The characteristics of flow around a rotating propeller were investigated using PIV technique. For each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the flow around a propeller. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces and the slipstream contraction in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate had large values at the locations of the tip and trailing vortices. The boundary layer developed along the ship hull bottom surface of the ship stern provides a strong turbulent shear layer, affecting the vortex structure in the propeller near-wake. As the flow develops in the downstream direction, the trailing vortices formed behind the propeller hub move upward slightly due to the presence of the hull wake and free surface. The turbulence intensity has large values around the tip and trailing vortices. As the wake moves downstream, the strength of the vorticity diminishes and the turbulence intensity increases due to turbulent diffusion and active mixing between the tip vortices and adjacent wake flow.
The influence of wake flow on a flat-plate blade having different shapes near the hailing edge has been investigated in this paper. Two different shapes near the trailing edge namely the pressure surface cutting (TP) and the suction surface cutting (TS) have been used. The calculation has been performed for two different angles of attack (a =10 and 15 degree) in both the cases. RANS equations have been solved using SST-model as a turbulence closure. Cp and CL values obtained for TS are higher compared to those obtained for TP. Also, the vorticity distribution obtained in case of TS is stronger as compared to that obtained in the case of TP The Karmann Vortex is observed in both the cases but it is more clear in TS case. It is found that in the case of TS, flow separation does not occur upto the trailing edge on both the suction and the pressure sides of the blade while in the case of TP, the flow separateson the pressure surface near the trailing edge of the flat-plate blade.
The impact of midlatitude synoptic system (upper-level trough) on typhoon intensity change was investigated by analyzing the spatial and temporal characteristics of vertical wind shear (VWS), relative eddy momentum flux convergence (REFC), and potential vorticity (PV). These variables were computed over the radial mean $300{\sim}1,000km$ from the typhoon center by using GDAPS (Global Data Assimilation and Prediction System) data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The selected cases in this study are typhoons Rusa (0215) and Maemi (0314), causing much damage in life and property in Korea. Results show that the threshold value of VWS indicating typhoon intensity change (typhoon to severe tropical storm) is approximately 15 m/s and of REFC ranges 6 to 6.5 $ms^{-1}day^{-1}$ in both cases, respectively. During the period with the intensity of typhoon class, PVs with 3 to 3.5 PVU are present in 360K surface-PV field in the cases. In addition, there is a time-lag of 24 hours between central pressure of typhoon and minimum value of VWS, meaning that the midlatitude upper-level trough interacts with the edge of typhoon with a horizontal distance less than 2,000 km between trough and typhoon. That is, strong midlatitude upper-level divergence above the edge of the typhoon provides a good condition for strengthening the vertical circulation associated with the typhoons. In particular, when the distance between typhoon and midlatitude upper-level trough is less than 1,000 km, the typhoons tend to weaken to STS (Severe Tropical Storm). It might be mentioned that midlatitude synoptic system affects the intensity change of typhoons Rusa (0215) and Maemi (0314) while they moves northward. Thus, these variables are useful for diagnosing the intensity change of typhoon approaching to the Korean peninsula.

Selective catalytic reduction(SCR) is known as one of promising methods for reducing $NO_x$ emissions in diesel exhaust gases. $NO_x$ emissions react with ammonia in the catalyst surface of SCR system at working temperature of catalyst. In this study, to raise the reacting temperature when the exhaust gas temperature is too low, a heater is located at the bottom of SCR reactor. At an ambient temperature, ammonia is radially injected perpendicular to the exhaust gas flow at inlet pipe and uniformly mixed in the mixing area after being impinged against the wall. To predict the turbulent model inside the mixing area of SCR system, the standard ${\kappa}\;-\;{\varepsilon}$ model is applied. This work investigates numerically the effects of induced heat on the gaseous flow. The results show that the Taylor-$G{\ddot{o}}rtler$ type vortex is generated after the gaseous flow impinges the wall in which these vortices influence the temperature distribution. The addition of heat disturbs the flow structure in bottom area and then stretching flow occurs. Vorticity strand is also formed when heat is continuously increased. Constriction process takes place, however, when a further heat input over a critical temperature is increased and finally forms shed vortex which is disconnected from the vorticity strand. The strong vortex restricts the heat transport in the gaseous flow.

