-sensitivity were observed among the strains tested. 2. No strain was found resistant to the heat treatment of $143^{\circ}F$ for 30 minutes. 3. A marked effect of density of coliform bacteria on the survival after the heat treatment was observed. As the density of coliform bacteria was increased, the rate of survival was increased markedly regardless of the length of heat treatment.
The increasing of atmospheric $CO_2$ are changing the pH (ocean acidification) and temperature of the sea. Although the effects of ocean acidification on calcifying organisms have well-documented, only a few studies have examined the combined effects of ocean acidification and elevated temperature. This study investigated the effects of ocean acidification and elevated temperature for 2100 on survival and growth of juvenile abalone, Haliotis discus hannai. Ocean acidification was simulated by bubbling $CO_2$ into seawater at concentrations of 1,000 and 1,500 ppm, and temperature was set at room temperature $+2^{\circ}C$. Neither $CO_2$ nor temperature had a significant effect on survival of abalone, while both significantly affected growth. There was no significant interaction between the two factors. Shell length can be used as a growth index of abalone to access the impacts of ocean acidification and elevated temperature.
