  • This study investigated the effects of pipe network materials and distance on system performance utilizing unused energy sources in large-scale horticulture facility. For this, the modeling was performed with a 100 m long and 100 m wide rectangular shaped glass house having an area of 1ha ($10,000m^2$) using EnergyPlus software. The heat sources considered were air source, geothermal heat, power plant waste heat, sea water heat, and river water. The temperature variation of the fluid with regard to pipe material and distance from the heat source and the resultant heat pump electricity consumptions were calculated. It turned out that the fluid temperature reaching the heat pump increased as the distance from the heat source increased in case of sea water and river water, which have higher temperatures than the surrounding soil, improving the heat pump efficiency. It was vice versa in case of the power plant waste heat. In addition, pipe material of PVC showed the smallest effect on the system performance variation due to the lowest thermal conductivity, compared to PB and HDPE.

  • It is well known that water leakage from decrepit sewer pipe mainly causes frequent occurrence of ground subsidence in urban area. Thus, laboratory model tests were carried out to investigate ground behaviour according to location of sewer fracture and various relative densities of surrounding soil. The portion of fractured pipe was assumed to be 20% compared to the circumference of pipe, and to be positioned at the top and bottom of the pipe. Ground conditions were made as loose sand ($D_r=30%$) and dense sand ($D_r=70%$). In addition, comparison and analysis with results of model tests were carried out by Finite Element analysis. As a result, not only water leakage from the bottom of pipe (scenario 2) caused greater ground behaviour than leakage from the top of pipe (scenario 1), but also much greater surface settlement occurred when the ground condition is loose.

  • The coastal area, particularly along the West and South coasts in Korea, is often reclaimed with dredged marine-clay to meet the demand of land capacity. A large number of ground improvement techniques are developed for such a newly formed soft clay deposit. However, the quick lime column method, which is effectively used for the purpose of ground improvement in the other countries, is seldom applied in Korea. This study, therefore, focuses on the development of appropriate soft soil improvement technique by using quick lime column. A model test as well as finite element analysis was conducted to identify the consolidation characteristics around the lime column. Although actual pore water pressure measured from model tests does not coincide with the predictions made by finite element method and Chen & Law's theoretical formula, their trends are quite similar. It is revealed from this study that the pressure caused by the expansion of lime column affects considerably the consolidation characteristics of the surrounding ground.

  • Underground flexible pipes for electric cables are subject to external loads and surrounding soil pressure. Particularly, strain of flexible pipes is of great concern in terms of safety and maintenance of electric cables. In this paper, stress and strain of flexible pipes with two types of installation gap, ie, l0cm and naught, were compared to investigate the structural integrity of pipes from actual field test. The effect of degree of compaction and burial depth were also investigated to simulate the variety of construction situation. The results of the field test show that the strain criteria were satisfied under the burial depths of 80cm, 100cm and 120cm regardless of installation gap.

  • A recent survey investigated that there were over one thousand un-controlled closed landfills(1,072 sites) in Republic of Korea. Most of these landfills were constructed before 1986. Waste management act were not promulgated at that time, so they usually do not have dranage system and leachate treatment facility. Also, considerable attention has been received to landfill leachate pollution, leachate has an adverse impact on the surrounding environment such as soil, groundwater, and water supply source. According to the result of survey for closed landfill management, it was reported that 875 sites out of 1,072sites(81.6%) have no leachate treatment facility and 630 sites out of 1,072sites(58.7%) have been used for farm lands and residence. Consequently it is hard to do postclosure care continuously in most of cases and these uncontrolled landfills have contaminated farm lands and residence. The average age of these landfills are ranged mostly between 2 to 15 years. Much time and advanced technology are needed to remediate these uncontrolled landfills, therefore the survey for present status of closed landfill sites is required and suitable treatment processes should be prepared. With this point of view, We has been investigated to find out the present status of closed landfill, problems of post management and discussed plans for remediation and reuse. Remedial actions of un-controlled landfill have been carried out the many cities since 1997 upto now. Most frequently applied technology were reuse after excavation and there were several cases to capping in the surface of landfill and to construct subsurface barriers. It is considered that landfills in use have a possibility not to be controlled because of inadequate construction and improper management. Therefore remediation of uncontrolled landfills and recovery technology should be develop continuously Especially, it has been expected that resource technology of landfill gas as a energy has some advantages in controlling odors in the site area and accelerating stabilization of landfills with the energy.