Existing conventional model for analysis of shallow water flow just assumed the internal boundary condition as free-slip, which resulted in the wrong prediction about the velocity, vorticity, water level, shear stress distribution, and time variation of drag and lift force around a structure. In this study, a finite element model that can predict flow characteristics around the structure accurately was developed and internal boundary conditions were generalized as partial slip condition using slip length concept. Laminar flow characteristics behind circular cylinder were analyzed by varying the internal boundary conditions. The simulation results of (1) time variations of longitudinal and transverse velocities, and vorticity; (2) wake length; (3) vortex shedding phenomena by slip length; (4) and mass conservation showed that the vortex shedding had never observed and laminar flow like creeping motion was occurred under free-slip condition. Assignment of partial slip condition changed the velocity distribution on the cylinder surface and influenced the magnitude of the shear stress and the occurrence of vorticity so that the period of vortex shedding was reduced compared with the case of no slip condition. The maximum mass conservation error occurred in the case of no slip condition, which had the value of 0.73%, and there was 0.21 % reduction in the maximum mass conservation error by changing the internal boundary condition from no slip to partial slip condition.

A numerical solution method of the boundary integral equation for axisymmetric potential flows is presented. Those are represented by ring source and ring vorticity distribution. Strengths of ring source and ring vorticity are approximated by linear functions of a parameter $\zeta$ on a segment. The geometry of the body is represented by a cubic B-spline. Limiting integral expressions as the field point tends to the surface having ring source and ring vorticity distribution are derived upto the order of ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$. In numerical calculations, the principal value integrals over the adjacent segments cancel each other exactly. Thus the singular part proportional to $\(\frac{1}{\zeta}\)$ can be subtracted off in the calculation of the induced velocity by singularities. And the terms proportional to $ln{\zeta}$ and ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$ can be integrated analytically. Thus those are subtracted off in the numerical calculations and the numerical value obtained from the analytic integrations for $ln{\zeta}$ and ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$ are added to the induced velocity. The four point Gaussian Quadrature formula was used to evaluate the higher order terms than ${\zeta}ln{\zeta}$ in the integration over the adjacent segments to the field points and the integral over the segments off the field points. The root mean square errors, $E_2$, are examined as a function of the number of nodes to determine convergence rates. The convergence rate of this method approaches 2.
Time series of gridded surface wind and wind-stress vectors over the world ocean have been constructed by satellite scatterometer data. The products are derived from the ERS-l,2 covering 9 years during 1992-2000 and the Sea Winds on board QuikSCAT (Qscat) which has been operating up to the present since June 1999, so they allows us to analyze variabilities with various time scales. In this study, we focus on interannual variability of the wind stress in the mid- and high-latitude region of North Pacific. These are compared with those by numerical weather prediction(NWP) ones (NCEP Reanalysis). We also examine variability in the wind-stress curl field that is an important factor for ocean dynamics and focus its time and spatial characters in the northwestern Pacific around Japan. It is found that the vorticity field in the lower atmosphere tends to increase gradually with time, suggesting the enhancement of the North Pacific subtropical gyre.

The flow field in multiple fluid sphere systems was studied analytically. The expanded zero vorticity cell model based on Kuwabara's theory (1959) was applied and the effects of gas slippage at the collecting surface were considered. Also, the solid sphere system was extended to fluid sphere including the effects of the induced internal circulation inside the liquid droplet spheres or gas bubble systems. As a result, the obtained analytic solution was converged to the existing solutions for flow field around solid and bubble sphere systems with proper boundary conditions. Based on the resolved flow field, the terminal velocity around the collecting fluid spheres was obtained. Subsequently, this study evaluated the most general solution for flow field around the multiple fluid sphere systems. The obtained flow field in multiple fluid sphere could be used as a fundamental consideration of wet scrubber design and devices for removing particles by fluid-fluid interactions.

A simple two-and -half-layer model is used to study the circulation of South China Sea( SCS ). The model is coming from the reduced gravity model of Hurbult and Thompson, with the assumption of rigid surface. It shows there is no distinct branch of the Kuroshio into the SCS. Both the upper and lower pycnocline height anomaly show that the main feature of the circulation of SCS is a cyclone, which is generated by the transportion of the vorticity from the Kuroshio. Aftr generated, the cyclone moves westward due to the beta effect, then dissipates near the west boundary due to the viscosity. After an old one dissipates, a new one appears again. The life cycle of the cyclone is about 160 days.
Frontal regions in midlatitude storms exhibit a wide range of behavior, which can be observed by remote sensors. These include decay, strengthening, rotating, and sometimes spawning of new cyclones. Here we refine and apply recent theories of front and frontal wave development to a case of a front clearly observed and analyzed in remote sensing data. By applying innovative analysis techniques to the data we assess the respective roles of ageostrophy, background deformation, and Boundary Layer processes in determining the evolution of the surface front. Our analysis comprises of diagnosis of the terms appearing in the vorticity and divergence equations using remotely sensed observations.