  • The entrance and the exit structures of tunnels are often constructed on unfavorably soft soils (colluvial soils) as a result of environment-friendly design highlighted in recent years. For construction of such a tunnel, it is essential to secure sufficient bearing capacity of the lining supports as well as that of the surrounding soils. In this regard, H-shape steel-ribs with high stiffness are commonly used for lining supports. However, it was the past convention to ignore the effect of the steel-ribs in numerical evaluation of the structural safety. This study is intended to show how the shotcrete stresses are relieved by the steelribs, on the basis of numerical data obtained from 3-dimensional finite element analysis. The effect of steel ribs to shotcrete stresses is examined at different levels of application rates, i.e., 0%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the total stiffness. The data obtained from numerical analysis was compared with in-situ measurement. The effect of st eel ribs to shotcrete stresses was verified and appropriate total stiffness was proposed in the range of 50%~75%.

  • To analysis of the embanked slope stability using a jointed reinforcement, the internal stability and the external stability have to be satisfied, respectively. But, because the lengths of ready-made steel-grid were limited, the reinforcements must be connecting themselves to the reinforcing. In this study, the mechanical test was carried out to investigate the tensile failure and the pullout failure at the joint parts of them, which was based on the analysis of reinforced slope in field. Through the tensile tests in mid-air for the jointed steel-grid, the deformation behavior was seriously observed as follows : deformation of longitudinal member, plastic deformation of longitudinal member and of crank part. Those effects were due to the confining pressure and overburden pressure of the surrounding ground. The bearing resistance at jointed part of jointed steel-grid was due to the latter only. The maximum tensile forces were higher about 20kN~27kN than ultimate pullout resistance, but, the results of those was almost the same in mid-soil. The failures of steel-grid occurred at welded point both of longitudinal members and transverse members and of jointed parts. The strength of jointed parts itself got pullout force about 20kN, which was about 65% for ultimate pullout force of the longitudinal members N=2. To the stability analysis of reinforced structure including the reinforced slope, the studying of connection effects at jointed part of reinforcement members must be considered. Through the results of them, the stability of reinforced structures should be satisfied.

  • DMZ is considered as an ecologically sensitive landscape and one of the highest biodiversity regions in the Republic of Korea. There have been, albeit the significant value, increased interests in developing this region for a variety of purposes including tourism and commemorative events. As this region has been already facing a range of problems derived from previous development, natural disaster and invasive species, the necessity for active management of ecological health within this region has been increased, which weighs the importance of executing ecological restoration. The objective of this study was to develop evaluation indices as an effective management means of properly evaluating ecological restoration and sustainably maintaining the restored conditions on a long-term scale. Through literature review existing evaluation indices related to restoration were collected, and then the most suitable indices were selected based upon two interviews and one questionnaire survey targeting experts in the relevant field to ecological restoration. They were categorized by two major division and their subclasses (Ecological base - vegetation structure & composition, habitat characteristics, soil environment; landscape ecology - connectivity, landscape patch, boundary & surrounding) and 40 indices. These indices were considered helpful to comprehensively evaluate ecological restoration on degraded environments within ecologically sensitive areas, and sustainably manage target areas by employing a long-term monitoring approach. As this result played a meaningful role in providing the fundamentals of evaluating ecological restoration, it should develop a suitable evaluation system through further research.

  • Sand compaction pile (SCP) is one of the ground improvement techniques which are being used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of loose sands or soft clay grounds. In this study, laboratory model tests and 3-D finite element analyses were performed to investigate the interaction between sand compaction piles and surrounding soft soils. Based on the results obtained, as the area replacement ratio increases, the stress concentration ratio increases at the pile point, the settlement decreases, and the relative displacement between column and soil also decreases. It is also found that numerical study is illustrated by good comparison with model test results, and the numerical analysis revealed slip effects which could not be specifically identified in the model tests.

  • The excavation of twin tunnels is a process that destabilizes the ground. The stability of the tunnel lining, the control of ground displacements around the tunnel resulting from each excavation and the interaction between them must be controlled. This paper provides a new approach for replacing the costly 3D analyses with the equivalent 2D analyses that closely reflects the in-situ measurements when excavating twin tunnels. The modeling was performed in two dimensions using the FLAC2D finite difference code. The three-dimensional effect of excavation is taken into account through the deconfinement rate ${\lambda}$ of the soil surrounding the excavation by applying the convergence-confinement method. A comparison between settlements derived by the proposed 2D analysis and the settlements measured in a real project in Algeria shows an acceptable agreement. Also, this paper reports the investigation into the changes in deformations on tunnel linings and surface settlements which may be expected if the twin tunnels of T4 El-Harouche Skikda were constructed with a tunneling machine. Special attention was paid to the influence of the excavation phase shift distance between the two mechanized tunnel faces. It is revealed that the ground movements and the lining deformations during tunnel excavation depend on the distance between the tunnels' axis and the excavation phase shift.
